Listener comments!

  Wed. 4/6/11 12:02pm Cecile:

Kurt, do you have Fighting the World?
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:04pm Cecile:

And I love Johnny Angel from Coach actress and Alzheimer's research advocate, Shelly Fabares.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:05pm Cecile:

A child star done good!
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:06pm DJ KG:

hey cecile! i never knew until this week that she was both the singing and the tv star! mn jeff learned me that.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:09pm Cecile:

Yeah. She was also on a 70s TV show where she was a nurse in Hawaii with grouchy doc Brian Keith. It was called The Little People and people made a big deal of it because it was "little Shelly all grown up." I remember weird things.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:12pm Cecile:

  Wed. 4/6/11 12:13pm BodegaMan:

a hump day hello to you all.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:13pm DJ KG:

cecile, you're hilarious.

hey bodega.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:14pm Carmichael:

Chimin' in.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:17pm Handsome Harry:

Hats off to Minnesota Jeff for another glorious animation. Really diggin' the Desolate.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:18pm Cecile:

ITA, Harry, nice work Jeff!
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:20pm DJ KG:

yeah, i love this week's gif. it reminds me of dorothy in the poppy fields (altho shelley might look a bit more like the scarecrow).
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:20pm DJ KG:

hi, harry&carchmichael. playing long songs makes it easier to say hello!
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:24pm Cecile:

"fabray"
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:26pm Cecile:

You heard about Joey from Manowar, right Kurt? He passed away this past week.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:29pm DJ KG:

no kidding? no, i hadn't heard...
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:29pm Cecile:

Yeah. I thought you hadn't, or you would have said something. Good coincidence.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:31pm BodegaMan:

not the best coincidence for Joey.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:32pm Cecile:

No, that's true Bodega.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:36pm Handsome Harry:

Let the INTELLECTUAL TRUNCATION resume!! ARCHGOAT!! YEAYAAYYRAARAGHH!!
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:36pm SiHV:

Hey, I tuned in at the right time.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:40pm Handsome Harry:

Archgoat makes me want to rip my cubical apart, chainsaw the remains, disrobe, and cover myself in red sharpie, all while yelling things in Finnish that I don't understand.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:45pm Cecile:

Not Joey, Scott Columbus. Gods help me.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:49pm Robert:

If you think you're wrong to like a piece, then you're either analyzing too much or too little. You're looking at the reasons you like music, then coming up with "rules" based on other pieces you like, and decide this one doesn't fit those rules. Theoretically you could keep analyzing until you came up with more complicated rules to explain your tastes. But it'd be a lot simpler either not to analyze at all or just not to take your self-analysis seriously.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:50pm DJ KG:

robert, i think you just invented pandora!

cecile, did i say the wrong name re: manowar?
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:51pm Nealsinn:

Could you consider the "O)))" to be a doomoticon? (I know, I hate emoticons, too.)
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:52pm Robert:

Plus, context matters. Arbitron or maybe some other rating service used to poll me on music, playing snatches over the phone and asking whether I liked the song, disliked it, or (and this is where the context came in) was tired of it.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:54pm Cecile:

No, I said "joey from manowar." i was in error.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:54pm annie:

i'm here in spirit, but hanging out in the fma archives... scary damn place. i may never come out
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:55pm DJ KG:

oh, good. thanks again for the news tip, cecile.
  Wed. 4/6/11 12:55pm FMA:

get her, guys!!!!!!!!!!!!
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:02pm annie:

i can load em in to winamp.. and then i might just make a playlist for "inn beats" on the archive itself? way too much fun, stop me while i'm still sane.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:08pm Cecile:

now, that's too late. :D
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:09pm Robert:

One reason you might not like a piece that's very much like one you do is that the one you like came first to you and occupied the "space", so the one you heard later seems like an interloper, an imitator, a poseur, a rip-off. It starts in early childhood or babihood; we reject grownups who look similar to our loved ones. That's why if Daddy grows a beard or Mother changes hair color, we don't like it.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:10pm Robert:

Actually if Daddy grows a beard the effect isn't so strong because it's gradual, but if he gets rid of a beard, that's sudden and the baby cries.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:10pm Cecile:

I gotta say, I admire Ms. Lemper's talent, but she's not my favorite Brecht singer. I'm a sucker for either Marianne Faithfull or Lotte Lenya.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:13pm glenn:

if anybody's interested, yesterday was the anniversary of the day ripple rock was blown up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1BvlN80CxXo&feature=related. i can't believe gordon lightfoot didn't write a song about it. or stan rogers.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:14pm glenn:

cecile, the best versions of brecht / weill that i've heard are by robyn archer.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:16pm DJ KG:

robyn archer! yes. and teresa stratas.

