October 6, 2010: One thing you can count on—when you hear a great track on WFMU, the rest of the album will suck. No need to thank us.

As of now someone's willing to pay $137.50 for 52 Jandek CDs, and 8 are willing to pay more than $50. Irwin, are you sure they don't just want it for your autographed book, so they can forge your signature?

Thanks. That one I'd known only as a jingle (background music, really, in a commercial) for White Owl cigars. Or maybe it was another brand.

bad ass tune - "It's Nice to Have Things" - trying to figure out if lyrics r deep or i'm overly pensive

did he just say "a piece of ass"? I pray nobody else heard that in the office here.

The lyrics made more sense in the cigar ad: "To really appreciate our cigar, you've gor to smoke one of theirs. "Take one puff of theirs, then take one puff of ours, that's the test."

Arcade Fire question: i enjoy this band; but how in the world did they go from ~indie to selling out MSG overnite? is this the best self-promoting band ever? how did this happen?
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:05pm
Matt from Springfield:
@DCE: It's usually Win who sings for Arcade Fire, first time I heard a female singing with them. I myself didn't know who this was until I checked.
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:08pm
Matt from Springfield:
@v k: Industry buzz combined with AF's willingness to promote: in '07 they were an officially declared "NEXT BIG THING" and so get all these interviews and covers of mags. You just KNOW when someone's been declared one. I myself think they're good but overrated. (Look at today's show title: obviously this then is the only good track from their new album!)

Great show Irwin, thanks. Just back from 3 months away from NYC. I am very depressed. Thanks for lifting some of the gloom.

Wed. 10/6/10 4:09pm
wtf?!:
This is my first time hearing the much heralded Arcade Fire...blech...cheap Cocteau Twins...and not even good.
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:10pm
Matt from Springfield:
Quiet down, Green Day! It was '94 when you were a NBT! And again in '96...and in '04/'05, and sort of in '08...look, you're not punk if you play the Tonys! So there!
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:13pm
Matt from Springfield:
@wtf?!: (WTF is that name?) That song is not typical of AF's sound, but if you don't like that, then don't bother with the rest of their material, which is mostly below that one. 80s sound, ultra-compress it, call it "indie".
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:13pm
Green Day:
Hey, this line of work doesn't come with retirement benefits. Gotta make hay while the sun shines.

|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:16pm

From the composer of "Rap! The Musical!" comes "Punk! The Musical!" Oh, that's right, shit... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Idiot_(musical)
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:17pm
Butthead:
Heh heh, hey Bevis, you're covered in Mary Lou Frond.

The BB was just in the wrong era--now in the 90s when they were competing along Grunge bands and still acting like they did on the show, that was funny!

LEONARD! This is more country than usual, musically almost a bit like Kristofferson.
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:39pm
Irwin:
I think Emmylou covered this
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:39pm
Aharon:
Not that I don't like this, but why do about 2/3 of Leonard Cohen songs also sound like brilliant parodies of Leonard Cohen songs?
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:39pm
Bob Zimmerman:
Cohen copies himself? You mean after he copied me first?
|
Wed. 10/6/10 4:43pm
Matt from Springfield:
By the end of Cohen's song, I say it's more Western. Country AND Western, you know, both kinds! Still, Emmylou would do a great version of that. @Aharon: Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery :)

Hi everybody! What a stressful day. I'm glad that's over! Whew! Time to celebrate. Oh and I'll defend Arcade Fire. Their "Funeral" is (probably) my vote for best pop/indie album of the 00s.

ROOFLESS:
What's the Amanda story? I always hear her on WFMU but my web searches have only led me to a relatively uninformative MySpace. Is this some noise guru's kid or something?
|
Wed. 10/6/10 5:31pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Roofless: Amanda IS the noise guru. AND the kid. And the GURU. And the NOISE.
|
Wed. 10/6/10 5:32pm
David:
Is she on Facebook? | |
|
Wed. 10/6/10 5:32pm
Confusedus:
Amanda is a blatant rip-off of underground purk nonagarian Miranda
|
Wed. 10/6/10 5:33pm
Matt from Springfield:
@Exception: Correct! Although strictly speaking, several tracks of this album have been played on WFMU, and the entire album probably will be soon. So, it's not really "a great track" but several over succeeding shows. @David: YES! You can join the Amanda group!
|
Wed. 10/6/10 5:34pm
