Enjoying the show. Re Poly Styrene, there was a just nice article on her in The Guardian: http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/mar/23/poly-styrene-interview?INTCMP=SRCH What did you say the name of the album was with the pro-union songs? Something new/newly reissued?

Hi Jason, I'm a listener from Germany and I would say the same thing there is no word called Straben in German and it sounded like Straßendekadenz.

Jel the Bogen:
Ah yes it was 'Straßendekadenz' but I didn't know how to make the 'ß' on my keyboard!!! (Now I will cut and paste it, thanks!)

kim:
instead of ß, you can type ss wich is actually the same
|
Fri. 3/25/11 7:03am
Jel the Bogen:
So "ß" is an additional letter in German, then... how do you pronounce it?
|
Fri. 3/25/11 7:05am
kim:
as a "hard" s, or double s
|
Fri. 3/25/11 7:08am
G:
ß is pronounced "ss", and is actually an old way of making a double s. Remember that "long s" you see in old books from the 1600s or 1700s? Same type of thing. The Germans changed their spelling a few years ago and got rid of the ß. It's supposed to be spelled ss now, but not everyone is "down with the program". :-) Strassen = streets. The track name means "streets decadence" or 'decadence in the streets".

i think, but i may be wrong, that the sound of two esses together in a german word produces a "shh" sound..
|
Fri. 3/25/11 8:18am
kim:
its the same as in "case" ss is the same as in phase
|
Fri. 3/25/11 8:19am
annie:
no... see, i was also thinking of the word "essen" soft ess.. so that blows my theory

Jel the Bogen:
if I remember my phonetic alphabet right: /ayze/= the sound in words like 'Phase', 'Raise' So is 'ss' the /ayze/ sound? (PS) by request (sorta) a couple more SWEDISH SONGS!

Nemra:
Hi Jason, I was browsing the internet to see what would come up with my old stage name and found your show 9/3/2009 playing my song "Love Ship" off of Star Shooter. I was wondering if I could send you a recent song more up to date It's Christian Rock . If so what format and to what address can I send it. Thanks for the blast from the past . Nemra
