Listener comments!

  8:32am annie:

.....that's why we drink it here..
  8:36am Drummer Some:

Glug, glug!
  8:55am marcury:

What was that tune that just finished?
  8:57am Drummer Some:

Marcury, you mean on the stream, yes? That was Leo Smith with Peter Kowald
  8:58am marcury:

Just caught the tail end. Want to hear the whole, from what album?
  9:03am listener james from westwood:

mornin' all!! just grabbing some sweet gtds before i'm sucked into the vortex of a conference call!
  9:04am Drummer Some:

Marcury:
It's called "Touch the Earth." Smith and Kowald in a trio with Gunter Somer. I'll look for the DL.
  9:05am Aaron:

morning drummer!
  9:05am Brian Woof Woof:

Afternoon Doug, so Heaven is a place where nothing ever happens.
  9:05am Drummer Some:

Hey LJfW,
What a coincidence. I'm planning on a vortex here, too!
  9:07am listener james from westwood:

Vortices for all!
  9:07am Drummer Some:

Welcome aboard Aaron and Brian Double Woof!
  9:08am Drummer Some:

Marcury,
Here is that Smith/Kowald/Somer record:

http://tinyurl.com/4ddn65w

Is this a full-service operation or what?!
  9:09am marcury:

Muchas Gracias! Can you look at my transmission also?
  9:11am Drummer Some:

Sure. And can I carry those barbells up to your attic?
  9:11am Brian Woof Woof:

marcury. Word to the wise, no mention of cars on this programme.
  9:13am marcury:

Brian, I thought it was just car insurance that was out of bounds.
  9:15am Drummer Some:

I just received my payment from the insurance company of the kid who totalled my car: They paid DOUBLE what they initially claimed they'd pay. It's still a pitiful amount, but still—double pitiful!
  9:15am Brian Woof Woof:

Well it's loony drivers really. Oh bugger we're talking about it now. I feel I can talk with some degree of understanding as mine was written off the same time as Dougs.
  9:16am Drummer Some:

Brian,
You've been sucked into the vortex.
  9:17am Brian Woof Woof:

I bought mine back from the insurance company vortex and it's running sweetly now. Bastards.
  9:19am Brian Woof Woof:

Weather check, UK style. No snow. Rain en regalia.
  9:19am still b/p:

Double Pitiful = memoir title!

I tell ya, Hell's Angels ain't gonna handle no stage security gigs for ya up in heaven. And not 'cuz its gunless.
  9:20am marcury:

Nope it's Heaven's Devils up there
  9:24am Aaron:

doing the hora around my desk
  9:26am texas scott:

no beer in heaven?!?
then I ain't going!
  9:27am seang:

world boogie is coming!
  9:28am Lisa from Brooklyn:

boogieing the hora 'round my desk. well, it's a nice picture, anyway. Hail all from Brooklyn.
  9:30am Brian Woof Woof:

Doug, has this little gem reached your shores yet. http://www.chicoandrita.co.uk/
  9:30am Drummer Some:

Texas Scott to Seang to Lisa from Brooklyn—sounds like the Chicago Cubs double-play combination!
  9:30am Heaven:

there's no beer - sorry folks - but we do have weed and you are all thin and no one goes bald, oh and we have your lost teddy bear too....
  9:32am texas scott:

thank Heaven!
420 in da hizzle!
  9:32am Drummer Some:

I haven't seen that movie announced here yet, Brian. Iz gut?
  9:33am still b/p:

For about a year...been crazy for the cumbia..crazy. If I magically can manage to dance it well in heaven, I'll be slightly less beer-bummed.
  9:33am annie:

do you have that little black wool lamb doll i lost when i was 12, Heaven?
  9:35am glenn:

how about my core? do you have that, heaven?
  9:35am Hugo:

Thanks for the link to the Smith/Kowald record. I even found my old rip of Bobby Few - More or less Few - in there, with cover scans and nasty scratches and all. But I'll redo that one - from my second copy.
  9:37am dc pat:

..and Heaven, can you remind me what I was going to do that I thought was REALLY important one day when I was 9 but suddenly forgot what it was?
  9:37am Drummer Some:

A friend of Give the Drummer Some, the wunnerful DJ Bongohead, produced a killer three-CD set called Beginner's Guide to Cumbia. You can read about it here:

http://soul-sides.com/2010/09/cumbia/
  9:38am Drummer Some:

