Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - April 16, 2009

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Thu. 4/16/09 9:35am From: chris

Hey Trouble, have you heard/read this?: http://cdbaby.com/cd/rothenberg It is really neat! I know you are in the middle of a show and whatnot but obviously you are a fan of birdsong and the CD companion to this book is very cool.

Thu. 4/16/09 9:36am From: north guinea hills

i need to put a moratorium on supporting my local record stores so i can pay my taxes (i've been splurging a lot on vinyl lately anyways).

as for my record shopping, i never go in w/ pre-conceived notions of what i want, and i refuse to listen to any thing before i buy..... it works 90% of the time...

Thu. 4/16/09 9:36am From: trouble

thanks listener mark for pointing out my typo: i meant pastoral abandonment...

Thu. 4/16/09 9:36am From: jaypee

Oh, thank goodness, Trouble. I feel much better now. As do my ears.

Thu. 4/16/09 9:37am From: listener mark

oh trouble,
there are so many books in my house, I can't fit records. I do have CDs wedged in strategic places to prevent book slides.

Thu. 4/16/09 9:45am From: north guinea hills

my gf wants me to stop buying recs as i've run out of shelf space and my flat is already cluttered w/ piles of various media precarious stacked and wedged in various shelfs and under tables. i might have to make a sliding shelf system in the near future, since we all know i won't stop buying books or records...

Thu. 4/16/09 9:47am From: annie

good morning GWW. when is your show?? i am already dancing. have not been able to sit still!

Thu. 4/16/09 9:50am From: listener mark

Thu. 4/16/09 9:50am From: mouse

Thu. 4/16/09 9:51am From: annie

Thu. 4/16/09 9:52am From: dc pat

Thu. 4/16/09 10:13am From: Cecile

Let me know if you come up short, Trouble.
I might end up with more than one copy.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:13am From: listener mark

would've had it sooner but I was outside chasing the squirrel from the bird feeder

Thu. 4/16/09 10:16am From: listener mark

I've nothing against the squirrel, but two pairs of pileated woodpeckers feed there. The birds are protected by law. So you see it's a matter of legalities.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:16am From: squirrel

I will always win. Always.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:17am From: Cecile

wow, everything I've heard from Grouper is just lovely

Thu. 4/16/09 10:18am From: annie

Thu. 4/16/09 10:19am From: north guinea hills

Thu. 4/16/09 10:20am From: listener mark

Oh squirrel
I will fight you on the beaches.
I will fight you in the fields.
I will fight you in the towns and villages.
I will never surrender!

Thu. 4/16/09 10:22am From: jaypee

I don't know anyone who likes Burger King...no food snob here..I eat almost anything as long as it is not moving...but HATE Burger King.....their commercials don't help either.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:23am From: Scottish Terrier

Listener Mark, I approve of your message.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:24am From: jaypee

And here's a tip to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders: cayenne pepper powder. The hot stuff. Mix it in with the seed so that it's all covered with the powder. The birds don't notice the heat, but squirrels can't handle it. Caution: be careful when mixing! Inhaling pepper powder is like getting pepper sprayed.

So, step orf, you long-tailed rat.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:31am From: fishmonkeystew

Ah, squirrel talk. I've been slowly depleting the population in my neighborhood. Not that I really want to. I like squirrels, but their eating my garage and eyeballing my house. I tried to get a squirrel treaty signed, but they laughed in my face...

Thu. 4/16/09 10:31am From: annie

Thu. 4/16/09 10:31am From: still b/p

I intermittenly attempt to establish a cayenne pepper perimeter on the rail of my deck to protect plants from pitiless diggers -- wondering if the neighbors think there's some warlock bizness up when I do the sprinkle.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:32am From: north guinea hills

is this a relatively recent pharoah? who'd think i'd hear a terry riley piece and a pharoah sanders piece i've never heard before in the same show....

Thu. 4/16/09 10:33am From: annie

we have a collection of chipmunks here. not many squirrels, lots of rabbits, but the owls are having a feast.. gww. only two on vinyl

Thu. 4/16/09 10:33am From: still b/p

..and some -- squirrels, not warlocks -- have homesteaded in the eaves for years, but that's the landlord's challenge.

I once found a recipe for squirrel pie in a nice acorn flour crust.....I didn't try it.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:35am From: annie

we have mouse inside the walls of our house. and i think i watched a raccoon crawl down the back wall of the house, late at night and clumbering slowly.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:35am From: Scottish Terrier

four legs bad, lad? Ay, ye might need to rephrase that.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:36am From: annie

hhhmm acorn flour crust... i'll take possum though

Thu. 4/16/09 10:37am From: Cecile

Thu. 4/16/09 10:45am From: fishmonkeystew

mmmmm...Possum pie...

This year we bought 3 new bird feeders. The birds have been so loud that when we go for a walk down the street, you can hear a loud racket coming from my yard. All week we've had turkeys (1 tom and 2 hens) hanging out, too. Neato!

Thu. 4/16/09 10:46am From: dale

the hidden door is remarkably akin to the Persuaders theme by John Barry

Thu. 4/16/09 10:47am From: jaypee

This song reminds me of something that would be on the soundtrack for TheNeverEnding Story.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:48am From: annie

fms- the turkey up here are everywhere now and the fields are full of deer and young. i love watching the turkeys strut.. and gww. i am not close enough to a radio station to do shows anymore, i get my vicarious thrills listening to great djs on stations like this..

