i picked paul bley up at the des moines airport in 1978 and hung out with him while he did his gig at grinnell college. he had never been to des moines and seemed genuinely moved by the experience.

i just saw bobby bradford this weekend in philadelphia - performing with frode gjerstad's circulasione totale orchestra. it was an incredible performance. but i spied more than a dozen folks that looked more on the bradford end of the spectrum leaving after the first song.

!!! God, that's great. All the Darby stories I've heard revolved around Springsteen's show there in 76 (?). Apparently, it was the same week he was on the covers of both Newsweek and Time. I was of the Guided by Voices/Yo La Tengo era of Grinnell shows. To bring things full circle: I talked with Ira Kaplan about wfmu. Of course.
