Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

October 13, 2009: dedicated to Jim McIntyre, aka Jimmy Mack: a big part of why you listen to my show.

[photo: Jim McIntyre with his Mom at WBCN]
Three years ago I did my first WFMU show as part of the regular weekly schedule. I dedicated that show to my high school friend Jim McIntyre, who was also known as Jimmy Mack. Jim's passion for music - and radio, for that matter - was overpowering. He started working at Boston's WBCN, one of the top rock stations in the country, while still in high school and eventually became a key part of their Music department. He was as generous with his opinions on new bands he loved (Cheap Trick! The Dictators! The Motors! Ultravox! The Stranglers!) as he was with extra promo records that BCN had received, and I was a grateful and fortunate recipient of both.
By the age of 20, Jimmy was the Music Director at WBCN. Six years later, he was gone - the first AIDS victim who'd gone to my high school (but sadly not the last). But his influence during those formative high school years has stayed with me to this day, and the bands he introduced me to remain among my all-time favorites.
As I wrote three years ago, there have been countless times that I've wished Jim was still here so I could tell him about a great new record I'd heard, or he could tell me about his new favorites. I'm thankful that I can go on the radio every week and share my favorites with you - and if you like what you hear, take a moment to say "thanks" to Jimmy Mack for shaping my musical taste for a lifetime.
Not entirely coincidentally, this Sunday, Oct 18, is the 23rd (I think) 22nd annual Jimmy Mack March To Defeat AIDS, organized by the Martin Luther King Action Project at my old high school, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional HS in Sudbury Mass. (See more info here and here.)
I hope you'll consider making a donation to support this cause; checks (made out to MLKAP: Jimmy Mack March) can be mailed to:

Yes, a really sweet gesture. Judging from these first few songs, I'd have paid close attention to Jim's opinions too. (And happy WFMU-nniversary, EFD!)

Jessica:
What Laurie said. I'm going to see if I can't pull together some kind of gesture donation, just 'cause I can think of far too many high schools for which yours sets such a sterling example. In times as trying as these, locally, that sort of hope gets my investment. This is not the first show started off with 'Elo Kiddies,. in my experience. But that experience is just mine: I hit "play", on iTunes, marvelled at that awesome start, then went "hm" as the reset of the set was Cheap Triick on shuffle. /blonde

Long shot, but as you talk L. Cohen's "Memories" keeps jumping into my head.. could it jump into the set somewhere? (I'd play it here but I lack a copy of Death of a Ladies Man at the moment..)

It's impossible not to sing along to this, tho. It helps if [you're 11, and] skating at the latenight rink one suburb up the highway where everyone thinks you're exotic. And you're high on oregano.

EFD: Listener Pete here. I saw the Fresh & Onlys in Chicago a few weeks ago and they told me they will have a 2-CD record out on In The Red in January. They have over 90 songs to record! Pretty Amazing!

Michael: Apparently we're code-sourcing the next Dan Brown here. No, actually it's the Soul Junk album, which features Hebrew letters as part of its song titles.

Wed. 10/14/09 12:31am
Michael from the Left Coast:
I thought there was some reference perhaps to the old Jewish expression "Since the year gimel" which is slang for since the dawn of time.

Well, I'm pretty sure the original lyrics for Midnight at the O featured "put your gimel to bed," which leads in a wholly different direction.

Greeting all, Wonderful sets tonight efd (mos def!), I've been replacing blown fuses here. (Not your fault: I was using a space heater and popping corn at the same time. Which is apparently a no-no for my apartment's 1920s wiring...)
|
Wed. 10/14/09 1:19am
efd:
Thanks Sybil, good to hear from you! I've blown fuses trying to run two space heaters at once, but popping corn is a new one!

Jimmy Mack's younger brother here. Thanks, Evan, for the tribute and the memories. I also received a few of those promotional LPs which 'BCN had no need for! It's good to get a little taste of what my brother was up to way back then. Thanks.

Kathleen Moore:
It's great to see your tribute, Evan. It seems so unfair that Jim's not around to dive into contemporary culture with the Internet and social media to aid him. He would have LOVED this age of manic information swapping.