Marcury is referring to a album he heard playing on the stream before GtDS started. I shot him the download link, above in the comments. A great one for freejazzheads.
  9:41am Heaven:

Sorry annie - somebody traded Lamby for a six pack ( i know but I dont make the rules) - we've all kind of cores up here - but best of all is Sapo - we rock out to Sapo in Heaven - and we have an Eataly too
  9:43am Drummer Some:

Can I just say, Heaven, that I am honored you've tuned in today! Any requests?
  9:43am Brian Woof Woof:

Chico & Rita. Based on the life of Bebo Valdes, Chuco's dad. It's a 'proper' cartoon. Thoroughly recommended.
  9:45am marcury:

Heaven, is my cell phone charger up there?
  9:46am marcury:

Never mind, I found it.
  9:48am glenn:

i believe heaven would like to hear some erkin koray - estarabim.
  9:49am ?:

>>>Heaven, that I am honored you've tuned in today! Any requests?

Doug, let Hugo select one first, Heaven Can Wait.
  9:50am ?: = Paul Sherratt:

.
  9:53am still b/p:

What in heaven's name can the DJ play? Maybe some....harp? Dorothy Ashby?
  9:53am Big John:

The Hell he can.
  9:53am dc pat:

did Doug just say "fuckin?" Excellent.
  9:54am annie:

harpo...
  9:55am Drummer Some:

Heaven has great taste. I'd like to close my eyes and imagine Erkin Koray and Dorothy Ashby have a private little jam on their own cloud.
  9:55am Brian Woof Woof:

I think he added the g for full effect.
  9:56am glenn:

erkin koray is still alive and kickin' as far as i know.
  9:57am annie:

dcpat, i wasn't imagineering it, then; he DID utter it
  9:57am Drummer Some:

Oh Jesus, I killed Erkin Koray! I am sooo sorry Mr. Koray. All in the service of a little joke. I am so fuckin ashamed.
  9:57am Hugo:

I have about 1 gb of cumbia, sourced from usenet. Better send it off to the Drummer to have him sort it out ...
  9:58am glenn:

hey heaven, do you know the difference between mick jagger and an angry scotsman?
  9:59am still b/p:

The askin' is funny already, even before punchline.
  9:59am Drummer Some:

Hugo,
On behalf of the entire Give the Drummer Some community, I would simply piss myself in advance of receiving such an offer.
  9:59am glenn:

mick jagger says hey, you, get off of my cloud and an angry scotsman says hey mccloud, get off of my ewe.
  9:59am ?: = Paul Sherratt:

For anyone curious later on :
Heaven's Radio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjccjc5xoVw
  10:00am Brian Woof Woof:

If heaven is in your mind, then I've got a mind for a beer.
  10:01am ?: = Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
If your download collection was turned in to cds what size warehouse would you need ?
  10:02am dc pat:

oh, thas a keeper glenn.
  10:02am Brian Woof Woof:

Are hiding any Super Tens up your sleeve?
  10:04am Drummer Some:

Bing bing bing, we have a winner! Come up here and get your medallion, Glenn.
  10:04am Heaven:

Cumbia - Gabriel would like to hear some good Cumbia - Eremiel wants to hear Steele Beautttah and Tzaphqiel is still listening to A Reference Of Female Fronted Punk Rock 1977-89 - he's on disc 5 - and we banned twitter in heaven
  10:06am glenn:

i'd like to thank the academy, my voice coach, and all the little people out there, you know who you are. keep on believing, yo.
  10:06am gumby:

I love it when we go all African on this show!
  10:08am pokey:

whatever, douchebag.
  10:08am Hugo:

That's not counting close to 12 gb of Northern Soul, also from usenet. Paul, banish the thought! I couldn't manage without external hard rives, the current one is 1 tb.
  10:09am Drummer Some:

Gumby, whole mess of Nigerian funk coming up a little later...
  10:10am The Internet:

Ummm, heaven, you belong to me now. My lawyers will be in touch.
  10:12am Rupert Murdoch:

@The Internet. @ heaven. Speak to my lawyers. NOW.
  10:12am trrrs:

