This show is coming to you live from the former home of the chief Rabbi of the neighboring synagogue Poale Zedeck. Apparently, he moved to a bigger house back in the '60s.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:31am
Terry:
Had our latkes the first night..with sriracha sauce.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:32am

>>This show is coming to you live from the former home of the chief Rabbi of the neighboring synagogue I bet he's swing to this fab Bernstein right now. Yes, he is indeed !

love the photo on the 10 inch of the prince nazarof, he's playing some kind of strange instrument on what i imagine is the lawn of a late 40's catskill's bungalow...and the whistling...
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:39am
dc pat:
and don't even mention latkes, ach! I ate about a thousand on Wednesday...and then saw the Nutcracker last night.

Fri. 12/3/10 9:43am
dc pat:
ah! latkes and sriracha! Great idea.

Fri. 12/3/10 9:44am

i wonder if the family of Oscar Levant, or even young Oscar himself, spent some time in your house? Would have been about the right time and place, no?
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:44am
Drummer Some:
Bob, I always feel guilty when I relegate Bernstein to "music bed" status. dc pat: I have NOT been the Squirrel Hill Café yet. What should I order. (Please don't say latkes.)
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:46am
Drummer Some:
And a deep bow in your direction, Brother Paul.

Fri. 12/3/10 9:47am
dc pat:
order anything dark brown and foamy. but I haven't been to the Squirrel Cage in a LOOOOONG time.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:48am
Drummer Some:
Here is a description I just found online about the next record I'm going to play: "Made in '69, in London, by Indian guitarist Amancio D'Silva and four of Britain's finest jazzmen, it serves up a chili-rich dish of hard bop, Indian raga, ska, early electric Miles, a little rembetika, Link Wray and Willis Gator Jackson... and Ennio Morricone spaghetti western scores! Reissued as part of Universal's Impressed-Repressed series of long unavailable British jazz masterpieces, the groove today is as irresistible and out of it as it must have sounded three decades ago."
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:50am
Drummer Some:
dc pat: Squirrel Cage is an interesting Freudian typo! I think my went in there and found it really smoky. Pittsburgh doesn't have laws like in NYC banning smoking in bars. It's gonna take a while to acclimate.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:50am
Merv:
Wow, wait to bait the hook for us all... I feel like a shark whose just smelled some fresh blood (although that's a much darker metaphor than I intended...)
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:52am
dc pat:
Not a typo actually. That's what the locals call it. Yeah those anti-smoking laws are beautiful. Sorry libertarians but it makes my attempts to see live music 5000 times better.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:53am
Drummer Some:
dc pat, I stand corrected. Good thing I didn't go bursting in there correcting all the locals. Imagine the shame.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:54am
david:
thought i recognized that guitar tone. I play that Joe Harriot?Amancio D'Silva record all the time.....another great record I found through this show.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 9:56am
Drummer Some:
David, You are SO right about that record. It's called Hum Dono and you all can download it right here: http://tinyurl.com/2akknyk (Thanks to one of your fellow listeners who posted it!)

Thanks Drummer & listener! I was frantically searching for D'Silva to no avail...

Morning Kids! Doug - were you referring to the David Wojnarowicz video at the NPG earlier? J
|
Fri. 12/3/10 10:26am
Drummer Some:
Hey hey Jill! I wasn't referring to that. What made you think so?
|
Fri. 12/3/10 10:30am
jill:
you were talking about the chicken shit idiots at the smithsonian...maybe i am thinking of the wrong injustice.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 10:38am
Drummer Some:
You're right, Jill. I WAS talking about that video. Didn't even realize it was Wojnarowicz's video. Have they no shame?

I wondered whether that was Callendar himself on the tuba, so I just pulled out a bio and it confirmed that that was him on tuba. I knew him as an upright player (Mingus's first bass teacher!) but this was a nice surprise.
|
Fri. 12/3/10 11:56am

You've given me more tips than I could ever count. I looked it up in John Goldsby's "The Jazz Bass Book," which is a collection of columns he did for Bass Player magazine. Most are bios of individual bass players, with musical examples. Highly recommended to everyone interested in jazz, bass player or not.
