Neil Hisst:
It now looks like we humans face the historically unprecedented problem of there being many more of us around than the planet can be expected to accommodate, and if, as seems likely, we’ve already tested all of the practical and most of the insane systems for organising ourselves socially, and if, as seems clear, all of those systems are just different routes – some being scenic but most being direct flights – to catastrophe, might it not be high time to work on gracefully replacing our species with something more clever and better suited for the long haul? Our evolution has rendered us the delusional, stroppy, short-lived, short-sighted, egotistical, and yet at least occasionally charming neurotics we are now and apparently always were. We may now have the tools, however, to quickly evolve ourselves into something new that, if we hit the nail on the head properly, could be smart, long-lived, low-impact, well adjusted, and in general, happy, peppy and bursting with love. Why not apply those tools to this effort, which I suspect is the only worthwhile major task left for us to do? If the most noticeable result of our having been here winds up being an eon of mass extinction, we’ll be classifiable as the bathwater that went out with the baby, so why not arise - ye infants of recession - from the bassinette of our biology while we can still hold our own heads up? | |