Thu. 4/16/09 10:50am From: listener mark

Sorry Scot Terrier.
Squirrel has me,... squirrelly.
This particular squirrel has eaten a lot of suet cake.
If I frighten it enough it might have a heart attack.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:51am From: fishmonkeystew

Annie-we've been seeing LOADS of turkeys up and down the street out here (N.E. CT). My wife and I counted 40 in one flock, all spread out across the road. They could care less if there's a car beeping its horn at them. Just take their time crossing. It's a hoot.

Well, I'm off to West Haven. I wish I could take you all with me. Laters.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:53am From: Scottish Terrier

Apology accepted, lad!

Ah, suet cake! suet pudding! That will put some fat on ye for the winter! I can't say I blame the bugger for swipin' that. But, yes, those fluff-tails are wee mangy bastards.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:53am From: listener mark

this dj mehdi is great I just pushed volume to 11

Thu. 4/16/09 10:54am From: Cecile

There are a couple of Tiger Sushi places here in MN. Completely strange, inauthenic sushi, but also extremely delicious.

And yes, LM, this has a great cruisin' deep house/movie theme going on.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:55am From: annie

mark, how did you find the book so fast?

Thu. 4/16/09 10:55am From: listener mark

annie,
I buy and sell books part time.

Thu. 4/16/09 10:58am From: annie

i'm impressed you found it so quickly. greatly appreciated. now i have to locate a copy..

Thu. 4/16/09 10:58am From: annie

pocket piano is great!

Thu. 4/16/09 11:04am From: dc pat

I hope the pocket piano dies a fiery, horrible death...

Thu. 4/16/09 11:04am From: Cecile

that film is very, very strange. I watched it completely straight.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:05am From: annie

what was the movie?

Thu. 4/16/09 11:06am From: dc pat

I like when they get all wet and foamy..

Thu. 4/16/09 11:06am From: Bill W

Hello, Mary Lou!

The Criterion DVD comes with the novel, which is a little mores traightforward.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:08am From: trouble

the movie is called The man who fell to earth by nicholas roeg. The "mary lou" character was a film invention, she was not connceted romantically to bowie's character in the novel...thankfully. yikes!

Thu. 4/16/09 11:09am From: Laurie

That His Name Is Alive member you mentioned... Is it the fellow who plays that weird accordion like thing? And he plays with Tara Jane O'Neil as well?

PS: There's a little red cardinal and his girlfriend hopping around in the angel's trumpet bush outside my window. My little calico cat is sitting in the window, watching.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:10am From: annie

oohh, i saw that loong ago, perhaps a revisit is in order..

Thu. 4/16/09 11:11am From: north guinea hills

i almost forgot how much i enjoy this show. i just procured the whole blood & fire recs back catalogue and have been listening to an album or three first thing in the morning at work the last 3 months. now i've finished blood & fire, i can enjoy no longer having trouble-free mornings (and other morning wfmu dj's).

Thu. 4/16/09 11:13am From: Cecile

I find with Nick Roeg movies that I am usually befuddled while watching them, but they resonate and haunt long after they've finished. Except for "Man" which was just silly, IMO.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:15am From: trouble

this film made "performance" look like a disney flick...very dark

Thu. 4/16/09 11:17am From: trouble

ngh: you can now work your way through the bullwackies catalog. there was an interesting article in monday or tuesday's times about the label

Thu. 4/16/09 11:19am From: 55ffrr

What was the Roeg film with Theresa Russell & Art Garfunkle? That one was odd as well.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:19am From: Cecile

walkabout is the one that really knocks me for a loop.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am From: Cecile

Track 29, never saw it, but I remember crap like that.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am From: annie

i could see that movie over and over cecile. jennie aggutter was great in that. have you read the book?

Thu. 4/16/09 11:20am From: north guinea hills

trouble, i do have a bit from wackies (the i dub ny kids throw me stuff every now and them), but i dearly need to take a break from all things dub for a few months. i will look up that article tonight, thought thanks! it would be nice to support what is now a local label, anyhoo.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:22am From: Cecile

No, was there a book? Gotta look that up!

Thu. 4/16/09 11:23am From: annie

there are explanations in the book for the boy's odd behavior.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:24am From: still b/p

I remember that a second or third viewing of the Man Who Fell to Earth lowers the frustration/bafflement factor of first viewing, because what's unclear matters less, and the elements that are entertaining can just be taken as they come.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am From: dc pat

if you don't like this oh sees song, then as far a I'm concerned, you've got spit for blood...

Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am From: Cecile

oh, ok.
I could kind of guess why.
I like that movie because it could SO not get made today. And it's like nothing else.

I miss the bittersweet/dark parts of 70s cinema quite a bit.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:25am From: annie

i'm gonna watch that tonight..

Thu. 4/16/09 11:26am From: Cecile

still b/p, I should probably give it another chance

dcp, i have coffee for blood, but love that song.

Thu. 4/16/09 11:26am From: annie

it all focusses on the concept of the walkabout for the young man but spills over into the girl's behavior as well. yeah i'm watching "man" tonight

Thu. 4/16/09 11:27am From: listener mark

trader joe's has a great fair trade organic bolivian blend that's great

Thu. 4/16/09 11:29am From: dc pat

speaking of walkabout, did you ever watch Walkabout?

Thu. 4/16/09 11:29am From: N by N again

Ya down with OBB?

Thu. 4/16/09 11:30am From: Cecile

I got a big can of that from my sister for Christmas.
Now I'm working on a lovely house blend from Twin Lakes Coffee in Twin Lakes, MI. The guy is a fanatic. and the place is located in the middle of nowhere.

Is there another Walkabout than the Walkabout we were talking about?

Thu. 4/16/09 11:31am From: Matt

Wow, I love the Mr. Scruff tune. It sounds very Kruder-and-Dorfmeister-ish
