A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

'running in place' became invaluable for my dj gig at free103point9 the other night. Thanks WFMU! I've spent 3+ hours listening to it and I'm only 1/5 of the way through side B! :)
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:16am jaypee:

Good morning, everyone. Stairway to Heaven is really quite pleasing this A.M...
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:18am dale:

  Thu. 11/19/09 9:19am Parq:

Is that Bethany "bells" CD great or what? Way-charming set so far, Miss T.
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:20am annie:

gaggle: murder: episode??
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:23am trouble:

dale, thrifting is a way of life, you just don't not do it anymore. or at least that is my credo
Thu. 11/19/09 9:24am north guinea hills:

Yes, the entirety of Bethany's "Bells..." premium is top notch!

oh, i go all the time, trouble. i stopped for a while when the vinyl at the salvay went from 5 for a dollar to 99 cents each, but i'm back now. i used to love the huge salvation army in hell's kitchen - that place was immense.

good afternoon to the thistles and good day to all time zones universe wide!
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:34am Stuart Troutman:

You're kidding....'Jailbreak'....makes me think of Tori Amos covering Cobain. But this is much weirder. Janis Ian sings Black Sabbath.
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:34am Brian:

Good morning. I'm so happy that 'FMU made its goal!

I listened to the archive of the Scharpling show - my God, what a party! Wish I'd been able to listen & pledge.

I told my husband that Patton Oswalt pledged a grand. My husband goes, "You are not Patton Oswalt. I hope you didn't pledge that much."
I didn't.

@Brian:
kicking against the prick(ers)
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:56am Cecile:

@dale, I don't as much as I used to - not so many things in my size, but I always hit the thrift stores in my hometown - I got a great Miami Vice blazer and a disco shirt for under $5.
  Thu. 11/19/09 9:59am annie:

the best rummage sale in my area is the one held at the presbyterian church twice a year; high quality stuff and cheap!!!i get all my linens there
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:02am dc pat:

this soul bro's tune rules, thanks troubs.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:04am Cecile:

they have some all-neighborhood ones. I went one year and got myself "The best of Delicious Vinyl" for a buck. I mean, the best of Tone Loc, Young MC, "Runnin" and "Mentirosa" for a buck!
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:04am dc pat:

I use to live at thrift stores until they started calling the clothes there "vintage". Now all the snooty types buy up all the good stuff and sell it for way too much. Ah, I miss the Goodwills of PA...
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:06am Brian:

@dc pat: That's when thrifting became spendthrifting.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:06am dale:

i guess the web has put a dent in thrifting for me too, as i troll craigslist all the time now. a while back i got an antique wallpaper hangers folding table for free. it just looks cool in the craft room and is handy to boot. although i did get a great old working telefunken shortwave radio at a salvay recently for $5.
Thu. 11/19/09 10:07am rb in scotland:

random odd infamous 'celeb' sighting yesterday at a midtown bar after work: Bernie Kerik, that bastard himself..., w/ 3 besuited large goons w/ matching staches.....
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:09am Cecile:

dc pat, on one hand, I agree.
On the other hand, they have some kind of curatorial karma that enables them to buy up some really unique pieces. I got some fantastic costume jewelry that way.

I'll pay a little more to not aggravate my allergies digging through the Valu Village...
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:09am dc pat:

man, about once every 5 years I'd go to the thrift stores and buy a great 70's leather jacket but now...foo! I can't find one I can afford!!
Thu. 11/19/09 10:09am Ghost of Ricky Medlock:

I used to listen to that mink stole song in college while walking the long walk from the cheap parking lot to class. Makes me think of hot jacksonville spring days.

The Icepack Groweth.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:10am Cecile:

Right now, my goal is to give thrift stores some nice fresh inventory. my little cottage is kinda cramped.

dcp, try stopping at every little town you drive thru. You never know!
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:10am annie:

the salvation army here treats everything like a rare antique and it's all overpriced.. waay much..
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:11am dc pat:

10-4 on that 'cile-- my wife can't go into Goodwills anymore because 10 minutes after we get there, she has to go to the bathroom. What's up with that?
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:12am Cecile:

What a coinky-dink-I just added the Pens' record to my shopping list for this weekend.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:16am annie:

Bernie's a newsmaking lawman/anti-lawman of national prominence, maybe about to land in the stripey hole.
Thu. 11/19/09 10:25am rb in scotland:

  Thu. 11/19/09 10:25am annie:

  Thu. 11/19/09 10:27am The Man:

Who says?
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:27am Parq:

The Junior Wells would have been a good one for Bethany's "bells" disc.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:29am Carmichael:

Thanks, Cecile. I'll catch up with all the fun later. When pigs fry ...
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:33am Cecile:

annie, I would be there if I weren't cooking a turkey the size of a VW.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:35am Reno Dakota:

Oh, Trouble, so you have a song named after you, too!
Thu. 11/19/09 10:37am north guinea hills:

Sorry, was busy w/ work. What Cecile said. Plus, W picked him for his 2nd term head of Homeland security until fraud, malfeasance, and tax evasion charges came to light...

his bodyguard entourage was scary.

I just wanted to go to a bar to see the last few minutes of the Ireland-France game.....
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:39am dc pat:

ah to HELL with the French. Anybody else bummed that Ireland is out of the world cup??
Thu. 11/19/09 10:41am north guinea hills:

I usually like Henry, but that was a WTF moment on par w/ Maradona's 'hand of god'.

I have both French and Irish blood in me, but I was mostly rooting for Ireland.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:42am Cecile:

No, dcp, I don't follow kickball that much.

*prepares to be pelted with beer bottles*:
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:50am Sven:

Man, that bass line sounded a lot like lovesong by the cure.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:50am dc pat:

ngh: what did Henry do? I haven't been able to catch up on what actually happened.

I have nothing against French folks....until they start picking on the Irish
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:52am suit:

the same dolly mixture?
http://agonyshorthand.blogspot.com/dollymixture1.jpg
Thu. 11/19/09 10:54am Adrian in London:

He handled the ball twice before knocking it to WIlliam Gallas who scored. Technically the referee should have spotted it, but didn;t. But Henryclaims he told the ref, who did nothing about it. Like much of football, the whole thing's rotten.
Thu. 11/19/09 10:54am north guinea hills:

In extra time, he (Henry) was offsides and handled the ball w/ his hand twice near the touchline to keep the ball in bounds and then squared it to Gallas who scored. That goal was the difference.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:54am em:

is anyone else having trouble with the streams? i can't get several of them to work.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:55am trouble:

yes that is the same dolly mixture
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:55am Cecile:

Adrian, it sounds like NBA playoff basketball - "no blood, no foul". The refs get very permissive with the calls...
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:55am tomasz.:

i can totally understand the Irish desire for a rematch. btw Hi Trouble! great show.
  Thu. 11/19/09 10:55am dc pat:

HOLY FUCK! I just saw the video!! Jezus H KEERIST!! Where the hell was the ref?? Goddammit we got screwed! Robo should be leading the Irish to SA.......I'm going to have to go get a cup of coffee...
Thu. 11/19/09 11:00am Adrian in London:

Yeah but lots of things in football even out. If the Irish had done the same thing they'd hardly be offering the french a rematch would they?

  Thu. 11/19/09 11:02am Cecile:

I love that video - Dylan with the ironed hair, and the melee in the middle.
It's amazing.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:04am suit:

that video is perfect.. and i love the photo of young dylan to the right of the page looking at the video as if to say "what the fuck...?"
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:05am Brian:

Love that wood thrush. (I think that's it ....)
Thu. 11/19/09 11:05am Adrian in London:

dc pat, try this, from the excellent Richard Williams: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2009/nov/19/thierry-henry-handball-france-ireland
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:05am Cecile:

Trouble, I hope he did a shout-out to you from the stage! That was an epic show.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:05am dc pat:

crap.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:07am Cecile:

damn! What is this?
This is Chicago soul in Portugese? Is this a new disc?
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:08am Carmichael:

That falsetto reminds me of Zappa's "Cruisin' With Ruben and the Jets".
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:09am dc pat:

Adrian: yeah that's pretty good. Henry's a douche.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:12am Carmichael:

God, I remember seeing this movie on IFC. The music drove me nuts. Itwas so jaunty compared to the on-screen mayhem.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:13am 55rpm:

Trouble, I recommend "The Informant!" OST. Marvin Hamlisch's ode to the late '60's Barry/Mancini/Hefti sound is right on the money. Happy B-day icepak.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:13am dc pat:

AND, I have to say, this doesn't do France an favors with their image around the world what with Zedan's head butt, etc...
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:16am Cecile:

I'll find out more about Cassiano soon enough, just ordered a used copy.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:17am HotRod:

nice...
Thu. 11/19/09 11:17am rb in scotland:

Oh, yeah...I need some Zappa. Might be time to dial up "Roxy and Eslewhere"
Thu. 11/19/09 11:20am Adrian in London:

But Pat, you know, it just doesn't matter. Football's just something that gives dull men something to talk about, otherwise they'd have nothing at all to say. The fact that i know about the Henry handball is just through osmosis. But for a great footie show, try to get the Danny Baker podcasts from BBC Radio 5 live. Absolutely inspired stuff.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:24am dc pat:

Yeah, I know--you and Noam Chomsky are right. I use to scoff at people that even mentioned sports. But now I'm more healthy than I've ever been because I'm inspired by things like the Tour de France, etc. I know I'm dull...
Thu. 11/19/09 11:27am rb in scotland:

"dessou les toits"? Roof underwear?
Thu. 11/19/09 11:27am Adrian in London:

God no, the Tour is fantastic. I've been to Paris three times to see the tour of the Champs. But that was before I realised what a nasty bully you know who was. Et mon Dieu Trouble, this Carmen Maria Vega track is great.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:28am Cecile:

Eh, I think sports can be good. It can be a healthy form of escapism. And if you decide to take up a sport because of it, great!
Thu. 11/19/09 11:28am Adrian in London:

I mean Tour on the Champs Elysees
Thu. 11/19/09 11:29am drunk right now:

Better to talk about sports than reality TV, right?
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:30am trs:

Hoogrey!
Is it too late to add colours to mix w/ the grey? Rusty and xanthophyllic autumns and maroons, wines, and burgundys.
Seeing fewer leaves and more sky,
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:32am Cecile:

Yeah, drunk.
But I have to say I am completely addicted to Tabatha's Salon Takeover. And My Fair Wedding.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:32am ?:

I like sport, just not football. And yes, drn, yes.
Thu. 11/19/09 11:35am north guinea hills:

Adrian, you sound a little too much like Guy Debord (whom I admire for the most part).

I find sports can be as poetic as anything else in life. But then again, Cage has rotted my brain to the point that the mundane and the fantastical have much of the same appeal to me.

what?
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:35am Cecile:

dude, severed heads.
I have to get the Aussie postpunk comp. It has my beloved Tactics on it.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:38am baio:

this track is fire. jesus lice
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:38am HotRod:

GREAT Severed Heads track!
Thu. 11/19/09 11:39am Adrian in London:

I've been compared to Noam Chomsky and Guy Debord in the last 20 minutes, and all I'm doing is spouting ill-thought-out crap on a web board. Think I'll have a nap…
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:40am dc pat:

you're having a good day Adrian. quit while you're ahead.
  Thu. 11/19/09 11:41am dc pat:

and the fact that any of us know Chomsky or Debord means we're not only sitting around watching sports.

Adrian, not only have you been compared to Noam Chomsky and Guy Debord today, you also get to take a NAP!

Your day is already infinitely better then mine.

Hausu is a most awesome low budget japanese horror film. I highly recommend it!.

Sounds good, Trouble. But I'm not going to toss over Jane Austen.

And Jane Austen has subtle references to the role money and economics play in romance. It might not be class struggle but it is there.

Love Mrs. Gaskell! It is so great. Have watched this with my daughter. It is a good break from watching Godzilla with son.
