Playlist for This Is the Modern World with Trouble - February 12, 2009

Thursdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Good morning trouble & all. Nice Blossom stuff. Pizzarelli & his wife have a cute radio show as well, 'radio deluxe'.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:10am From: Parq

Irwin will be pleased - he wanted to play "8" yesterday, but couldn't put his hand on it.

The arena hasn't had "Brendan Byrne" on the wall in a boatload of time, b/t/w.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:14am From: Stu

morning. I never knew blossom dearie was the figure 8 singer. that song seems so much deeper than mere multiplication

Thu. 2/12/09 9:31am From: Kevin in London

It's not raining... Love Vashti Bunyan, Diamond Day is lovely, and her voice is much the same on her latest album - the last 40 years have obviously been kind to her larynx.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:31am From: Mooose

Didn't BD also do the Adjectives song? Yes.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:38am From: 55ffrr

Thu. 2/12/09 9:41am From: tom

Are you sure this Kratwerk track is at the right speed?

Thu. 2/12/09 9:43am From: trouble

no tom, we are never sure of anything. but this is a cd so it is out of my hands...

Thu. 2/12/09 9:45am From: Ike

That version of "Ruckzuck" is wild. I could drive around the block naked to that a few times. Well, not really, but you know what I mean.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:45am From: Nakedfoul

It may be wrong, but it feels so right.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:49am From: David

Am I the only one who hears echoes of the "Figure 8 Song" from Schoolhouse Rock in Tom Waits' "Alice"?

Thu. 2/12/09 9:49am From: listener mark

Bit chilly to walk about sans pants

Thu. 2/12/09 9:54am From: Cecile

Speaking of no pants, Trouble, can you play something from Flight of the Conchords?

This Tinariwen makes me wish the whole floor could break out in spontaneous, yet meticulously synchronized boogying.

Thu. 2/12/09 9:57am From: trouble

Thu. 2/12/09 10:12am From: jaypee

Yay! Thanks for au revoir simone.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:13am From: PMD

Cool! Corndog day! Yummm... I should go join that too.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:13am From: Kevin in London

Mmm... you make me want to measure stars in the backyard with a calculator and a ruler, baby

Thu. 2/12/09 10:14am From: Cecile

Hugo, the clip for that song is a spot on parody of West End Girls.
I await their take on "Money"

Thu. 2/12/09 10:17am From: PMD

annie, I'll write on the corndog wall - still want to touch base with you about maple syrup! don't know how else to touch base with you.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:17am From: jon

this is fun. I wish I had an egg to follow along.

PMD- i am also the admin for "monsanto and it's ilk must be stopped"

Thu. 2/12/09 10:28am From: Ike

The Bird and the Bee... meeeeee-ow.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:29am From: dale

wfuv always ruins good songs for me. I liked the bird and the bee til they played it nonstop a couple of years ago. it's starting to sound fresh now. thank you wfmu for being eclectic (or having ADD, however you look at it).

Thu. 2/12/09 10:32am From: postmanpaul

trouble - grace slick's song 'manhole' is not heard on the radio often enough, is it not?

Thu. 2/12/09 10:32am From: Listener Dave from NH

New Psapp? Keen!
Also, a heck of a hooray for Caetano Veloso. I can't wait for summer so I can get to listening to "Livro" some more.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:32am From: Ike

Dale, that's how I feel about commercial classic rock stations with regards to certain rawwwwk staples. Except that the classic rock stations never rest any of it, so those 400-800 songs can never sound fresh again... they're ruined forever.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:34am From: dc pat

hey annie, I just befriended you...just a warning...

Thu. 2/12/09 10:35am From: annie

cool pat!!!

Thu. 2/12/09 10:35am From: SeanG

Trouble coming every day

Thu. 2/12/09 10:36am From: dc pat

Ike, Dale, but if you're stuck in a car somewhere, every once in awhile, they play a non-standard classic rawk tune which can make it all worthwhile.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:37am From: annie

trouble, joe has a bird-song record i sent to the station. i told him to give it to you, has he done that yet?

Thu. 2/12/09 10:39am From: Ike

Well, Pat, if you're in D.C., then FM is mind-bogglingly horrible, so I can sort of understand why you'd subject yourself to... actually, no, I can't understand it. They never play enough deep cuts to make the pain remotely worthwhile. I'd rather listen to static while futilely attempting to pick up WMUC or WRNR or WTMD.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:43am From: dc pat

You're right about DC radio--it blows hard, why do you think I'm here?-- but it's sort of a game: how long can I listen to songs I've heard 10000 times before they play one I've only heard 1000 times

Thu. 2/12/09 10:44am From: trouble

no annie. not yet. but i should just prompt him, perhaps...

Thu. 2/12/09 10:44am From: Cecile

trouble, you can catch chunks of the first eps on YouTube.

I have a funny story about this. i have had directTV for a zillion years, and I never get good deals like the new customers.

So I called them up. I said "I want free HBO for 3 months like the new people because I've been with you forever."

My call got lost in the depths of the system and I got transferred to someone else. I said "I want free HBO because the new people get it, and I want to see Flight of the Conchords."

Ten minutes later, I set my Tivo Season Pass to "stun".

Thu. 2/12/09 10:45am From: trouble

cecile, that is a touching story. sob sob. why can't i do that?

Thu. 2/12/09 10:45am From: annie

when i was working for the contracting company down there, the only station i heard from the radios of co-workers was that awful rock station that had howard stern. then came the greaseman. but i listend to amu in head phones the bluegrass was great..

Thu. 2/12/09 10:47am From: Cecile

maybe because you're one of those wonderful people with integrity who only get broadcast and round it out with Netflix? ;D

Thu. 2/12/09 10:48am From: chris

Ummm.. that was interesting.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:49am From: dc pat

yeah, AMU decided to dump the bluegrass for some reason...so it's kind of useless now.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:51am From: annie

i loved lee michael demspey... his show rocked. i moved away before they took the BG off. i also miss whfs... they were great! til they moved to annapolis.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:54am From: Cecile

it's such a sad story remembering all the free form and community stations that ended up being boring classic rock.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:56am From: annie

on the last day of HFS's broadcast the djays really let loose and broke a few rules. they were pissed..the music that day was amazing

Thu. 2/12/09 10:56am From: Cecile

now I got a boring meeting. Have fun!
Great show as always, Trouble.

Thu. 2/12/09 10:57am From: Cecile

I can imagine, Annie.
I heard similar things happened the day Ann Arbor's last commercial freeform station made the switch, too

Thu. 2/12/09 10:58am From: dale

people pay for television? funny, in this economy you'd think that might be the first thing to go (after the starbucks, of course). on top of the rooftop antenna we have blockbuster, but they have really cut down the # of movies and free exchanges we get in our plan. still cheaper than cable. besides, have you ever seen the 400 blows or fitzcarraldo on cable?

Thu. 2/12/09 11:03am From: 55ffrr

Herzog has been absent from most cable stations, but 400 blows was just shown on tcm last month.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:03am From: Civil Joe

I kept the cable, and the Starbucks for that matter (just black coffee, no fancy latte this or that) The first thing to go was the landline phone.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:07am From: Kevin in London

Dale, I have satellite TV - 600 channels and nothing to watch. Fondly remember when I was a kid in the '70s, when we had 3 channels and a black & white TV - those were the days...

Thu. 2/12/09 11:07am From: jamesie

nice eccles... Effric is coming back from Barbados in an hour after a horrible week.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:09am From: postmanpaul

hi annie, does the bird-song record include the curlew? they sound so cool and eerie-ish; theirs is my estuary mud-flats bird-song of choice as the sun sets behind the anchored wooden hulk on-which the story of the 'heart of darkness' begins to unfold.
and curlew was the name of my rowing club in greenwich london :)

Thu. 2/12/09 11:10am From: dc pat

when I was a kid, we received channel 29 fro Philly over antenna, so it was 3 Stooges, Batman, and Japanese monster shows EVERY afternoon.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:10am From: dale

we need the fax old tech (fax machine, unfortunately) so the landline has to stay. kevin, I had a free-to-air mpeg sat reciever set up until a lightening strike took out the reciever, but I got a couple hundred channels of arab, german, indian and asian television. I saw a lot of movies on it, dubbed but with english subtitles. China Central Televsion was a great network, a lot of english language documentaries about China.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:11am From: Sean Daily

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!

Thu. 2/12/09 11:11am From: annie

PMP- i am not really sure, i listened to it years ago. trouble can tell you once she wrests it from joe's cold dead hands..

Thu. 2/12/09 11:12am From: dale

dc pat: Ultra Man in the afternoon, Godzilla and Gammara at night?

Thu. 2/12/09 11:14am From: annie

we were lucky enough to live in long island with the great television from the city.. little rascals were regulars on our list and(when our parents weren't looking) the wretling. all thos ekids shows too... i have found alot of them on youtube now..

Thu. 2/12/09 11:19am From: dc pat

Ultra Man, Johnny Socko, and Space Giants which was by far the best. I think these shows had a huge effect on my social development...as did the stooges (both stooges).

Thu. 2/12/09 11:20am From: vivian

Is Karen Dalton covering a Neil Young song?

Thu. 2/12/09 11:20am From: jamesie

I loved the Grand Ole Oprey coming out of Athens airport by courtesty of the American Forces Radio and Television Service every Saturday night at 8pm during the time of the fascist Greek Colonels regime in 1967. The US 6th fleet hung around to help the Israeli Jets get spare parts while they pounded the other lot. Great radio though!

Thu. 2/12/09 11:20am From: trouble

paul, i am putting you in charge of getting us some curlew sounds!

Thu. 2/12/09 11:20am From: fishmonkeystew

Howdy all! Nice set list yet again, Trouble. Thanks!

Thu. 2/12/09 11:21am From: annie

and i would lie in bed at night with my beloved transistor radio, listening to stations from all over the country.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:24am From: postmanpaul

trouble, cool, but failing that i'll post a brace of 'em to you.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:25am From: dc pat

ah, a brace, meaning two. We covered that about a month ago...

Thu. 2/12/09 11:28am From: dale

my first purchase ever was a GE transitor radio (got the emergency band, too). I would listen to it at night with a radio Shack pillow speaker and imagine what Chicago or Pittsburgh looked like.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:28am From: trouble

great!

Thu. 2/12/09 11:29am From: annie

trouble- you should ask joe about that record.. i told him it had your name on it..

Thu. 2/12/09 11:40am From: listener mark

Trouble, I tried the risotto recipe. I need more practice. It turned thick, well sort of solid.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:43am From: trouble

listener mark, you need to add more stock and not let it cook down so much...keep testing it so see if the rice is done, not soft but still with a little tooth to it.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:44am From: listener mark

Thank You

Thu. 2/12/09 11:45am From: postmanpaul

fu..ing hell, the orig 'heart of darkness' really should be filmed. i for one am looking forward to the bit where the cannibals 'manning' the engine room lose their hippopotamus.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:47am From: PMD

dc pat, I think AMU has an HD channel that they play bluegrass on... but yes, does suck that it's gone.

Thu. 2/12/09 11:55am From: chris

what a great show

Thu. 2/12/09 11:56am From: trouble

thanks everybody for chiming in, cheers.
