That Samm Bennett kicked ass. Thanks for that. For the poll: born, um, considerably before 1984.

...born after "Diamond Dogs", but before "1984" (a la, Diamond Dave and "Hot For Teacher"). 1974-1984. Punk Rock saved that ignominious decade. Oh, and Brian Eno, too.

Hi all -- @Kat, I just discovered that Samm Bennett tape tonight and wow! I need to find out more about that guy. For the poll...I post-date the 60s, barely, and remember listening repeatedly to Van Halen's 1984 on my early-model Walkman...

I was born in 1984. And started listening to WFMU only last year - because of the UbuWeb Radio stream in the app ^_^

Ah, kids. You may get the joy of the station with your crystal clear modern devices, but you never had that fuzzy staticy reception with the delicate balance between MaybeICanStillGetItALittleClearer and Don'tGoNEARThatAntennaOrIllMissThePlaylist!

Dan B:
@all, wow, Cali is totally in the house tonight! Plus you guys are making me feel not that old... @Lavater, I agree -- it's such a different thing to do this kind of off-kilter programming and be able to find the folks out there on the internet who like it -- it felt much less connected to broadcast a program like this just over the radio -- but then, those connections had a special quality because it was so rare to make them.
|
Mon. 2/21/11 10:14pm
Dan B:
@oldindiantim - awesome. I was recently surprised by my mother to hear that her favorite band was ISB and they were part of why she went to Woodstock.

Dan can you help..? There was a popular sitar indie/dance upbeat track (almost drum and bass but not quite!) around about '96/97. any idea what it could be?! It's locked in my head but I have no referance to find it..
|
Mon. 2/21/11 10:19pm
Dan B:
@MK, argh, I feel like I should be able to help, but nothings coming to mind. What else can you tell us about it?
|

Major earthquake in NZ -- Christchurch hit bad. Any NZ listeners out there? You OK?
|
Mon. 2/21/11 10:23pm
Dan B:
@Christine, right, Brimful of Asha on the 45.
|
Mon. 2/21/11 10:28pm
Marmalade Kitty:
I can play it, hum it..!! It's an instrumental track. It came out about the same time as corner shop.. but Isn't brimful of Asha.. an alternative corner shop track maybe?? This is why it's important to make reference points at the time!

Keith Levene ran off and hid with the master tapes that would eventually be called "This is What You Want, This is What You Get", after falling out with the band.
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:13pm
Dan B:
@MK, that's a great story -- how did the album eventually get made?
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:13pm
Marmalade Kitty:
Levene released the tapes under the recording name - Commercial Zone in '83. Pil re-recorded the album releasing it as This is what you want..'84
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:16pm
Marmalade Kitty:
I imagine the commercial zone version would be quite rare/worth a bit..?
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:16pm
Tom Miller:
I just asked Samm Bennett to clarify how old he realiy is. Since he lives in Japan, I assume he is actually one day older than he would be here.
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:19pm
Dan B:
@Tom, let him know we're loving his tape here!
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:24pm
Tom Miller:
Dan, if you're near NYU tomorrow at 4 pm, come by the Cinema Studies building - I'm hosting Matthew Barton, Curator in the Library of Congress' recorded sound division, in a guest lecture for my "Edison to iPod" class. Matt will demonstrate his 78 rpm twin turntable dj mixing machine. 721 Broadway, 6th floor theater.
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:26pm
Dan B:
@Tom, why do you torture me so!? Now I'm going to be trying to come up with a reasonable-sounding excuse to skip out of work at 3:30...
|
Mon. 2/21/11 11:32pm
Tom Miller:
Tell them the truth: it's an important presentation from a visiting senior federal government official! Call me if you're coming.
