Listener comments!

  9:19am
north guinea hills:

An instrumental of "Instanbul", curious and nice.
  9:20am
still b/p:

Good morning.
Why did Constantinople get the works?
  9:22am
soulboyluis:

surfing sausage -- niceness, shades of bonzo dog, huh?
  9:24am
Parq:

Luis, good call. Wouldn't have made the connection by myself, but you're right at that.
  9:40am
paul:

so totally can't wait to hear the new DDD.... just waiting for it to come in the mail any day now
  9:50am
dc pat:

new favorite song: San Diego Chargers
  9:54am
dc pat:

everybody all set for the World Cup? I'm rooting for anybody but France! Yay, go teams!!
  9:55am
north guinea hills:

I'd like to see the "San Diego Chargers" played on the PA at Qualcomm Stadium.
I'm taking Friday off to go watch the Mexico-South Africa game at my friend's Mexican restaurant/club/gallery. can't wait! (hoping the U.S. makes out of the first round)
  9:58am
Mebob:

Why everybody but france??
  9:58am
dc pat:

I'm thinking US and England make it out of the first round but that only means that Germany will prob be waiting for them next.
  9:59am
dc pat:

Because France cheated against Ireland.
  10:00am
dc pat:

this is great Wire!
  10:02am
Mebob:

Ahh, of course! I forgot about that. Rep.Ireland always makes a tournament interesting..1990-94 jack charlton!
  10:05am
dc pat:

I was bummed for a week after the France v Ireland match. Ah, my fave Oh Sees! Great set!
  10:09am
jk:

but everybody cheats in the world cup, that's how the game is played
  10:10am
dc pat:

they cheated against IRELAND, man! Pay attention...
  10:11am
jk:

ahhhh, gotcha
  10:13am
dc pat:

sheesh...
  10:13am
mike cooper:

Surfing Sausage by Melody Four is from a compilation on NATO Records titled NATO calling.
  10:16am
Mebob:

Do you remember Portugal v Holland 2006 W/cup game?.. Both teams finished the game with nine men after a game which equalled the World Cup record for bookings - 16 - and broke the record for red cards 4!!! I didnt want that game to end!
  10:19am
Mebob:

They kicked lumps out of eack other! amusing spectacle lol!
  10:21am
soulboyluis:

yup, too much football...no homo
!!
  10:22am
dc pat:

yep, the more the cards the bettter. although I don't mind a match where the ref just lets 'em play.
  10:23am
north guinea hills:

I did watch Holland/Portugal 2006. I want a game where there are just 7 vs 7 at the end.
  10:24am
dc pat:

or 1 v 1--just 2 goalies against each other
  10:24am
Mebob:

It's all part of the fun of W/Cup.. especially the neutral games. When Its your own team screwing around It's NOT so much fun :(!!
  10:25am
north guinea hills:

well, FIFA doesn't allow any fewer then 7 players to play a game. 5 red cards = forfeit.
  10:25am
dc pat:

yeah. I REALLY want the US to do well. Donavan > Altidore, Donavan > Altidore, that's all they have to do.
  10:26am
dc pat:

ngh: ah, did not know that.
  10:27am
Mebob:

I think after a side is reduced to 7, the game is cancelled and replayed.. dont hold me to that one tho.. have to check!
  10:31am
Lizardner Dave:

I hope someone wil be keeping up with the World Cup death toll again this year: http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/world_cup_death_watch/index.html
  10:32am
Mebob:

duh..sorry I didnt see you had already said that!
maybe thats what Holland were playing for in the end..
a replay better than going home!
  10:33am
dc pat:

I heard that Holland and Denmark has had al Queda death threats already
  10:34am
dc pat:

last night my daughter and I made a HUGE world Cup bracket sheet for the dining room. I'm going to drive my wife insane of the next month...
  10:34am
BSI:

ah, just tuning in... followed the scent of groovy tunes & world-cup chatter.
.......hi honey, I'm home..........
  10:36am
Mebob:

Im all excited now, can't wait :) !!
  10:40am
north guinea hills:

My gf is Mexican and HATES soccer (she used to live next to the stadium in Monterrey). I told her she won't see me for the next month.

