  8:51am texas scott:

holey moley,Friday already?!?
  8:52am annie:

morning TS!
  8:53am Drummer Some:

Both 8:51— it's a tie!
  8:55am Drummer Some:

I little (eensy and possibly weensy) Hanukkah-ish set (really just Jewish music, who am I kidding) set will start today's festivities.
  8:56am annie:

that's great mr drummer!!
  9:01am Drummer Some:

OK, everyone. Grab a bucket and start bailing!
9:12am Piotr the Polish Lorry Driver:

Talking of bailing we have a saying in our country 'You cannot have your kayak and eat it'
9:14am Piotr the Polish Lorry Driver:

Did I hear schmozzle?
  9:15am Unclear on the concept:

Wait, Hanukkah is a Jewish thing??
  9:17am Drummer Some:

Latkes for everyone (please supply your own napkin).
  9:19am still wim/p:

I will gladly pay you on the Feast of the Epiphany for a latke today.
  9:27am Drummer Some:

This show is coming to you live from the former home of the chief Rabbi of the neighboring synagogue Poale Zedeck. Apparently, he moved to a bigger house back in the '60s.
  9:31am Terry:

Had our latkes the first night..with sriracha sauce.
  9:32am Paul Sherratt:

>>This show is coming to you live from the former home of the chief Rabbi of the neighboring synagogue

I bet he's swing to this fab Bernstein right now.

Yes, he is indeed !
  9:32am Bob:

Nice to hear a Steven Bernstein song in the foreground instead of the background!
  9:33am Paul Sherratt:

swinging to ...
  9:35am dc pat:

ah, Squirrel Hill. Great neighborhood. Have you visited the Squirrel Hill Cafe yet?
  9:37am ken:

love the photo on the 10 inch of the prince nazarof, he's playing some kind of strange instrument on what i imagine is the lawn of a late 40's catskill's bungalow...and the whistling...
  9:39am dc pat:

and don't even mention latkes, ach! I ate about a thousand on Wednesday...and then saw the Nutcracker last night.
  9:43am dc pat:

ah! latkes and sriracha! Great idea.
  9:44am ken:

i wonder if the family of Oscar Levant, or even young Oscar himself, spent some time in your house? Would have been about the right time and place, no?
  9:44am Drummer Some:

Bob,
I always feel guilty when I relegate Bernstein to "music bed" status.

dc pat:
I have NOT been the Squirrel Hill Café yet. What should I order. (Please don't say latkes.)
  9:46am Drummer Some:

And a deep bow in your direction, Brother Paul.
  9:47am dc pat:

order anything dark brown and foamy. but I haven't been to the Squirrel Cage in a LOOOOONG time.
  9:48am Drummer Some:

Here is a description I just found online about the next record I'm going to play:

"Made in '69, in London, by Indian guitarist Amancio D'Silva and four of Britain's finest jazzmen, it serves up a chili-rich dish of hard bop, Indian raga, ska, early electric Miles, a little rembetika, Link Wray and Willis Gator Jackson... and Ennio Morricone spaghetti western scores! Reissued as part of Universal's Impressed-Repressed series of long unavailable British jazz masterpieces, the groove today is as irresistible and out of it as it must have sounded three decades ago."
  9:50am Drummer Some:

dc pat:
Squirrel Cage is an interesting Freudian typo! I think my went in there and found it really smoky. Pittsburgh doesn't have laws like in NYC banning smoking in bars. It's gonna take a while to acclimate.
  9:50am Merv:

Wow, wait to bait the hook for us all... I feel like a shark whose just smelled some fresh blood (although that's a much darker metaphor than I intended...)
  9:52am dc pat:

Not a typo actually. That's what the locals call it. Yeah those anti-smoking laws are beautiful. Sorry libertarians but it makes my attempts to see live music 5000 times better.
  9:53am Drummer Some:

dc pat,
I stand corrected. Good thing I didn't go bursting in there correcting all the locals. Imagine the shame.
  9:54am david:

thought i recognized that guitar tone. I play that Joe Harriot?Amancio D'Silva record all the time.....another great record I found through this show.
  9:56am Drummer Some:

David,
You are SO right about that record. It's called Hum Dono and you all can download it right here: http://tinyurl.com/2akknyk

(Thanks to one of your fellow listeners who posted it!)
  9:57am Merv:

Thanks Drummer & listener! I was frantically searching for D'Silva to no avail...
  10:01am Drummer Some:

Amancio's son, Stephano, is a top-notch chap playing guitar in the U.K. He maintains a website dedicated to his pops: http://www.amanciodsilva.com/
  10:01am dc pat:

to be honest, if they're smoking in there, I don't think I could hang there for 2 minutes.
  10:03am monica:

this is truly hitting the spot, doug. right on with the right on.
  10:05am Drummer Some:

Big love to Mike Cooper. If you're out there, mate, thank you for everything.
  10:06am Drummer Some:

Thanks Monica. You are a spot-hitter of the highest order.
  10:07am northguineahills:

awesome morning everyone!
10:14am Piotr the Polish Lorry Driver:

Saw Mr Cooper about a year ago in Cafe Oto. He played solo and with Lol Coxhill. Both were great but the drummer had it.
  10:22am jill:

Morning Kids!
Doug - were you referring to the David Wojnarowicz video at the NPG earlier?
J
  10:26am Drummer Some:

Hey hey Jill! I wasn't referring to that. What made you think so?
  10:30am jill:

you were talking about the chicken shit idiots at the smithsonian...maybe i am thinking of the wrong injustice.
  10:38am Drummer Some:

You're right, Jill. I WAS talking about that video. Didn't even realize it was Wojnarowicz's video. Have they no shame?
  10:38am seang:

Man, I love this song right off the bat
  10:41am jill:

As this track makes clear, first traces of "the funk" were originally discovered in Ethiopia.
  11:03am Carmichael:

Hiya Doug! Not a lot of time these days to do anything but work. The set looks great today.

Arbeit macht Frei .....
  11:08am Drummer Some:

Hiya Carm,
Keep those ears to the grindstone!
  11:08am lewis:

Checking in from the great flyover state of wisconsin - may the cheese be with you... (and the really good beer)
  11:10am Drummer Some:

Hey there Lewis,
I actually did just settle on a new favorite beer. It's outta Cleveland: Eliot Ness Lager by Great Lakes Brewing. Ever quaff it?
  11:15am Hugo:

Speaking of beer:

http://www.flamsbrygga.no/en/brewery/our-beers/

Working my way through 'em ...
  11:16am lewis:

Don't know that one, but will look for it. My fave is a Michigan beer from Bells called Two Hearted Ale. Plugging the local brews - the Tyranena Brewery from Lake Mills does some very nice work...
  11:19am Drummer Some:

Hello Hugo. Did you know that Hugo backwards is almost Ogun?
  11:20am Hugo:

Three spare bottles for Xmas from this lot:
http://www.kinnbryggeri.no/Heim.aspx

(drank the other three)
  11:21am oguH:

I'm quite aware of that ...
  11:23am Mr. Obvious:

"Eliot Ness Lager by Great Lakes Brewing. Ever quaff it?"

No, no...it's untouchable.
  11:25am RickInShepherdstown:

The music says dark rum, but the talk is beer. Making me thirsty. Only 4 hours until the workplace cracks open the winter ales.
  11:27am david:

too much beer, doug?
  11:27am Merv:

Now you REALLY want a beer:
http://tinyurl.com/29o6ayu
  11:29am Paul Sherratt:

Castle Lager anyone ?
  11:29am Leigh:

Hi Mr. Obvious & Doug - yes to Eliot Ness! Also Burning River from Greak Lakes
  11:31am Drummer Some:

Merv, gee thanks! Now I have take back that thing I said about no animals being harmed during the making of this program. Thanks a lot.
  11:34am Randy:

Got here just in time for Mr. Dyani. Nice !
  11:37am Drummer Some:

Good tidings Randy!
  11:38am Drummer Some:

Leigh,
I just GOT it. A beer named Burnning River from Cleveland. Nice!
  11:39am Leigh:

LOL! I know, it's great. I grew up there.
  11:44am Drummer Some:

I tend to stick to the Belgian wit, but there's some mighty ales there too ...
  11:46am Drummer Some:

Leave it to Hugo to get the conversation back onto more palatable liquids.
  11:48am Drummer Some:

Tuba alert! Tuba alert! Great tuba-led combo coming up next.
  11:51am annie:

doug, you are SO diggin this all today
  11:54am Bob:

I wondered whether that was Callendar himself on the tuba, so I just pulled out a bio and it confirmed that that was him on tuba. I knew him as an upright player (Mingus's first bass teacher!) but this was a nice surprise.
  11:56am Drummer Some:

Thanks for filling that info Bob. Do you work for tips?
  11:59am Drummer Some:

Thanks you for listening today. I love you all madly. (Not angry mad, happy mad.)
  12:04pm Bob:

You've given me more tips than I could ever count. I looked it up in John Goldsby's "The Jazz Bass Book," which is a collection of columns he did for Bass Player magazine. Most are bios of individual bass players, with musical examples. Highly recommended to everyone interested in jazz, bass player or not.
  12:22pm willyx:

love that Nusfrat ali Kahn - an artist greatly missed.
  1:04pm Sarf Essex Taff:

Never heard the show before this one, but saw a recommendation for it on a comments thread on The Guardian's website (about a similar show on the BBC which they are ceasing to carry). Really enjoyed the show and will be back to listen again.
