So you like old crazy music, eh? Well, if I’m going to live here in your brain, I must do some housework. There are cobwebs all over the place in here. They must go. Very dusty too. Maybe if you laugh hard enough, it will all blow away and people will think you’re crazy. Feel free to talk back to me. I must keep you guessing and off balance. Please watch where you’re going…

Listen to this show: MP3 - 128K |

Artist Track Album Comments Year
Firesign Theatre  RALPH SPOILSPORT MOTORS   How Can You Be in Two Places at Once, When You're Not Anywhere at All  There's one group of people I am intensely jealous of and those are people who are hearing Firesign Theatre for the first time. No matter how many times I listen to them, I always hear something new. Do yourself a favor, go to Wikipedia, find Firesign Theatre and go down to the bottom for some high-powered web links.  1968
David Lindley & El Rayo X  MERCURY BLUES     One of the definitive car songs, written in 1949 by K. C. Douglas and Robert Geddins, it was originally titled "Mercury Boogie." It's been covered by Steve Miller, Dwight Yoakum, Meatloaf and many others and was bought out by Ford for use in a commercial. As for Lindley, he started out with the band Kaleidescope and is best known for his blistering steel guitar work for Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Warren Zevon and others. Why tell you when you can go to davidlindley, com and see for yourself? Impressive.
Oldsmobile  GOTTA GET A CAR     From some kind of promo thing for GMs Oldsmobile Division (RIP). I personally own a 1992 Oldsmobile 98. It's been a good old boat .. er, car.
Firesign Theatre  CAR HOOK   Roller Maidens from Outer Space  Phil Austin's solo project from (circa 1973), where everything happens in cars.
Tokens  MY CANDY APPLE VETTE     Formed in Brooklyn in 1955 (and featured Neil Sedaka, who left in 1957). This was a flip side of some forgotten single around 1962-63.

Music behind DJ:
Machito & his Afro-Cubans
DRAGNET MAMBO
Phil Austin  DUKE OF MADNESS MOTORS   Dear Friends
Screwball Productions  SANTA BOG     Mark Jonathan Davis (AKA Richard Cheese) and the Iceman (AKA Rob Izenberg)
Sensational Hot Rods  XMAS CADILLAC     From Thunder Bay, Ontario (300 miles above Duluth). Another one of those 50s tribute bands, only with a few originals to their vredit. Everybody's named Hot Rod (like with Blotto).
Vikings  FLAT TIRE     How many Vikings does it take to change a flat tire? One - unless it's a blowout, in which case the whole team blows up. Other than that, I got nothing.
Edd "Kookie" Byrnes  HOT ROD ROCK     Sounds like Connie Stevens here with him, but I can't be sure. Other than that, I really don't wanna talk about Kookie anymore.
Stevens & Grdnic  JOE BRACKNE
George Fenniman  JACK'S AUTO REPAIR   Prairie Home Companion  George was Groucho's sidekick on "You Bet Your Life" for 9 years. He was also the uncredited voice at the beginning of Dragnet ("This is the City ..."). Made his last appearence on the Simpsons in 1993 and died in 1997.
Frantics  CAR NOISES   Frantic Times  Mainstays on CBC radio in Ontario for many years.  1983
C W McCall  CLASSIFIED     Nom de CD of William Dale Fries Jr and is respopnsible for 'Convoy," "Wolfcrick Pass." and "Around the World with the Rubber Duck" before snapping out of it and becoming mayor of Ouray CO from 1986-92. Had an album in 2003 called "American Spirit" with Mannheim Steamroller.
Johnny Cash  ONE PIECE AT A TIME     One of Johnny's all-too-few light-hearted numbers (like "Egg Sucking Dog")
Phil Austin  NICK EXXON MOTORS   Roller Maidens from Outer Space
Billy Bob Joe Brown  HOLY WHEELS   KGOD  From an obscure Dabney Coleman movie (as far as I know, it never even made it to video) about a guy who buys a struggling TV station and tries to succeed with the Lord. Not all that bad and there were loads of sound bits I had the presence of mind to record.  1982?
Rodney Dangerfield  MY CAR     Another one I shouldn't get strted on right now. Born Jacob Cohen in Babylon LI, 11/22/21, got his big break doing a sub on the Sullivan Show. He was so big that in 1989, Europet made a line of dog toys using his likeness (sadly, to no avail). Go to Rodney.com and have fun.

Music behind DJ:
Chuito Valez & Orch a-Go-Go
DESCARGA
Proctor and Bergman  LEMON   What This Country Needs
Adam Sandler  ODE TO MY CAR   What the Hell Happened to Me?  Adam, more than practically anyone else, seems to inspire vehement feelings on both sides of the coin. You either love him or hate his guts. Count me as a fan. Sorry, this is the bleeped version, which seems to have a charm of its own. I'll get the real one for you as soon as I can.  1995
Billy Murray  FORD SONG     Also known as "the Little Old Ford Rambled Right Along"
Billy Murray  WE'RE THE SUNDAY DRIVERS     Yes, we're all Sunday Drivers now.
Len and Henry Spencer  RUBE ASKIN'S RIDE IN THE CYCLONE AUTO     Not that it matters, but the very first time I tuned in to the Dr Demento show, this was the first thing I heard. Weird I should remember this over 30 years later. I could not find anything on these two, though Len Spencer belonged to many of the singing quartets of the time.
Stevens & Grdnic  NO PARKING     A horror story that takes place in Montclair, NJ every Saturday night.
Star Ads  DAVIS MUFFLER SHOP
Bing Crosby  IN MY MERRY OLDMOBILE     My merry 92 Olds was one of the first models to have a computer on board monitoring things. As a result, it's always telling me my coolant is low and I should have changed my oil 200 miles ago. But I can change stations from my steering wheel, which drives my wife crazy.
Vaughn Monroe [Ziggy Talent]  WHY DID I TEACH MY GIRL TO DRIVE?     Ziggy Talent was born in Boston in 1912. He was a novelty singer and sax player with Vaughn Monroe's Orchestra whose clear crisp voice made him a standout in such songs as "Sam You Made the pants Too Long" or "Josephina, Please No Leana on the Bell." He had quite a loyal following for a non-crooner in the age of Crosby and Jolson.
Volkswagen  1963 ad

Music behind DJ:
Ernest Lamy & orch
TRAFFIC MAMBO
Riders in the Sky  STUDEBAKER CONESTOGA
Happiness Boys  HENRY'S MADE A LADY OUT OF LIZZIE     A reference to Henry Ford and his taming of the noisy, unreliable Tin Lizzie.