I saw every game in 1998 and 2002(couldn't find all of the games in '94). 2006 was hard as I couldn't take enough time off of work, but I saw most games. This year I have tons of vacay time to use, so I'm going to see most of the games.
  10:43am
dc pat:

every single game is either on ESPN, ESPN2, or ABC...as noted on our bracket sheet...
  10:45am
Mebob:

You should tune in to a BBC commentary coverage,, US commentators dont get it, US soccer terms suck haha! offense.. I think you mean attack ..etc
  10:46am
BSI:

....and supposedly ESPN actually sprung for experienced commentators this time 'round, rather than some ignorant hack from the baseball business, or whatever that disaster was..... but it's been funny to reflect on how agonizing the decision has been, which pub to roost in for Saturday's match...
  10:46am
north guinea hills:

Ow, my frickin' ears!
  10:46am
dc pat:

ah, they've been getting better...as long as they have that Scottish guy announcing..
  10:47am
catpatz:

oh the iceland and uk were so so bad. i watched for the first time this year . . . was curious, but will never be again i think
  10:47am
north guinea hills:

Harkes isn't bad as an announcer, but no more Tommy Smythe!
  10:50am
mike cooper:

In Serbia they call this style of music" Turbo Folk" and it is associated with right wing neofascists - seems it might be spreading.
  10:50am
BSI:

100X agreed about Smythe. Although his cheez-ball catch-phrases have mellowed over the years.........
  10:52am
Mebob:

What other terms do the us commentators use? Is it eg, left flank..? instead of "wing"
Also some guy suggested that the goals were made bigger so as to have more goals and to make it more exciting!?!
  10:54am
Mebob:

Sorry, fair play, that was a few years ago now, circa 1994!
  10:56am
NO-no:

ok ok, behold. ukraine's last eurovision entry: Roman centurions, Duchamp's chocolate grinders and, most importantly, a patriotic drum solo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBbVdtEhUVw&feature=related
  10:57am
north guinea hills:

shoegaze revival... can't complain, actually i really dig.
  10:59am
dc pat:

yeah, Americans have a real problem with the lack of high scores but I don't get that. They changed the balls this time to hopefully allow for more goals.
  11:00am
seang:

Sonny and the Sunsets!!!!!!
  11:04am
BSI:

DCP: the one explanation that makes the most sense to me is: Americans just have a reflex-action against any sport or cultural movement that Americans didn't create themselves, or learn to market themselves. .. So they'll think up a million specific gripes against the game but at the heart, it seems to be some wacky patriot sickness, refusing anything that puts the USA in a truly competitive environment with the rest of the world. ..

...it's a thought, anyway.
  11:10am
dc pat:

BSI: could be--some American football-fanatic guy I was talking to the other night seemed reasonable on most other levels but just blew off the whole sport of soccer because it was "too low scoring." So he'd watch if the final scores were more like 23 to 5? (didn't get to ask him that) I think that'd be boring. It's all about slight edges.
  11:14am
Mebob:

1966!
  11:15am
bobw:

the simpson's episode featuring football/soccer sums up feelings about the game. kent brockman "he gets the ball.... he holds it.... he holds it.... holds it...." and the spanish speaking announcer (in spanish) "he gets the ball! he holds it!! holds it!!! HOLDS IT!!!!!"
  11:18am
BSI:

agreed dc pat: I'd prefer the tension of a 2-1 at the 85th minute vs. some astronomical point-spread like that. Of course there's boring matches in any sport (two defense-heavy teams = watching paint dry) but hell, I guess it takes all kinds. Basketball scores seem hilarious to me for this reason.
  11:23am
dc pat:

BSI: feel the same way w/ basketball, THAT'S boring.
  11:24am
dc pat:

Simpsons: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noOHdTQd6H8
  11:30am
paul:

this TG is really making me wish i had a car so i couldve gone to see Windy & Carl in Detroit last night
  11:43am
dc pat:

later folks, go US! go Deutschland!
  11:44am
Mebob:

Bob. Did you enjoy Eurovision 2010?
In the uk terry wogan used to commentate on it for many years. He was so funny, made it worth watching for a laugh. hes retired now tho :(
  11:46am
north guinea hills:

Windy & Carl are still together? RAD!
  11:53am
Mebob:

Terry Wogan uk eurovision.. his reason for retiring was, year after year countries seemed to conspire in voting agenda's. He made fun of it for years but grew tired of the political I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine voting patterns. he always knew who was going to vote for who..
  11:54am
Mebob:

..regardless of song content!
  4:26pm
djarnis:

hey BW great show ..
a correction i think that The Fatales song is called Darkened Coutnry
