So you like old crazy music, eh? Well, if I’m going to live here in your brain, I must do some housework. There are cobwebs all over the place in here. They must go. Very dusty too. Maybe if you laugh hard enough, it will all blow away and people will think you’re crazy. Feel free to talk back to me. I must keep you guessing and off balance. Please watch where you’re going…

June 2, 2009: Grab bag 5

Listen to this show: MP3 - 128K |

Artist Track Album Comments Year
Lothar and the Hand People  SPACE HYMN     Spoiler: Lothar was the Theramin. Formed in denver in 1965, one of the first bands to rely on electronics. Chas Chandler saw them and was wowed. Said "I'll be right back to make you superstars, but first I gotta go see some guy named Hendrix."  1968
Paulette Rae  REAL ESTATE IN FLORIDA     Couldn't find anything on her. Except a real estate agent in Seminole Florida. (?)
Happy Flowers  WHY CAN'T WE EAT THE BABY [Like My Gerbils Did]?     From Charlottesville, VA. Mr Anus (Charlie Kramer) and Mr Horribly Charred Infant (John Beers) channel childhood angst.
Jeremy Spencer  LINDA     Fleetwood Mac's original guitarist (along with Peter Green). Best known for his slide work, disappeared one night during a tour. Later turned up amongst the Children of God cult (now called Family International) where he remains today.  1970

Norman Temple, Genius  I HEAR HORSES     No info on this one, which is probably just as well.
Buoys  TIMOTHY     Buoys were one-hit wonders of this one written by a young Rupert Holmes, who knew Sceptor records would never promote the Buoys, so wrote this with the idea of having it banned, which would generate lots of publicity [Sceptor claimed Timothy was a horse]. Bingo! It got to #17 on the charts and refuses to die. Buoys later became Dakota and you can find a clip of them doing this song on YouTube
Charlie Drake  MY BOOMARANG WON'T COME BACK     Last single produced by George Martin before the Four Mops came to town. Drake was a British TV and stage star at the time.  1963
Chubby Checker  WABC TWIST     Station promo from the good old days when the Twist ruled the world and Chubby was its ambassador.
Continental Cousins  KANA KAPILA   Jungle Exotica  From Belgium, features brothers Andre and Guido vandeMeerschout, who were inspired by the Shadows. For a real trip, find this on YouTube.  1961
Playboys  MOPE DE MOPE   Big Itch Vol 4  Sorry, no info, but in my mind it's indelibly connected to Kana Kapila, and I don't have any idea why.
Elvin Boyd  I LOVE LARD     No info here either, but I'm gussing he's a really BIG star (pun intentional)
John and Ernest  SUPERFLY MEETS SHART     Written & Produced by Dickie Goodman, who started an epidemic with this kind of thing. The flip side is 2:45 of that annoying "Superfly-fly-fly-fly" thing at the end. We do this so you don't have to. You're welcome.
Albert Brooks  PARTY IN OUTER SPACE   A Star is Bought [got a Grammy nomination]  Albert was born Albert Lawrence Einstein in Brooklyn. His brother, Bob Einstein is comic Super Dave Osborne. Here he does a Dickie Goodman with an appearance by his then-girfriend Linda Ronstadt.
Tex Cameron  WHAT'S A COWBOY WITHOUT HIS HORSE?     Another one I can't explain.

Goons  YOU GOTTA GO OWW!     Goons were a British TV show, starring Peter Sellers, Spike Milligan and Harry Secombe (also Michael Bentine). Needless to say they were a big influence on Monte Python and an infinite number of other comics.
the Preacher  BRING ON DE HAM     Barnett 'Preacher' Henry hails from Pt Fortin, Trinidad, where he is considered a God. Began playing pans when he was a mere boy.
Harry Nillson  I'D RATHER BE DEAD [THAN WET MY BED]   Son of Schmillson [which contains its own commercial]  Features the Senior Citizens of the Stepney & Pinner Choir Club. Born in Brooklyn and died in 1994 while creating tracks for one last album. It was in his house that both Keith Moon and Mama Cass died (he sold it to Pete Townshend)
Cattle Prod  WHEN I'M DEAD     Less info than Tex Cameron
Me, Myself and I  IF I WAS A MAN     Be afraid. I mean REALLY afraid.
Tony Brower  MAKE A WISH [the WFMU Song]     I'm forever indebted to Tony [and as far as I know, we've never met] for including me in this list of WFMU deejays circa 1987. So much so that I've offered him my first born. Memo to Tony: Come pick him up already - he's starting to drive!
Jaime Brockett  TALKING GREEN BERET NEW SUPER YELLO HYDRAULIC BANANA TEENY BOPPER BLUES   Remember the Wind the Rain  From the same album as TITANIC, here he pays tribute to Robert Zimmerman.

Wild Bill Karpenko  WALKMAN HAZARDS     A cautionary tale for the iPod generation.
