You see a blanket on the ground. It's your favorite color, smooth and soft. You can sit on it, or lie on it. It's a flying blanket, and you are the pilot. You are in control. You can fly anywhere you wish, just by thinking about it. You are the pilot.

Listener comments!

  Mon. 2/21/11 9:21pm david:

it's a sun ra kind of day. scronk!
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:29pm Kat:

That Samm Bennett kicked ass. Thanks for that. For the poll: born, um, considerably before 1984.
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:35pm northguineahills:

I love this ISB song!
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:37pm damien:

...born after "Diamond Dogs", but before "1984" (a la, Diamond Dave and "Hot For Teacher").

1974-1984. Punk Rock saved that ignominious decade. Oh, and Brian Eno, too.
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:40pm Dan B:

Hi all -- @Kat, I just discovered that Samm Bennett tape tonight and wow! I need to find out more about that guy. For the poll...I post-date the 60s, barely, and remember listening repeatedly to Van Halen's 1984 on my early-model Walkman...
Mon. 2/21/11 9:45pm not as old as Samm Bennett:

1984 was the year I graduated college and started listening to wfmu.
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:49pm Dan B:

@NAOASB: a very good year indeed
  Mon. 2/21/11 9:53pm Lavater:

I was born in 1984. And started listening to WFMU only last year - because of the UbuWeb Radio stream in the app ^_^
Mon. 2/21/11 9:59pm not as old as Samm Bennett:

Ah, kids. You may get the joy of the station with your crystal clear modern devices, but you never had that fuzzy staticy reception with the delicate balance between MaybeICanStillGetItALittleClearer and Don'tGoNEARThatAntennaOrIllMissThePlaylist!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:02pm R I S K Y:

Quickly becoming my favorite show Dan... Keep the jams running free!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:02pm Taylor:

B. 1972. Listening in Burbank.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:02pm Tom:

In LA, born 1985
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:03pm Shane:

Santa Monica, CA checking in! 1977.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:03pm david:

  Mon. 2/21/11 10:03pm Kent Downing:

Kansas City, Missouri. Born way after 1984 (wasn't that the year I saw Suburbia?)
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:04pm fleep:

Studio City, California, way before
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:05pm Shane:

Los Angeles area represent!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:07pm Lavater:

@naoasb: bless technology - listening from Europe here; no way I would have picked up on the signal with an oldfashioned antenna
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:07pm Kat:

Chicago in the house
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:09pm Marmalade Kitty:

Dan I love that track behind you by The Necks from Silverwater
Mon. 2/21/11 10:10pm Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

b 1960 SheepBay Brooklyn Still in GravesEnd !!!!! ...every once in a while I gotta just put up the Antenna and that little bit of static in Stereo ... just reminds me when I first heard ie... Pat Duncans show some 30+ years ago !!!!
Mon. 2/21/11 10:12pm Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

..... archives are great !!!! ... if the only reason you pledge for that ALONE is enough but .... I like just sometimes listening to the "radio" the way it used to be !! :)
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:13pm oldindiantim:

Bryn Mawr 1945 - saw ISB there in 69
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:13pm Dan B:

@all, wow, Cali is totally in the house tonight! Plus you guys are making me feel not that old... @Lavater, I agree -- it's such a different thing to do this kind of off-kilter programming and be able to find the folks out there on the internet who like it -- it felt much less connected to broadcast a program like this just over the radio -- but then, those connections had a special quality because it was so rare to make them.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:14pm Dan B:

@oldindiantim - awesome. I was recently surprised by my mother to hear that her favorite band was ISB and they were part of why she went to Woodstock.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:15pm coincidentally:

Don Delillo's White Noise was published in January 1985.

Dan can you help..? There was a popular sitar indie/dance upbeat track (almost drum and bass but not quite!) around about '96/97. any idea what it could be?! It's locked in my head but I have no referance to find it..
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:19pm Dan B:

@MK, argh, I feel like I should be able to help, but nothings coming to mind. What else can you tell us about it?
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:22pm Christine:

Cornershop?
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:23pm Dan B:

Major earthquake in NZ -- Christchurch hit bad. Any NZ listeners out there? You OK?
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:23pm Dan B:

@Christine, right, Brimful of Asha on the 45.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:28pm Marmalade Kitty:

I can play it, hum it..!! It's an instrumental track. It came out about the same time as corner shop.. but Isn't brimful of Asha.. an alternative corner shop track maybe??
This is why it's important to make reference points at the time!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:35pm NAOASB:

  Mon. 2/21/11 10:35pm Levon:

  Mon. 2/21/11 10:36pm Marmalade Kitty:

Anyway, It's a great tune to crank up! It does exist!
Twinkle, twinkle, sitar track..
How I wonder what it's called..
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:36pm listener gary:

Kansas 1939 feb 20 , if anyone is keeping score. Nice music here tonight.
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:40pm Marmalade Kitty:

NAOASB: YES!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:43pm NAOASB:

MK, don't be impressed, I "googled," as you kids call it, and found a comment board with someone asking the same question (technology ain't all bad).
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:44pm Marmalade Kitty:

Indian Vibes - Mathar :) Thank you!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:45pm R I S K Y:

  Mon. 2/21/11 10:49pm fleep:

Another case solved ... thanks to the Airborne Event Justice League!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:51pm oldindiantim:

The Fall - Another fav - Mark E Smith has a great rock scream -
what great delivery
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:51pm Marmalade Kitty:

I did try all the Google malarkey, but had no luck! although i did come across other intresting artifacts whilst looking.. "Psychedelic Electric Sitar Rock", was good!
Great show!!
  Mon. 2/21/11 10:57pm Dan B:

You guys warm my heart. I'm an old sentimental man!
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:01pm Vicki & David:

Hi from New Zealand - we're in Gisborne, East Coast, North Island. Extent of damage in Christchurch still unfolding but there's no power so they won't be able to listen at the moment.....
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:05pm Marmalade Kitty:

Keith Levene ran off and hid with the master tapes that would eventually be called "This is What You Want, This is What You Get", after falling out with the band.
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:13pm Dan B:

@MK, that's a great story -- how did the album eventually get made?
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:13pm Marmalade Kitty:

Levene released the tapes under the recording name - Commercial Zone in '83. Pil re-recorded the album releasing it as This is what you want..'84
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:16pm Marmalade Kitty:

I imagine the commercial zone version would be quite rare/worth a bit..?
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:16pm Tom Miller:

I just asked Samm Bennett to clarify how old he realiy is. Since he lives in Japan, I assume he is actually one day older than he would be here.
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:19pm Dan B:

@Tom, let him know we're loving his tape here!
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:24pm Tom Miller:

Dan, if you're near NYU tomorrow at 4 pm, come by the Cinema Studies building - I'm hosting Matthew Barton, Curator in the Library of Congress' recorded sound division, in a guest lecture for my "Edison to iPod" class. Matt will demonstrate his 78 rpm twin turntable dj mixing machine. 721 Broadway, 6th floor theater.
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:26pm Dan B:

@Tom, why do you torture me so!? Now I'm going to be trying to come up with a reasonable-sounding excuse to skip out of work at 3:30...
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:32pm Tom Miller:

Tell them the truth: it's an important presentation from a visiting senior federal government official! Call me if you're coming.
  Mon. 2/21/11 11:33pm heath:

  Mon. 2/21/11 11:45pm heath:

  Tue. 2/22/11 3:10pm brandon:
