A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

  Thu. 6/3/10 9:04am ffrr:

Good morning Trouble & listeners. Any thoughts on the NYTimes spread on M.I.A.? Apparently she was none too pleased. The sample of 'Born Free' sounds great though.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:04am jamesie:

hup!
Thu. 6/3/10 9:04am north guinea hills:

When has there not been a persistent repetition of bird calls?
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:07am trouble:

good morning all! james have you moved? and sadly i haven't had a second yet to read the M.I.A piece. what is all the hubub about?
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:11am patrick:

trouble! happy Fog to you! i regret to tell you im not much longer for the east coast.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:11am jamesie:

Hi Trouble, yes I am in a rented house-sitting until middle of July when I will move to Islington goodbye Chiswick :)
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:15am passepar2:

good afternoon trouble... tuning into wfmu for the first time in a while (just been 3 1/2 months in central america) and a dandy pleasure fer sure to be finding yr troublesome self... gracias!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:15am ffrr:

The M.I.A. piece exposes her newly posh L.A. lifestyle against her Sri Lankin 'terrorist' theories, along with conflicting accounts of her father's involvement w/the Tamil Tigers.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:16am MIchael:

Morning Trouble! M.I.A got turned into a caricature by Herschberg and gets called out on a bunch of stuff about her past. An engaging read to say the least...whoa! never heard this Louise Bourgeois track sweeet!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:16am trouble:

wow central america for 3 1/2 mos, that must have been wild...
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:19am -otte:

i do love your playlist (colleen and so great Louise Bourgeois's song).Do you understand the words she says?It is great.I love this woman!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:20am trouble:

hmmm, M.I.A gets rearranged by the same media that help create her, wow
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:20am texas scott:

love the haunted ballroom stuff.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:20am trouble:

i think the louise is making sound poem nonsense out of slang words...?
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:23am -otte:

no.It maks sense. "otte" is meaning little. When a woman do something she does low.It is an irony about man's look.Very good song!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:24am still b/p:

MIA v. NYT looks like collision of pitching-for-public-perception agendas. Who knows where earnestness lies? (That's a question I might repeat randomly today, here and elsewhere, 'kay?)
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:24am listener mark:

good morning Trouble
good morning every one
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:26am listener mark:

truffle flavored french fries! Wow! The rich sure know how to live it up!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:28am passepar2:

spent most of the time on an organic farm on Isla de Ometepe... howler monkeys, scorpions, exotic birds and tarantulas amongst the neighbours - great place fer sure, however, coming back to "civilization" = Lisburn, Northern Ireland - I'm not sure which is really the wild?...

on a musical note - cumbia and dancehall rule!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:28am listener mark:

From the NYT article,
"Among the offenses listed was M.I.A.'s predilection for truffle flavored French fries."
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:29am still b/p:

I'll have a sturgeon roe shake and some chocolate-covered Krugerrands, please.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:30am trs:

me, I like garbage flavoured french fries; the raunchier the better.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:31am trs:

therefore.

Yes, Nabisco Cracker Box Factory
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:38am dale:

this sat is beacon town-wide yard sale day, so you can get your art and thrift jones on with one stone.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:39am Cecile:

That Lynn Hirschberg has stabbed a lot of other people in the back. MIA is full of contradictions. So were the Sex Pistols. So were the Clash. I hope over time her politics become more informed.
Thu. 6/3/10 9:40am north guinea hills:

I'm going to one of the Belgium fry places and see if they have truffle flavored fries.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:40am Cecile:

And the truffle flavored French Fries? MIA put up the audio, and it's actually the journalist who is obsessing over the fries!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:41am patrick:

saw a bunch of her current and older work at ICA boston a few years ago, its was great, although it was difficult for most of my High Schoolers to wrap their heads around. the work at the Dia is fantastic. she will be missed.

good luck with the end of the school year trouble, any chance you might be making your way yo Vacationland this summer?? hows DJ Icepack?
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:44am Francis:

In the sound poem,Louise says masculine words and gives their imaginary grammatical feminine connections which don't appear in french dictionnary ,as un chameau, une chameaute ( a camel , a camelle ! ). So another way to express her male/female links obsessions ,I suppose.
Good morning Trouble.

  Thu. 6/3/10 9:47am Cecile:

All this talk about MIA makes me want some french fries.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:47am trouble:

bonjour patrick. and bonjour francis, thanks for the louise translation, that clarifies it. Patrick YES we want to come up to see you b4 you exit. what's the departure date? icepack is great, tired of having to get up early for school, as ready for vacation as i am.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:52am Maria D:

All this talk about MIA makes me want some truffle-flavored french fries. Do they sell those now at Mickey D's?
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:54am gib:

or french fry flavored truffles.. hmm.. good morning modern world.
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:54am Cecile:

Nah, but the Bulldog in Minneapolis has some yummy truffled tater tots. Just don't bring the leftovers home - everything will smell like sexy, expensive dirt...
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:55am patrick:

not sure about an exit date, late july, maybe later. you are all welcome to stay with Emily and myself.

they have a splendid beer selection, Brian.

