The suburbs were a product of the post-war economic boom, among other things. Cheap gas played a part as well. The pre-designed suburban development existed for many years, but took off in the early 50's.

Why is it worse to intern (and abuse) Japanese-Americans than it is to imprison (and probably torture) non-Americans?

Is it a greater crime to deprive an American of freedom? Are other people in the world "less free"?

Oh, to answer an earlier question, the word for an American who doesn't care about the rest of the world is not "Ameri-centric", it's "American"...
