A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

And here's a tip to keep squirrels out of your bird feeders: cayenne pepper powder. The hot stuff. Mix it in with the seed so that it's all covered with the powder. The birds don't notice the heat, but squirrels can't handle it. Caution: be careful when mixing! Inhaling pepper powder is like getting pepper sprayed.

Annie-we've been seeing LOADS of turkeys up and down the street out here (N.E. CT). My wife and I counted 40 in one flock, all spread out across the road. They could care less if there's a car beeping its horn at them. Just take their time crossing. It's a hoot.

Well, I'm off to West Haven. I wish I could take you all with me. Laters.

Apology accepted, lad!

Hello, Mary Lou!

The Criterion DVD comes with the novel, which is a little mores traightforward.
  11:08am
trouble:

the movie is called The man who fell to earth by nicholas roeg. The "mary lou" character was a film invention, she was not connceted romantically to bowie's character in the novel...thankfully. yikes!

Laurie:

That His Name Is Alive member you mentioned... Is it the fellow who plays that weird accordion like thing? And he plays with Tara Jane O'Neil as well?

PS: There's a little red cardinal and his girlfriend hopping around in the angel's trumpet bush outside my window. My little calico cat is sitting in the window, watching.

i almost forgot how much i enjoy this show. i just procured the whole blood & fire recs back catalogue and have been listening to an album or three first thing in the morning at work the last 3 months. now i've finished blood & fire, i can enjoy no longer having trouble-free mornings (and other morning wfmu dj's).
  11:13am
Cecile:

I find with Nick Roeg movies that I am usually befuddled while watching them, but they resonate and haunt long after they've finished. Except for "Man" which was just silly, IMO.
  11:15am
trouble:

this film made "performance" look like a disney flick...very dark
  11:17am

  11:20am
north guinea hills:

trouble, i do have a bit from wackies (the i dub ny kids throw me stuff every now and them), but i dearly need to take a break from all things dub for a few months. i will look up that article tonight, thought thanks! it would be nice to support what is now a local label, anyhoo.
  11:22am

there are explanations in the book for the boy's odd behavior.

I remember that a second or third viewing of the Man Who Fell to Earth lowers the frustration/bafflement factor of first viewing, because what's unclear matters less, and the elements that are entertaining can just be taken as they come.