Own, lock, throw away the key
and maybe burn down the house, later,
if it doesn't make enough money.
  10:12am Hugo:

that should be "hard drives" - those gbs will wind their way towards Pittsburgh ... gotta feed the stream ...
  10:13am All together, now...:

In heaven, there ain't no tweets,
Just weed, tunes and fresh clean sheets,
And when we leave these streets,
Our friends will have beer, but soulless beats.
  10:15am Drummer Some:

I feel I should rename the stream HUGO GIVES THE DRUMMER SOME RADIO
  10:17am still b/p:

Got the craziest, out-of-left-veld Xmas gift comin': trip to S. Africa in April. Dunno if trip time will allow finding local live music, but hopin'.
  10:18am annie:

wow, bp!! word up!
  10:20am Margaret Thatcher:

Fight the good fight, Rupert old boy. Augusto and I are in your corner.
  10:20am Hugo:

For fear the hearts of men are failing,
For these are latter days we know
The Great Depression now is spreading,
God's word declared it would be so

I'm going where there's no depression,
To the lovely land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble,
My home's in Heaven, I'm going there

In that bright land, there'll be no hunger,
No orphan children crying for bread,
No weeping widows, toil or struggle,
No shrouds, no coffins, and no death

This dark hour of midnight nearing
And tribulation time will come
The storms will hurl in midnight fear
And sweep lost millions to their doom
  10:21am dc pat:

still b/p: you're 10 months too late.
  10:22am Carmichael:

Good mornin drummers and poets.
  10:24am annie:

"likin" that hugo
  10:25am still b/p:

Because of a loss or change 10 mos. ago...?
  10:25am ?: = Paul Sherratt:

Hugo,
Is that Carter Family song your phone's ringtone ?
  10:27am glenn:

it's 12:05 in newfoundland.
  10:27am Hugo:

Mine goes "miiaauww" - we dig cats around here ...
  10:28am Leigh:

Mornin' Doug
  10:28am dc pat:

WORLD CUP, MAN! C'mon!
  10:29am glenn:

sorry, i'm wrong. it's 11:57 in newfoundland.
  10:31am Drummer Some:

Oh, jeez, that's just great, Glenn. You embarrassed me in front of all these nice people.
  10:33am still b/p:

Yeah, I thought you might be gettin' vuvuzealous, there, but was it that long ago areddy? Summer (ours), no...?
  10:34am Carmichael:

BP, you're a lucky man to be a'travelin' that far. JoBurg has great music venues. Say hello to Johnny Clegg for me, if he still lives there.
  10:35am glenn:

i sowwy, doug.
  10:41am Drummer Some:

Hi Leigh!
  10:41am Elias:

The damage is done Glenn! Doug has to now regain an entire peg!
  10:44am marcury:

Loved that last cut! Though I imagine a meeting between King Arthur and Hanns Eisler would be more contentious.
  10:45am Hugo:

Gosh, Doug, that Urs Blöchlinger Tettet is off our blog. We're honoured!

I'm preparing a new post which should be up in the weekend. Keyword: Intercommunal.
  10:46am glenn:

i will take the blame. anyway, newfoundland time is 1.5 hrs different from the eastern time zone, don't ask me why. blame sir sandford fleming.
  10:47am still b/p:

What little I knew already and have lightly checked so far, tell you, brother, I have heard, what's the word from J-burg... danger, danger, danger. So improv seems unhappily dicey. Hate to be over-paranoid & programmed, tidy surface Tourist, but oughtn'ta travel in reckless off-leash oblivion neither. Tour sched. maybe too tight anyway. Going to Capetown, also, and to n'east region for some spot-the beastie outings.
  10:48am Drummer Some:

Hugo,
I am a proud owner of that Blöchlingler record in its original analog form. (But yes, I am a lazy chump and played your download.) What, I should run all the way down to the basement to get the vinyl?!
  10:51am Drummer Some:

Hugo,
The selection coming next is ALSO from your blog. The most beautiful thing I've heard all week. (And necessarily soothing after the horrid events of last Saturday.)
  10:51am Christopher:

I'm late to the game... can someone direct me to Hugo's blog?
  10:52am Drummer Some:

Christopher,
When the next track pops up on the playlist, there will be a link to it.
  10:52am Hugo:

