Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - August 6, 2009

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

good morning world...

Thu. 8/6/09 9:04am From: north guinea hills

morning, i like the new ikue....

Thu. 8/6/09 9:09am From: annie

good morning trouble and everyone!!

Thu. 8/6/09 9:09am From: Joe Steele

My word, there are a lot of vowels in this song title and artist.

Thu. 8/6/09 9:14am From: north guinea hills

The Finns are the linguistic opposite of the Welsh when it comes to vowels.

Thu. 8/6/09 9:14am From: Joe Steele

I though they were saying "I Love Pizza"

Thu. 8/6/09 9:14am From: trouble

the finns love vowels. their scrabble games must have more vowels than the english set.

Thu. 8/6/09 9:22am From: north guinea hills

Who'd ever thought that Darla Recs would still be around 10 years ago?

Thu. 8/6/09 9:32am From: jeremy the listener

this francoise hardy track is..... amazing.

Thu. 8/6/09 9:38am From: jonathan

the way you said SOTOMAYORRRRR pleased me. also, what's maudlin about making history?! tuning in from wales here.

Thu. 8/6/09 9:48am From: trouble

you are right jonathan! we were all so overwhelmed with obama's victory, but this one feels more personal for me..

Thu. 8/6/09 10:04am From: Laurie

This Stevie Wonder song is creeping me out just a little bit.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:05am From: Laurie

Did I say a little? No, a lot.

And please, put down the harmonica. My cat ran out of the room. Cats hate the sound of the harmonica, it's true.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:13am From: Jennique

Trouble, thank you for counter balancing that scary, sloppy drunken Stevie Wonder song with this sexy, sassafrass chanson de satie.

Merci!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:13am From: north guinea hills

my roommates cats aren't phased by any of my sounds. I can play piercing sine wave tones, and the cats will still just stare at me plotting my demise (as always).

Thu. 8/6/09 10:20am From: Patrick

JIMMY PAGE!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:21am From: dc pat

man, you just cannot knock zep.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:21am From: GP

LOL, I see a trend starting.
Irwin played "Stairway to Heaven" yesterday at the close of his show.

Good Morning Trouble and world.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:23am From: patrick

Thu. 8/6/09 10:23am From: dc pat

Thu. 8/6/09 10:24am From: dc pat

I guess any speed is correct...especially w/ Meek

Thu. 8/6/09 10:25am From: trouble

GP led zep is not a trend, they are forever and ever

Thu. 8/6/09 10:25am From: trouble

Thu. 8/6/09 10:25am From: GP

Amen and 10-4 to that Trouble!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:28am From: patrick

Thu. 8/6/09 10:29am From: Trapper

TROUBLE IS ROCKING THE HOUSE!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:30am From: trouble

JC is dirty in political spirit and air quality today. dead possum on the sidewalk and junkies robbing cars, you know same old same old

Thu. 8/6/09 10:35am From: GP

Dub....is just what I needed to hear.
<gives finger gun and wink>

Thu. 8/6/09 10:35am From: Leslie

fellow listeners or busy DJ, I apologize, but would someone be so kind as to tell me what is the best way to listen live online? Realplayer? How do I get here from there. When my realplayer comes up, I have no idea how to get to wfmu. Or any other software suggestions? I'm on a PC. Tnx

Thu. 8/6/09 10:36am From: Trapper

Chilltown JC is IN THE ROCKING HOUSE!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:37am From: Trapper

Oh, maybe it's the hangover that's rocking my house.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:39am From: north guinea hills

Usually the RealAudio or Windowa Media Player et al links are the best way to access WFMU streams.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:40am From: GP

Leslie,
Try a program < google it>
Foobar 2000. Install it. It will actually work around a corporate firewall if you are behind one.
Once you get the program we can talk you through it.
DOn't know about how to use Realplayer...sorry

Thu. 8/6/09 10:40am From: brittani

what was the french blog u speak of?

