"This Strange Effect" was a big hit for Dave Berry.

Pete Quaife's departure from the Kinks actually occurred at a very "poetic" moment in the career of the band (during the rehearsals for "Arthur") -- Ray Davies' songwriting was becoming more introspective, reflective, and insular especially from 1966 onwards... Right after "Arthur", it seems the there was a planned strategic shift to re-break into the US market -- one could even call it contrived. "Lola" really was phase 2 of the Kinks and Quaife left almost exactly at the end of the "pure" phase 1, as it were.