Thanks, Robert!
  Thu. 6/3/10 9:59am dc pat:

say these noisettes are pretty swell.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:02am Shawn:

Is "pagina dos " a remix of The Books?
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:02am Cecile:

LOL! I like Robert's take on it, but truffled tater tots are surprisingly tasty. And they have little black flacks on 'em.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:05am dc pat:

flacks, eh? From german anti-aircraft divisions?
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:05am Cecile:

agh. flecks...
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:06am still b/p:

When the bars close, classy drunks hit the diner for truffle-flavored posh-browns with cheese.

Whenever asked what the secret ingredient is in some wonderful dish, I respond "Flavor flecks."
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:09am dc pat:

darn, I thought they were adorned with little bits of European history. Oh well, not interested...
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:11am David:

Oooooh, thank you for the Clientele.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:12am Brian:

@dc pat: You're talking "pop rocks," now.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:17am Francis:

@ Robert Sietsema : oh, yesterday I wrote (on internet) and described the sleeve of New Wave Hot Dogs Yo La Tengo 2nd album and quoted your name. You are the one who took the photography, aren't you ? I really love this sleeve and have put the record on one of my living rooms wall ! It's crazy how the man smiling in front of the sandwiches van (the owner of the van ?) looks like my elder brother ,his ringer ! Was the scene in Manhattan ?
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:19am listener stu:

Morning ( afternoon ) Trouble!

Thursday, Louise Bourgeois ( RIP ) , transporting music, and truffel flavored potato chips! What else could you want in early June ? thanx
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:23am Brian:

I'm embarrassed to say I made my mother buy me this album.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:23am still b/p:

  Thu. 6/3/10 10:23am trouble:

good morning stu!
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:27am listener stu:

been playing your CD over and over ! what a wonderful rendition of "Compared To What " !! I'll have a couple surprises for you when we come to NY in July ! Cheers !
Thu. 6/3/10 10:28am Adrian in London:

Just got here. There was a traffic jam. God I need to hear some soothing sounds right now. Hey Trouble, the marathon premium is great; that Dusty song is amazing, obviously St Etienne sampled it for Nothing Can Stop Us. It's locked in my car CD player for the "summer"
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:32am dc pat:

if there's one tune I really needed right now it was #3 by ?. Thanks troubs. (almost sounds like they've auto-tuned her)

  Thu. 6/3/10 10:34am dc pat:

if you could play Teenage Heaven by Eddie Cochran, I would do a back flip. For some reason I played that for my kids on guit last night but couldn't remember it all..
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:45am David:

Seems to be a recent surge in playing foreign language speech on WFMU. Interesting once or twice, but boring and irritating now
Thu. 6/3/10 10:45am By Robert Sietsema:

special thanks to Scott, Jason, Doron, Liz and whomever else for the Primavera coverage
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:48am Brian:

Those birds should learn to speak English. This is 'merica!
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:50am Cecile:

Granola is super easy. I should do it more.
I gotta start making yogurt. The Greek stuff has gotten so expensive since everyone discovered it is delicious.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:50am Brian:

Yogurt. Yes! I can't find good yogurt.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:51am LizGig:

Local is all the rage now - except, of course, when it comes to coffee.
Thu. 6/3/10 10:51am Adrian in London:

I can barely make a cup of tea but I do make a mean rye loaf when i get a few hours on a Sunday. Hand baking, none of yer machines, mind.

here are pics of my pickle barrel composter
http://www.flickr.com/photos/rocketnumber9/sets/72157617912880786/
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:53am Cecile:

I have a stand mixer, that's practically a bread maching. I gotta start making pizza crust again. That's easy, too.

I did make a pile of greens out of stuff I would have tossed, kohlrabi top and some bok choy that was getting droopy. Threw in a bag of frozen mustard greens and a smoked porkchop. Best greens I ever ate, for sure
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:54am dc pat:

CLOSE enough, thanks trouble...
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:54am Barney:

3 yr old girls around here really really really like the "winnie the parakeet" song and want to hear it again. Radio is hard to explain to kids these days.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:54am kyle:

Re: living off the grid - I just finished a terrific book "A Different Kind of Luxury" by Andy Coturier about 11 Japanese folks tired of the treadmill of capitalism, and striving for lives of self-sufficiency.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:54am trs:

Nice diy composter, Mike. Where'd you get the pickle barrel? D'you think I could add worms to one (and they'd enjoy the tumbling ride) ?
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:55am Jennique:

I'm a part of North Brooklyn Compost Project. Surprising how much waste I accumulate each week.

