@DDGGD, I'm glad one of us gets it. It's the kind of morning where I'm glad my five year old helped me pick out records last night (based on the covers he liked.)

Tom L:
Hi everybody, I'm here, but I don't really feel like I'm "here."

Dum Dum Guy at the Gates of Dawn:
I was going to request J. Kane to follow Branca and you beat me to it. Despite my nonsense, this is one helluva set. At least you have one listener. :)

The last time I heard the name Henry Kaiser he was deep sea diving in a Werner Herzog film. Interesting guy!
|
Sun. 5/2/10 6:43am
Dan B:
@Andy, that worked out quite nicely on the heels of that set, eh? Gorgeous liquid groove crunch in that one. @DDGGD, it's the sullied side of Sullenberger. This is the best Grateful Dead cover of the many issued by the SST label @Tom, nice to have you "along." @Richard, thanks!

Robert1014:
I loved the piece you played by the Ex. (I loved DOG FACED HERMANS, a band their current (?) guitarist played in...I saw the Hermans by accident at CBGBs opening for another band, and I went to see them intentionally several times later, including their last shows before disbanding. I missed the beginning of your spiel about "no wave." What documentary are you referring to?
|
Sun. 5/2/10 6:47am
Robert1014:
The piece you're playing now illustrates that the problem with the Dead was not just in their aimless playing but in their aimless "composing." Ugh.
|

jk:
hey dan just awoke hk played last night at stone in nyc did you go thanks for show
|
Sun. 5/2/10 6:53am
@6:47 Robert1014:
Ever listen to the Miles Davs album At The Fillmore? It's not composition. It's jazz.
|
Sun. 5/2/10 6:56am
Dan B:
@Robert, yeah, I agree about the Dead. Totally love/hate them. The documentary was "Kill Yr Idols." I wouldn't exactly recommend it, but it's fun to see those No Wave folks talking about the music looking back. @JK, I did not see HK last night, did you?
|
Sun. 5/2/10 7:01am
Robert1014:
KILL YR IDOLS, right! I actually have that! Your discussion of the contretemps between the old No wavers and the new sounded familiar. I would recommend it, actually.

It's like our annoying politicans over here trying to get elected right now Dan, you can apologise and it helps a little bit but it still happened!
|
Sun. 5/2/10 7:13am
Dan B:
If I could have added a footnote verbally, it would have said that I'm not really sorry.

Bas, NL:
Well, on a positive note.. it cured me of a positive feeling towards senseless guitar rock for a long time to come!
|
Sun. 5/2/10 7:19am
andy/s:
You could just 'accidentally' leave your mic on and say that you're not sorry. That's what the Prime Minister did this week. Lexie Mountain's voice is powerful, man!
|
Sun. 5/2/10 7:22am
Dan B:
@Bas, you're welcome, anytime! @Andy, I should pay more attention to politics, it would definitely improve my mic skillzes.
|

Sun. 5/2/10 8:46am

@Andy, there's a great sampler on Smithsonian folkways called Classic Maritime Music. Awesome stuff. There's also a great collection called Rogue's Gallery that has all kinds of contemporary bands and musicians doing shanties -- Nick Cave, Sting, White Magic, Akron/Family, Rufus Wainwright, etc etc etc
