The only thing I remember about that documentary was the older jazz dudes dissing Ornette Coleman for Free Jazz. I thought that was pretty interesting. "How can you have Free Jazz?? Jazz is already free.."

Joe Lustig was a non-latino Palladium era mambo dancer. Great that the latin groups gave props to the dancers, no matter where they were from. Sadly I don't think any footage of his dancing survives. Would've loved to see his moves...

Great latin set! Funny lyrics too. The baseball playing horse can belt the home runs but won't run the bases. When asked why, he responds " If I could run, I'd be at the racetrack!" LOL

It would be nice, in view of recent events, to hear something from RAM, one of the premier bands of Haiti today. Named after the singer, Richard A Morse who runs Hotel Olofsson in Port au Prince. He and his family escaped unhurt, though "freaked out". I might have a cassette lying around of old sessions for the BBC. Couple of videos here for those interested: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWB4knbnEfg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlkeDcssZFE&feature=related

still b/p:
I'm sure there will be a celebrity-heavy concert broadcast for earthquake relief. Anybody heard of one developing yet? Speaking of celebrities...can I step on the soapbox? Took a fairly rare look at evening TV news and I found something distracting and offensive about Diane Sawyer & other network anchors putting themselves in the thick of the mess to be shown ("Here's me...here's more of me. 'I' will show you sad wretchedness & devastated humanity and how 'I' am encountering it.") wandering around on a self-indulgent misery tour, asking inane questions. Regardless of who decides on these marquee face insertions, it's essentially promotional -- at such a moment, ugh -- and it's resoundingly unnecessary in getting the reporting job done.

i agree bp; that stuff turns my stomach.. commercial teevee really is abysmal

have you ever seen the movie "ace in the hole" with kirk douglas - very much about that stuff - great movie.
|
Fri. 1/15/10 10:34am
listener rey:
@still/ bp I so agree. If the networks can get a camera crew and all the entourage it takes to keep someone like Ms.Sawyer looking fresh for TV, they can certainly bring along some medical help or at least some people to help look for survivors

it came our great carm, i am still using the meat from it.. we've so far made three separate international dishes from it.. the last being quesadillas. i use the broth in which it cooks for rice and the veggies on top of mashed potatoes...

A good entry point to Haiti musically: http://www.amazon.com/Rough-Guide-Music-Haiti/dp/B00005QXJT It's been a while since I played it, though. RAM is track 8. Annotated by Any Kershaw who's been there several times, staying at Hotel Olofsson.

Hey, all. Hopelessly swamped for some time now, but had to poke my head in and endorse the proposal for a call-in cooking show. I promise that I will participate in it if it happens.
|
Fri. 1/15/10 11:32am
J-Mar:
DC Pat, you totally have to let me know how that goes with the Philly cheese fakes. So how do we petition for a call-in cooking show, anyway? We know would call in -- but who would host it?
