Thu. 1/14/10 12:33pm Carmichael:

Thu. 1/14/10 12:33pm minty badger:

Totally digging this from London right now - thanks!

Thu. 1/14/10 12:33pm a guy in a chair in a cube:

Thu. 1/14/10 12:37pm dc pat:

Thu. 1/14/10 12:41pm JCityJensen:

Hey Scott - Just got your marathon cd - great tracks thanks!

Thu. 1/14/10 12:43pm annie:

anyone have a great idea for channa dal? have this bag of beans..

Thu. 1/14/10 12:48pm Marshall Stacks:

Annie, keeping with the "good for your heart" theme, I see.
Chole bhatura is a great cold weather dish. (Chole = channa.)

Thu. 1/14/10 12:50pm Wendy del Formaggio:

Annie, they're also good for if your car's tires get stuck in the snow or on the ice. Uncooked, of course.

Thu. 1/14/10 12:51pm annie:

thanks for the tip marshall... i have an indian cookbook here, looking it up now. thanks..

Thu. 1/14/10 12:51pm BSI:

also, play the Devdas soundtrack loudly (the newer one with SRKhan) while cooking. ... it may not improve the recipe but it confuses the dog nicely.

Thu. 1/14/10 12:52pm Mark Williams:

this Orphan Fairytale record was one of my favorites from last year. There's a couple friends of mine who are disturbed by the cover image; I tend to have it out when they're over...

Thu. 1/14/10 12:52pm annie:

so if i get stuck in a snow drift i can cook a few and then throw the rest of the beans under the tire and have an escape! cool.

Thu. 1/14/10 12:54pm J-Mar:

Annie, I suggest dhokla: Soak the dal overnight in water, then drain. Place in a blender with some fresh ginger, salt and asafetida if you have it. Put in just enough yogurt so that when you pure the soaked dal, you have a pourable batter -- not too thick, not too thin. Pour into a bowl, then stir in a teaspoon of baking soda. Now pour it into a greased baking dish -- one that is small enough to fit in a steamer, and steam the dohkla until it sets and is firm to the touch. (Should be a little fluffy like bread.) Take out of steamer and let cool. Fry spices -- black mustard seed, asafetida, curry leaves -- in some oil, then pour over the dhokla.

Thu. 1/14/10 12:56pm annie:

wow, sounds wonderful!!

Thu. 1/14/10 12:59pm J-Mar:

It's a process, but it's actually kind of fun, and it's not like any other Indian dish. Apparently, it's from Gujarat.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:02pm annie:

just copied it to my notepad. think i'll make it this weekend.. and the process is nothing, that's the best part, as far as i'm concerned

Thu. 1/14/10 1:04pm Scott:

Mark Williams, I'm so with you - easily one of my fave things from last year. There's some youtubery of some euro live sets, hope she makes it here. that cover. Wow.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:06pm J-Mar:

OK, one more cooking tip on the dhokla, and then I'll quit crowding the message board with gastronomic discourse: Indian recipes recommend that you use this Indian antacid called Eno (which would be in place of the baking soda), and they specify that when you stir it in, you should only stir in one direction.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:14pm Mark Williams:

Eno's an antacid? Ironic then how when you combine it with U2, I get heartburn...

Thu. 1/14/10 1:15pm annie:

well..... hhmmm.. i can do the asafadoeda, but i'm gonna have to stick with baking soda.. no eno, no no,

Thu. 1/14/10 1:17pm BSI:

U2?
...veddy nice. But vee need a plane for bombing, strafing, interception, ground support und reconnaissance... NOT CHUST A FAIR-WEATHER FIGHTER!

Thu. 1/14/10 1:22pm Looms:

Scott, this was a fascinating set.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:34pm Uli:

heres my recipe for steakummms

Thu. 1/14/10 1:43pm Charcutero:

Soldier Boy was fantastic.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:43pm Chris:

I'm waiting for it Uli.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:55pm BSI:

May I suggest the "beef zingers"?
http://www.steakumm.com/recipes.htm

Thu. 1/14/10 1:57pm fishmonkeystew:

Steakumms frighten me. But I've been inside the Steakumm factory, so that's understandable.

Thu. 1/14/10 1:59pm J-Mar:

I can't help but think that a chana dal factory has got to be a happier place.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:00pm Ike:

Was that the original version of "Never Turn Your Back On Mother Earth"? That sounded kind of wobbly and thin compared to the Neko Case rendition.

LOVE this scrambling of the bed music.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:02pm Uli:

you'll just have to come to my website and PAY !!! i'm not giving any of my recipes to you chumps for FREE!!!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:05pm dc pat:

If you're gonna eat steakumms you might as well eat fake meat.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:06pm Carmichael:

Captain Beyond. Hot Damn!!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:07pm J-Mar:

Exactly -- fake meat is so much tastier, besides

Thu. 1/14/10 2:10pm BSI:

Steak-Umms are the very PINNACLE of edible kitsch. Hell, I had to google it to see if it's hyphenated.... and felt sooooo dirty afterwards.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:11pm dc pat:

BSI: hilarious!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:13pm Mickeyyy:

thx 4 christine 23 onna-ing

Thu. 1/14/10 2:18pm Carmichael:

Shit, Blues Image. What did Captain Beyond do? Sufficiently Breathless?

I'm lost in the ozone again.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:21pm BSI:

No sweat, Carm., this'll bring you around:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xrMcV78SBwM

Thu. 1/14/10 2:25pm dc pat:

Kim's using a P bass with rotosound strings, I'll bet...

Thu. 1/14/10 2:27pm BSI:

slight Legendary Pink Dots vibe here... nice...

Thu. 1/14/10 2:30pm annie:

i hear the vitamin d calling me... see you all later!! thanks for the tunes scott!!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:33pm dc pat:

and I'll bet the bassist in the Sunsets is using a Hoffner, McCartney style bass.

Thu. 1/14/10 2:38pm dc pat:

this is cracking me up like a m*#f&!!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:40pm BSI:

holy crapping aardvark vortex!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:52pm Looms:

Scott plays Scott playing Jacques and they all make me happy!

Thu. 1/14/10 2:59pm TC:

Sockets in flight

Thu. 1/14/10 3:01pm Nat:

Thanks, Scott. That was a-a-a-awesome.

Thu. 1/14/10 3:02pm Scott:

Thanks Nat and everyone! Fun