Increasingly curious about your basement, Doug ...
  10:54am Christopher:

thanks Doug!
  10:55am Hugo:

http://inconstantsol.blogspot.com/
  10:57am jill:

great link, Hugo!
  11:02am Heaven:

2nd that - tis a great link - thanks hugo!
  11:02am Hugo:

Amalgam - that is a beautiful selection - see your point entirely ...
  11:09am trrrs:

So much I don't know, Hugo. Thanks.
  11:09am Christopher:

yeah I loved that Amalgam track.
  11:11am Paul Sherratt:

Don't know if you know the sax player Tony Coe but his son Gideon is a DJ at the BBC. I think he's recently been( easily ) persuaded to invest in a little Oliver Sain to delight his listeners' ears..
  11:13am Drummer Some:

Any relation to the fantastic artist Sue Coe?

http://www.graphicwitness.org/coe/coebio.htm
  11:17am Christopher:

that is some TIGHT playing behind Lowell there..
  11:18am Paul Sherratt:

Doug,
Not as far as I know. Which don't mean a thing ... but you'll enjoy this short and sweet piece later - Mr Coe in Paris with Steve Beresford and Lol Coxhill

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oSjjotraR4
  11:19am Leigh:

Just checked out the Sue Coe - wow, great stuff.
  11:22am Drummer Some:

Sue is amazing. Her expose of the American slaughterhouse/meatpacking industry was worthy of a Pulitzer if not a Nobel Prize. (I'm not being hyperbolic.)
  11:25am Brian Woof Woof:

@ Paul. Won a Jason Falkner CD once on Gideon Coe's Sat afternoon show once. Thought you'd be interested!!
  11:26am Paul Sherratt:

Re: requests. Could we have an extra hour ?
  11:28am Paul Sherratt:

Brian,
You're a double winner with the beagle and all ! Did you get to collect the pup when you intended ?
  11:32am monica:

oops, just had dropout for a few secs there...
  11:32am marcury:

Sue Coe is British so it is possible there is a relation.
  11:32am jesse:

couple of hiccups in the stream when you were talking, thought you'd like to know
  11:32am still b/p:

A moment or two in The Four Tempos cut reminded me...of all things...of The Archies' Sugar, Sugar, which came out a couple years later. And guys from the Tempos went to high school in Sugarland, Texas...whoaaaa!
  11:33am Heaven:

Doug - there are no time limits in Heaven - and there is no room for Rupert Murdoch....
  11:33am Drummer Some:

Stream still intact folks? I got a nasty "rebuffering" message. Everything cool?
  11:33am BZ:

Doug, if you want to keep this show going past noon, or maybe until... 5, that'd be cool. Or longer!
Keep giving us Give the Drummer Some!
  11:34am marcury:

Speaking of Sue Coe and South Africa:

http://www.graphicwitness.org/coe/suicide20.htm

Also getting some burps in the stream
  11:34am Brian Woof Woof:

@ Paul Sure did collect it but got caught in that snow on the way back, Sat afore Xmas. It's into everything. You're slipping in & out Doug.
  11:34am still b/p:

Intermittent.
  11:34am annie:

stream is cutting on and off-using winamp
  11:35am listener james from westwood:

No such thing as too much GTDS. Continue as long as you like. I can always DL Bryce's archive.
  11:35am jesse:

the stream is really gargling now
  11:36am Carmichael:

Yep, I'm getting hits on the pls stream.
  11:36am BZ:

Stream has chilled out now.
  11:36am Drummer Some:

I am going to attempt to re-set the stream/show. Hold on for a bumpy ride.
  11:36am Rupert Murdoch:

@ Heaven. Watch it sunshine we know where you live.
  11:37am The Internet:

Okay Rupert, the dark forces of fascism win. Please give back the stream.
  11:37am jesse:

you're going to start the show over?
  11:39am Heaven:

@ Rupert - sorry pal - no room for you or Hannity. Did I mention Eataly?
  11:40am dc pat:

still: little late here but I meant 10 months calculated out to April, but yeah. I'm going to see if I can get a gift trip to Brasil in 2014...
  11:40am Drummer Some:

OK, friends, watcha hearing, if anything?
  11:41am dc pat:

sounds good here.
  11:41am trrrs:

"You Can't Be Serious" just ended
  11:42am Heaven:

"I'm inviting you to my party" ahhhh sweet
  11:43am listener james from westwood:

