I can't wait for Robyn Hitchcock. He wrote one of my top five favorite songs ever, "Egyptian Cream."

Awesome opening set, Joe! My family was visiting my uncle in CA when the moon landing happened; I still have a vague recollection of watching it on TV.

Tue. 7/14/09 12:15pm
Carmichael:
In keeping with this theme Joe, could you play something from Stampfel/Weber's "Beer Cans on the Moon"?
|
Tue. 7/14/09 12:17pm

We were visiting my grandmother in Miami and my Dad drove us up to watch it.

Maybe not the right vibe, but definitely the right topic: Angst's Neil Armstrong. Love the Gil S-H, by the way.

Tue. 7/14/09 12:35pm
Rob W:
July 16 is indeed the correct Apollo 11 launch date, Joe. I share the space-age nostalgia, loved it all as a kid and although it's not really PC I hope we make it to Mars before you and I are pushing up daisies!

Edzo:
Maybe Robyn Hitchcock can play "The Moon Inside"

Tue. 7/14/09 12:42pm

paul:
This entire show is sheer lunacy so far. I remember the moon landing - a little. My parents sent me to bed they were listening to it on the radio, summer beachhouse no tv. I had to do that sneak-halfway down-the-stairs thing to hear it.
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:03pm
Rubble:
Paul, you made my day with your comment. :) Lunatic!
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:07pm
Parq:
Paul's comment sparks my own memory. I was in camp 40 years ago this week. A small back-and-white TV was set up in the rec hall, and for two hours, we sat there looking at the landing module and listening to chatter we didn't understand. We were sent to bed long before the Small Step took place. Incidently, I remember hearing news reports later the same summer, about this giant rock concert going on somewhere in upstate NY, closing the Thruway and attracting mud-soaked hordes. Oh, I spent that entire summer on the sidelines of history!

Tue. 7/14/09 1:09pm
History:
I'm kinda overrated, to be honest. I'm still around after all, and nobody's overawed.
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:11pm
dc pat:
man I was too little to remember any of that stuff. I do remember a Beatles live performance on tv in the late 60's at some point...I wonder if I imagined that. I love PRatRs!!!

Tue. 7/14/09 1:12pm
?:
DC Pat, they were televised performing 'all you need is love; in the late 60's ...
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:13pm
Carmichael:
Now I distinctly remember the Raiders on "Where the Action Is" every week. There was a VW bug that would pop a wheelie during the intro. Nothing in my youth was cooler.
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:13pm
AnAnonymousParty:
Well, History, if you'd quit repeating yourself, perhaps we'd pay more attention.
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:15pm
Carmichael:
Mr Sun, Mr. Moon was some cool hippie pop shit. And Joe, you're playing a lot of Goffin-King Brill Building songs. Super cool.

I thought what I saw was post-psychedelic but maybe it was All Ya Need Is Love and I'm remembering it wrong...

Raiders:
Huh, I just never get no respect! {adjusting tie knot nerviously}
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:19pm

Pat - another possibility: there was a widely played, and occasionally parodied, video of the Bs doing "Hey Jude", with McC on piano and John playing a sizable hollow-body.

Tue. 7/14/09 1:38pm
dc pat:
ok, never mind, my brother has no idea what I'm talking about. shit. I've been wondering about this for 40 years goddammit!! It was just a bum memory...

Tue. 7/14/09 1:40pm

Well, the only TV I can recall is the Ed Sullivan show (the later, color one) and some things on Dick Cavett or David Frost. Or maybe Mike Douglas.

Pat, at the risk of overkill (and of making it obvious that I'm bored at my desk right now), here's a still from the Hey Jude vid. Familiar? http://tinyurl.com/heydjvid

I know all you need is love was televised live- perhaps not here! Robyn sounds awesome!
|
Tue. 7/14/09 1:52pm
Parq:
Aha, Pat! I know that one. That was the so-called "One to One Concert" to benefit mental care reform after the Willowbrook scandal. The concert was in summer 1972 and a TV version aired that fall. I was there for both of two shows. The bill also included Sha Na Na, Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder. Here's a shot of Lennon and the Missus. http://tinyurl.com/lenn1972

Tue. 7/14/09 2:11pm

I really like that garage version of Rapposo's "Moon" but I'm always sorry they left out the bridge, with its thoughtful comment, "There's so many strange places that I'd like to be - but none of them permanently."
