Non-commercial indie-pop-rock, but with plenty of WTF? non-sequitur delightful/irritating moments; 90% stuff we've never heard before (45% you'll hate, 45% you'll love), 10% stuff we've heard before (5% you hate, 5% you love). (29 words, 6 numbers.)

Ah, Bob, is not the anticipation more often sweeter than what finally reults?!

So my sister just returned from Montreal and I had asked her to try and find out what makes a bagel a Montreal style bagel and haven't gotten an answer yet.

If it was a few years ago, I'd have said a Montreal bagel's distinction was probably in its flavor of cigarette smoke and ash.

wha?!? did your bagel fall onto the floor? mtl bagels are super tasty. they usually bake them, which can give a slight wood fire oven flavor, i suppose. though i've never had one that tasted overly smoky or burnt.

still b/p - somebody once said that their favorite beef-burger was eaten outside a paris cafe listening to a zepplin track and smoking a gauloises while a harley davidson idly purred beside them, waiting for the lights to change. i guess atmosphere is everything!

In my brief Quebec stops, the indoor atmosphere was formerly hazy and choked. Eyes, lungs, clothes, bagel dough....anything exposed to it would have to acquire and carry the taint. Not serious in the bias, though. I will gladly thank you on Tuesday for a Montreal bagel today.

MTL bagels are awesome. I nag the Bruegger's around here to get the pretzel bagel in. That's the closest to the Mont-Royal one here.

Skirkie, it has a twisty, pretzel like texture. And bits of crisp crust. I had the best meal recently @postmanpaul. I was eating a peanut butter and trail mix sandwich on Nicollet Mall in Mpls on Saturday and just people-watching. The Pride gathering was going on in a park 10 blocks away, and it was fun looking at revellers.

ANY real bagel is boiled in water first and then baked. One theory for why NY bagels can't be duplicated is the quality of the water we have. But I'm sure the water is good in MTL too.

hey bobw, I noticed that every full page ad in the New Yorker this past week was for Canadian travel/tourism or business - is this bagel-off part of their broadcast/viral marketing budget

I grew up with that ultra-soft water in Michigan. It *is* weird. And not nice to drink.