"I Take You In My Arms" on this side. Good stream, no breaks.
  11:44am Drummer Some:

Sheesh. I am really getting good with these gizmos. (Commence back self-patting.) Just shut it all down and kick-started the sucker. Not sure what booted me off, but the saddle is full of ass once again.
  11:45am Leigh:

sounds good here
  11:45am The Saddle:

Nice imagery, cowboy.
  11:45am Rupert Murdoch:

The flames went higher. That's my kind of song.
  11:46am Paul Sherratt:

" Eataly " >> Errol Dunkley " I'm going to invite you to my party " some segue <smile> ! Not only does Bare-liskoni invite seventeen year old Ruby to his do but gives her $9000+ too. What a gentleman !
  11:47am Rupert Murdoch:

Johhny Cash. He's the man for me.
  11:48am Carmichael:

AOK
  11:48am Drummer Some:

I have a set of African marvels ready to crank out. I will air it after noon. I will play my closing theme, so the archive for the show gets spliced correctly, then we'll have some extra!
  11:50am Brian Woof Woof:

It's a bit like afters in the pub when the landlord locks the door and the locals get to stay behind.
  11:51am Drummer Some:

Brian,
The interesting thing about this radio/streaming experiment is: we are ALL "the locals."
  11:51am Paul Sherratt:

>>It's a bit like afters in the pub when the landlord locks the door and the locals get to stay behind.

Brian,

Doug or the Italian Prime Minister ?
  11:53am marcury:

Switched over to the stream, Cab Calloway's playing
  11:53am Brian Woof Woof:

@Paul. I was referring to Doug but that Italian mother takes the biscuit. He's as bad as Sepp Blaater in his own way.
  11:54am Drummer Some:

Whoops, anotheri rebuffering.
  11:54am Drummer Some:

Think I outsmarted that one. Thanks for the intelligence, Marcury.
  11:56am Brian Woof Woof:

This stream is as slippery as a media mogul!
  11:56am Drummer Some:

This next song (which was originally going to be the final selection of the morning) is the inspiration for the whole show!
  11:58am Brian Woof Woof:

This is a belting set, Doug. Buffering notwithstanding
  12:00pm Drummer Some:

Through all of those stream problems we only lost ONE listener. That is outstanding. Standing ovation to you, dear listeners.
  12:01pm marcury:

Not sure what I'm hearing now, but it doesn't sound like in heaven there is no beer. it was flute thing,
  12:01pm Drummer Some:

Jeez, got thrown off the horse again. I better quit whilst I'm behind. African set for next week....
  12:02pm marcury:

Okay back again
  12:03pm Alex in Illinois:

Isn't there a heaven that has a beer volcano?
  12:03pm annie:

had to reload the page, but i'm here
you continuing on?
  12:03pm Drummer Some:

Stream switched back from LIVE show to queued up streaming tracks.
  12:03pm listener james from westwood:

i'd rather listen to a stuttering fmu stream than hi-def commercial radio any day. stay warm, all!
  12:05pm annie:

Yuse guys are the best. Thanks for sticking with it!

What? No beer in heaven? That's just crazy talk.

*wheeling in a keg from the future to GTDS HQ *

Slowly going through this fine installment of GTDS.

The "multiupload.com" site ... all I get is a blank white page, but it may be due to being content-filtered out whilst at work. Did they get taken down?

I was trying to check out the link:

Here is that Smith/Kowald/Somer record:

1 hr, 37 mins into this show, that is some AMAZING trombone going on!
  3:43pm Van in DC:

This was a REALLY good show. I'm only up to the Amalgam piece, Prayer for Peace...that was just awesome. That entire set was fantastic. Doug, the Prayer for Peace was definitely from the Joy perspective for me :)

Will definitely be picking this show back up from here when I can!
  3:46pm Doug Schulkind:

Van, Multiupload voluntarily went dark sometime after this show. Nothing like self-censorship, eh?
  8:05am Van in DC:

Wow. Bummer about that. Picking back up with the past from the future in preparation for the present here soon.
  8:25am Van in DC:

Foxy grits in Oakland surely would have been worth singing about :)
  1:15pm Van in DC:

Bryce can wait another 28 minutes
  1:38pm Van in DC:

That phone ringing was me from the future.