Thu. 8/6/09 10:41am From: Rob W

Trouble and dear local listeners - speaking of Hudson County expeditions, have you heard that we now have a massive German / Belgian beer hall in JC?! Just don't drink too much before you go kayaking at the reservoir - that would be ill-advised. See: http://www.zeppelinhall.com/. It's the cousin of Radegast Hall in Brooklyn. Finally, JC has arrived!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:42am From: Patrick

well its not all oceans and sun i portland if that makes you feel any better. the bay is full of trash and sewage and the public transportation system is crumbling in the streets. we got plenty of street trash too... but on days like today, it all seems to fad away.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:45am From: Leslie

Thanks all. Maybe I'll try to figure it all later. I'll just listen to archives now - which I can figure out. Got to clean and tend to the children now. Sorry to be a bother!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:45am From: Trapper

Zeppelin Hall, far out! Not far from my little rocking apartment. Thanks, RW!
(Though I never wanted JC to 'arrive,' really...)

Thu. 8/6/09 10:47am From: gumby

JC arriving! I guess the atheists were wrong.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:48am From: trouble

i don't get what the big fuss is about this beer hall. It had a very college frat, fat security dudes in dark shirts vibe to me. sure it's nice to sit outside in the sun and have a beer but the visuals were so very limited. I'd rather have salmon and noodles at my fave vietnamese spot on newark

Thu. 8/6/09 10:49am From: stu

Hi Trouble and all my troubled friends ! Little OT at ork today, so I am just tuning in....Great info on the comments ...Finns love vowels and a Zeppelin beer hall in JC wow! Big news here today is the Madonna concert in Helsinki....her first time in Finland and she has got the Finns in a tizzy. We'll relax here in cozy Turku.....moi moi yall Stu

Thu. 8/6/09 10:50am From: Steve Bumgarner

Trouble, referring to Saigon Cafe or Nha Trang?

Thu. 8/6/09 10:51am From: Trapper

Thanks for the review, Trouble! That's sort of what I expected. How many listeners live in Chilltown I wonder!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:53am From: trouble

hey stu! congratulations on receiving the material girl!

Thu. 8/6/09 10:54am From: trouble

saigon cafe! i love that place, always great and lovely family run vibe

Thu. 8/6/09 10:57am From: sugarwolf

my friend had the durian shake at the saigon cafe once.

we have a new vietnamese restaurant near me, but they are only open for dinner.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:57am From: nasok

you can do no wrong, lady trouble. this song is perfect.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:58am From: Doug in DC

Thanks for the soul music, you got it goin on this morning.

Thu. 8/6/09 10:59am From: Stu

Ditto nasok ! perfect

Thu. 8/6/09 10:59am From: annie

Thu. 8/6/09 11:00am From: trouble

soul music is like breathing, you gotta have it all the time...

Thu. 8/6/09 11:15am From: Bertozzi

Thanks for the RI recommendations, Trouble! We ate nothing but grinders and Gray's. Sakonnet Purls had everything my knitting wife could want... Today's a great show for drawing along to--thanks!

Thu. 8/6/09 11:19am From: trouble

hey nick! so glad you had a great time! and glad to hear that sakonnet purls is still open, after the sign snafu. hope we get to see you when we are up there later this month...

Thu. 8/6/09 11:34am From: Laurie

This is my favorite Cure song.

Thu. 8/6/09 11:35am From: trouble

me too!

Thu. 8/6/09 11:43am From: GP

This Noisettes song is great, but then again I do like any vocalist that sounds sorta like Macy Gray.
Thanks Trouble.

Thu. 8/6/09 11:48am From: Laurie

I once had a nightmare that I made Will Oldham angry, and he turned into the Incredible Hulk. It was pretty scary.

Thu. 8/6/09 11:48am From: annie

are those chores on a pick it out of the hat rotation basis?? like every season you grab the chore out of the hat?

Thu. 8/6/09 11:49am From: Maria

Trouble, always a total joy! Bravo. I need to get that Callahan album.

Thu. 8/6/09 11:53am From: trouble

thanks maria!
annie, we sort of pick/are assigned. and since i have a washing machine at my house i get the washing towel duty

Thu. 8/6/09 11:54am From: GP

Beth Orton!

Morning Annie

re: Julia Child - she was 100% class

Thu. 8/6/09 11:57am From: annie

my favorite julia child story: she was at the national press club, speechifying. and her false teeth started to misbehave.. she just annouced it and asked if there was a dentist in the audience.. an old memory, loong ago..

Thu. 8/6/09 11:57am From: annie

hi GP..... :)

Thu. 8/6/09 12:03pm From: Sara

Laurie: have you ever heard Jeffrey Lewis' song Williamsburg Will Oldham Horror? Talk about scary...