i like the dagmar krause record, too.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:18pm Carmichael:

I can take about 8 seconds of Dagmar Krause. I don't know why; I've always felt that way. And I can tolerate some goofy, shrill singers too.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:21pm Cecile:

But you just can't beat Lotte. Kurt wrote those gorgeous melodies for her.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:22pm DJ KG:

oh, sure. lotte's the shiznit!
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:22pm Cecile:

But I will check out Robin Archer, who also has a cool name...
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:22pm Mike East:

I had a dream last night that I was playing bass for Lou Reed on a cover of "Piece of My Heart." I don't know why this song just reminded me of that....strange. After the rehearsal, I was trying to find this article in the New Yorker about Lou Reed to show him and he was getting aggravated because I couldn't find it.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:23pm Cecile:

die shiznit. LOL!
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:24pm DJ KG:

robyn archer's "benares song" is unparalleled!
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:24pm glenn:

i had a dream that my cats were sleeping on my head, then i woke up, and they were sleeping on my head. weird.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:25pm glenn:

i like the ballad of the pirates.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:27pm glenn:

do you have any at hand, kurt? robyn archer, i mean.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:32pm Ike:

In all my years of cat stewardship, I've never experienced one sleeping on my head. But it's inevitable, I'm sure.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:33pm Denise in DC:

I just tuned in. Just to make sure my speakers aren't having problems: is the current track something trance-y?
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:36pm DJ KG:

denise: currently playing side three of 'frampton comes alive'
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:36pm glenn:

then again, i also had a dream that ellen barkin and i were blissfully cohabiting, and when i woke up, nothing. well, except for cats.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:36pm DJ KG:

glenn: no archer sings brecht in the library, and i think i lost my copy ages ago, sad to say.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:37pm Denise in DC:

Thank you, Kurt -- that's exactly what this sounds like.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:38pm glenn:

peter frampton's playing in toronto. no foolin'. 30th anniversary tour of frampton comes alive, i believe.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:40pm still b/p:

I think this is an accordion with a mile-long bellows getting a steady squeeze.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:43pm Denise in DC:

Glenn, I hope he plays this cut.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:44pm DJ KG:

  Wed. 4/6/11 1:45pm still b/p:

A former coworker was fond of telling me that record company geniuses once hoped to achieve Frampton-style attention and success by packaging/promoting Nils Lofgren.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:45pm DJ KG:

have you watched the bonus features on the dvd of the jack black movie "school of rock"? frampton and jim o'rourke are brought in to teach the kid actors how to act like rock stars. pretty great.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:46pm Denise in DC:

Poor Nils.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:46pm Record Company Geniuses:

O ye of little faith. The sheeple are totally manipulable, dontcha know.
Wed. 4/6/11 1:47pm Record Company Geniuses:

Two words: Justin Bieber.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:49pm still b/p:

Great pic, KG! Mama ain't wearing that on her chest -- not 'til Daddy finishes building an addition on the house.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:50pm DJ KG:

it's one of christian marclay's impossible instruments (not his name for them). really brilliant objects.
  Wed. 4/6/11 1:56pm glenn:

apparently, the audience noise on lou reed's rock and roll animal is from frampton comes alive. just to bring it all back home. that said, i really like humble pie.
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:02pm Cecile:

damn. missed it. Oh, well, I'll catch Robin on archives.
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:03pm glenn:

i'm sending kurt the album. maybe he can forward it to you, cecile.
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:05pm amaier:

  Wed. 4/6/11 2:37pm DJ KG:

i am loathe to admit it but, yes, i suppose i did...
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:41pm roscoe:

is this Velvet Underground group a Doors cover band?
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:42pm glenn:

the velvet underground is a terrible book.

  Wed. 4/6/11 2:47pm BodegaMan:

reading "Soccer in Sun and Shadow" by Eduardo Gaelleano - history of soccer, semi-political, written beautifully. US writers haven't written this lush in decades.
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:47pm DJ KG:

oh, don't tell me that glenn! i'm only 20 pages in. well, yeah, i know it's not great, but i thought it was gonna be way worse!
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:48pm DJ KG:

what's up with The Process by Brion Gysin?
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:49pm DJ KG:

wait, wait - i'm reading 'venus in furs,' not 'the velvet undderground'! supposedly THEY didn't even read 'the velvet underground."
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:50pm Das:

So far it's about a keef smoking professor travelling across the Sahara. It's interesting and kinda bizarre and fragmented at the same time
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:52pm DJ KG:

fictionish, das?
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:55pm Das:

Supposedly!
  Wed. 4/6/11 2:55pm Snortley:
