Squirrel Cage is an interesting Freudian typo! I think my went in there and found it really smoky. Pittsburgh doesn't have laws like in NYC banning smoking in bars. It's gonna take a while to acclimate.

I wondered whether that was Callendar himself on the tuba, so I just pulled out a bio and it confirmed that that was him on tuba. I knew him as an upright player (Mingus's first bass teacher!) but this was a nice surprise.

You've given me more tips than I could ever count. I looked it up in John Goldsby's "The Jazz Bass Book," which is a collection of columns he did for Bass Player magazine. Most are bios of individual bass players, with musical examples. Highly recommended to everyone interested in jazz, bass player or not.
