Playlist for Irene Trudel - June 1, 2009

Mondays 3pm - 6pm on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Music floating on calmer seas is "netted" by my ears and released to the hungry listeners. It's a stringy catch, but frequently live and always delectable.

From YouTube poster to pop star hopeful, Zee Avi earned an album for her efforts. Zee Avi dropped by to play a few tunes live.

With a debut conjuring up another part of the world, Black Sea Hotel focuses on the angelic a capella traditions of Bulgarian women's choirs. The quartet melds a contemporary, other-worldly style with a reverence for this ancient tradition. Three members of Black Sea Hotel sang live and brought some traditional recordings to spin on WFMU.

So Zee is from Malaysia? Does she know of the Malay pop singer Bic Runga? What does Zee think of Bic? I used to listen to a bit of Bic back in the day.

Mon. 6/1/09 3:37pm From: favorite wfmu chat handle

"SpeeyPete" - hands down

Mon. 6/1/09 3:44pm From: SpeedyPete

Not bad with the Bic Runga reference huh?

Y'er welcome Irene.

Mon. 6/1/09 3:47pm From: Parq

I'm definitely hearing some jazzy phrasing in these last couple of songs, but I believe that playing "Name That Genre" is usually more limiting than illuminating. That's why my fave Itunes (sorry, Ike) tag is "Unclassifiable".

Mon. 6/1/09 3:54pm From: JCityJensen

Hey There? are there archives of the Primavera shows?

Mon. 6/1/09 3:54pm From: dc pat

what, Ike doesn't like iTunes? Hmm, iTunes and ill-used apostrophe's, what does that tell you about a guy?

Mon. 6/1/09 4:03pm From: Parq

Jens, as of last Friday night, the answer to that was no. Maybe things will change. Pat, I'll brooke no disparagement of our pal and the station's ur-volunteer.

Mon. 6/1/09 4:11pm From: dc pat

hey I'm not disparagin', just a friendly poke.

Mon. 6/1/09 4:15pm From: Sean Gostage