Thanks for playing Eddie Cochran. Three Steps to Heaven is my fave tune by him.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:55am Cecile:

Trouble, for future reference, there is a delightfully awful parakeet song sung by Audrey Williams, Hank's wife that reminds me of the parakeet song.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:56am Priscilla:

I love making things from scratch -- especially baked goods. I mostly enjoy the challenge, like chemistry experiments. My husband says I'm just being cheap, and maybe that's part of it, too. But he eats the stuff, so...
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:57am Cecile:

I'm not so much a baker, but I do really like to improvise over a saucepan, skillet or salad bowl. And I haven't put my crockpot away in months.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:57am jw:

I only have heard the Cambodian pop track, but I suspect it's:

Ros Sereysothea - Tngai Neas Kyom Yam Sra "Today I Drink Wine"
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:57am Dickdong:

Used to bake my own bread back in the 70's. Got a breadmaker now. Makes a nice rye loaf.
Good composter Mike. Mine's one of those open bottom types that stands on the ground. Don't know where the worms come from - they just appear.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:58am Carmichael:

Good morning Trouble, and those who follow Trouble ...
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:58am Brian:

Make yourself some dilly beans when local green beans come in at market. Never buy pickles again!
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:59am Cecile:

Oh, yeah. You can even make them from leftover pickle juic eand blanched beans.
  Thu. 6/3/10 10:59am LizGig:

Does anyone here do lactose fermenting?
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:00am mike:

there's a pickle store on the LES that gives barrels away thurs. mornings.
And ya, you can probably add worms... you need to leave scraps in the barrel for 5 weeks. then you toss them in a bin where they further decompose but rats wont' touch it. It's not food to them anymore. At this point it might be best to add worms.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:00am Brian:

@DickD: When you grind your own flour, it comes out warm and ready for the yeast. (Quite a chore, though ...)
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:05am LizGig:

In an hour, I will be baking a vanilla cake with chocolate butter cream topping and an apple walnut cake. Using duck eggs, which gives a nice colour.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:06am Dave B:

  Thu. 6/3/10 11:06am Cecile:

Yes, please. *holds out plate*
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:07am Brian:

I'm thinking about making up a batch of "Freedom fries aux truffes."
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:08am dc pat:

I compost with a steel trash can but I have to expand--the pickle barrel looks good. I bake bread all the time--once you get the kneeding done all you have to do is wait for it to rise.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:08am Carmichael:

OK, that's it. I'm off promptly at noon for a good drippy cheeseburger and sweet potato fries.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:10am dc pat:

for the veggies, making your own seitan is pretty cool too. You ring out a bunch of dough under water for 15 minutes or so and then boil it in a broth. makes amazing BBQ
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:10am trs:

oo, good reminder carmichael. farmer's market/eats day at the civic square. g20 guys blocking the enjoyment in the coming weeks.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:12am trouble:

thanks for th parakeet suggestion cecile, i will look for it.Barney did i ever send you the copy of last year's premium that you needed? i am such a sopace head these days....
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:12am Brian:

@dc: I'm all over that. Gotta get me some gluten.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:13am Carmichael:

I made some cool veggie burgers for my brother this weekend with lentil beans and diced veggies.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:17am dc pat:

ah, that's ok. but you guys gotta get a Cochran box set or something. That guy was the real king.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:18am erella:

chet baker always makes me so emotional. Thanks trouble
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:20am Carmichael:

Gene Vincent's my man. Cochran is a very close 2nd, though.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:22am Cecile:

I have the 2-record UA set with the liner notes by Lenny Kaye, which is referenced in Steven King's The SHining. It's essential.
Thu. 6/3/10 11:25am By Robert Sietsema:

ahhhhhh joe bataan - thank you trouble!
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:26am Barney:

We haven't gotten it yet, so maybe it slipped your mind. No worries--this year's promo is working well. I'm worried the kid will be asking me how the parakeet cage's latch broke all night (and we'll be stuck on a plane to Bucharest via Amsterdam). I'll think of some acceptable explanation I hope.
Thu. 6/3/10 11:27am listener james from westwood:

oh, this is my very favorite joe bataan cut. thanks so much, trouble!
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:28am dc pat:

Gene Vincent is most excellent. His sound to me is thee rockabilly sound....him and Johnny Burnette
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:28am dc pat:

yeah, this Joe Bataan is killer.

Love Wild Honey! Beach Boys rule. 1st concert I attended in '76 'Beach Boys 'Love You' tour. Brian sat onstage behind a piano, in a white bathrobe and would occasionally play along a little. Most of the time, though, he was just looking at the audience in a 1000 mile stare. Great show!
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:40am Carmichael:

Jeff Beck made a killer Gene Vincent tribute album with his band The Big Town Playboys.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:48am pjmfx:

I look forward to this show more and more every time I listen to it. Thanks much, Trouble for sharing your modern world.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:50am trouble:

that's so nice to say, merci.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:58am Francis:

Meg Baird played just after Chet Baker :very good choice Trouble : two poignancy heartbreaking voices I love.
I have discovered a french female singer called Lou ,she has just released her third album "Et apr├Ęs, on verra" :Francoise Hardy,Mendelson,Mazzy Star atmospheres, purhaps you would enjoy it (available on emusic).
Great versatile show ,thanks.
  Thu. 6/3/10 11:59am MIA:

BTW -- I throw leftover truffles, Cosmopolitan cocktail garnishes, and reporters' severed ears and fingers in my limited edition kevlar compost barrel. I don't turn it myself -- the help does that.
