	11:12am trouble: oh is it ahistorical? i don't think so. I think it is anti ownership in that there is never creating from an entirely blank slate...I am not horribly interested in a version of the world that holds up the concept of actual"truth" or originality" as something otherwise i imagine.
	11:13am Cecile: I like Twitter. But it's just a tool for gettin' things done. For me it's a news feed and the water cooler. it doesn't replace real human contact, but it's good for keeping in touch with far-flung friends, and tracking your interests.

	11:16am Cecile: trouble I think the debate is the conflict between innovation and tradition in African-American music. Do you go with Sharon Jones or Nicki Minaj? In my world, you should be able to have both. And people like Outkast, even Kanye get that.

	11:31am trouble: i don't think the debate is between new and old but is it "valuable" to consider that new is better than old. that model supports capitalism in the constant quest to replace and buy new. But the thought of originality is used as the hook, where it actually isn't the issue.
	11:35am Cecile: I don't know. I love old, but seek out the new. I get bored easily, and I don't believe it is capitalism, but rather how my brain's wired.

	11:37am Andrew: Yeah, that's interesting. Obviously, there has to be SOME innovation, or a culture stagnates. But when the new is necessarily better, you get undiscriminating capitalism, which is what we kind of have now.

	11:46am Andrew: Yeah, it kind of pisses me off when I think about how much digging I had to do in my youth to find anything interesting. I wonder how much kids actually value what they find before they're on to the next thing.
	11:46am Vivian: Due to the internet, we have access to so much more music. Whereas twenty years, one can only search out different music by scanning the left of the dial.
	11:46am Cecile: But there is quality and volume. Think of a collector uploading all his/her rare jazz records. There's no corporate interest, and yet it's an overwhelming amount of content.

	11:49am Vivian: It depends on the individual and how open-minded they are. I think society likes the comfort of the familiar, what the herd knows. Look at chain restaurants, stores, tv shows, books,etc.
