Ken Katkin:

"Lisa Smokes Pot"? I located three versions of this song last week, but only Jon Solomon has the two recordings of it by the Volatile Molecules!
  10:09pm
Ken Katkin:

I'm listening to you, but I'll bet Jon S played one of the VM's versions of the same song tonight. It's Ben Hamurger Xavier night in the Garden State!
  10:13pm
holland oats:

just got back from o'ahu, waah!
  10:25pm
Ken Katkin:

You had everything right, Mike. But since you asked me to fill in the blanks: Ben Hamburger wrote "Lisa Smokes Pot" in the early 1980s, when he was a student at Walt Whitman H.S. in Bethesda MD. He recorded it with his high school band the Volatile Molecules. Then, he matriculated at Princeton University, where he formed a new band, Horton's Wrath, with whom he re-recorded "Lisa Smokes Pot." The song was played a lot on WPRB in the 1980s, not least because the titular "Lisa" *also* matriculated at Princeton University, actually a year or two before Ben did. When Ben graduated from college, he legally changed his name from Ben Hamburger to Ben Xavier. Lisa is now a professor at an Ivy League university.

  11:18pm

  11:19pm
lupica:

That version of Summertime comes to you courtesy of one of Doug Schulkind's old premiums.
  11:21pm
C:

you could always wear a cassette around your neck to draw attention away from the thumb drive.
  11:25pm
Tom ( The Bactrian Support Network ):

ahhhh COOL !!! it's LUUUUUUPICAAAAAAAAA !!! great hearing your show again !!!
  11:25pm
Ken Katkin:

Wow, Laughner! Though on further reflection I think that the version of "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that appeared on the unreleased cassette might actually be the same recording that later appeared on the "Take The Guitar Player For A Ride" release on Tim/Kerr in 1993. But it still rules! As does this Big Blood track, which I've never heard before.
  11:30pm
oldindiantim:

wow - Big Blood is amazing! never heard of this person
  11:32pm
lupica:

Tons of Big Blood for free download here: http://freemusicarchive.org/curator/WFMU/blog/Strange_Maine_Big_Blood
  1:14am
Kramer:

Tripod Jimmy's Autumn Leaves sounded to me like they were channeling PIL ... in a good way. Which was not uncommon for alt music from the late 70's and early 80's.
Welcome back Lupica. Really enjoyed the show.

miketp:
