Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - January 27, 2009

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

January 27, 2009: the soothing sounds of the rain, with THOMAS FUNCTION live!!
Trying to describe Thomas Function's music is like trying to describe the colors of a kaleidoscope. Flummoxed music writers tend to use genre descriptors like "garage," "blues," "psych," "bluegrass," "glam" and "country." They throw around band names like the Buzzcocks, Television, Violent Femmes and the Modern Lovers. Well, they're all right. Listen to this live set and it will make perfect sense. Plus, you'll understand why I named their Celebration CD my Best Of 2008.

Listener comments!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:08pm From: Laurie

The comic book shoppe I used to visit every Wednesday played nothing but the Buzzcocks pretty much, so I got pretty tired of them eventually. This song? It's hot! I like it!

PS: Got any spoilers for The Love of Ray J??????

Tue. 1/27/09 11:08pm From: Jan Coztás

This is a great song. I need to dig out the buzzcocks records again.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:09pm From: cheri

Tue. 1/27/09 11:17pm From: gregory

I was at the other music in store friday night and I'm excited for the set tonight

Tue. 1/27/09 11:18pm From: efd

hi everyone! going a little crazy in the studio at the moment... you'd think a 7-minute opening song would give me time to catch my breath, but apparently not.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:19pm From: john

Take your time; we'll hang.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:21pm From: dw

Yea, i was there and the Cakeshop show.. really good stuff. Was tempted to go to the Mercury Lounge show too.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:21pm From: Laurie

I guess you could say... I was conditioned to NEVERM(IND THE BUZZCOCKS. http://tinyurl.com/2d3gev

Simon Amstell is my favorite British Simon.

Also!! Grifters! I was just listening to Full Blown Possession and Crappin' You Negative a couple of weeks ago.

And I like this Reivers song! I haven't really listened to them before and have something new (or old, I guess) to look into!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:21pm From: efd

well I know Cheri gets antsy when I don't answer right away...

Tue. 1/27/09 11:22pm From: Laurie

Sorry, I don't know why I typed an open parentheses in "NEVERMIND."

Tue. 1/27/09 11:24pm From: cheri

evan i sometimes do get antsy,, but not always,,,,=)

Tue. 1/27/09 11:24pm From: Joe

Whoa, is Bill Kelly filling in tonight?

Tue. 1/27/09 11:24pm From: Laurie

Possibly because it should really be "NEVER MIND."

Okay, I'll stop commenting!!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:27pm From: efd

Laurie, I think it was because the I is near the 9/( key.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:31pm From: cheri

btw evan i bet you'll be watching the superbowl, i'm i rite??

Tue. 1/27/09 11:33pm From: john

Thomas Function reminds me of a southern-fried James. Which is a compliment. And the Buckinghams were super cool, much more than just "Kind Of A Drag."

Tue. 1/27/09 11:35pm From: E.L.

Oh! Just in time.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:38pm From: efd

hi, E.L., John, Joe, and everyone!
Cheri, you are right - I will be watching the Superbowl.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:42pm From: cheri

it's a great set,, efd you're THE BEST dee jay on fmu!!!!!!!! i swear.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:43pm From: Laurie

Evan, for shame. You should be watching the PUPPY BOWL. (I hope they continue with the kitty cat halftime show tradition!)

Tue. 1/27/09 11:43pm From: efd

Laurie, who says I can't watch both??

Tue. 1/27/09 11:48pm From: cheri

efd--i asure you that THIS will be my ultimate final comment for the nite,,,but i'll still be listenin,g'nite

Tue. 1/27/09 11:49pm From: efd

OK, Cheri! thanks for the kind words, as always.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:52pm From: Jan Coztás

I like this Thomas Function concoction. I never heard of them before. Many thanks for putting this on the air!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:54pm From: efd

cool, glad you're enjoying it Jan!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:55pm From: Laurie

I think I'm sending too many tweets today!

Tue. 1/27/09 11:57pm From: E.L.

I wish I could be blasting this but there are sleeping individuals in the next room. Thomas Function sound particularly victorious after a long day.

Tue. 1/27/09 11:57pm From: Jessica

Woooo!
[hooray for Twittereminding. oof. still: it worked. @JessicaD. (Laurie?)}

Tue. 1/27/09 11:58pm From: efd

note to self: close the Studio B door before interviewing the band next time.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:00am From: Laurie

@LaurieFromMiami

Matt Fraction just @replied to me, and I gained FIVE followers. Well, one of them was Matt himself, but he's a KINGMAKER.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:02am From: Joe

That set was tasty as hell.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:14am From: efd

glad you enjoyed it, Joe!

Wed. 1/28/09 12:20am From: Shjip

So, how would you say my name?

Wed. 1/28/09 12:23am From: efd

I would say it rhymes with "potjato chjip"

Wed. 1/28/09 12:26am From: Laurie

I like this Wolfgang Press song for the most part, but I really hate that Happy Mondays melisma-y back up singer thing. I think Primal Scream also did it for an album in the early or mid-nineties as well?

Wed. 1/28/09 12:27am From: H20

jrip...jrip

Wed. 1/28/09 12:28am From: Joe

The "J" is silent. It's spanish.

Laurie I was thinking the same thing but I don't know what album it is, either.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:31am From: efd

I don't know if the "j" is really silent in Spanish... what about Tijuana?
On the other hand, I had to look up "melisma," so what do I know...

Wed. 1/28/09 12:32am From: Laurie

Love Colossal Yes, love Mr. Newman. As usual, you're playing all of the hits. (I'm using Michael Shelley's loosely-defined interpretation of "hits.")

Wed. 1/28/09 12:34am From: Laurie

And I should have used melismatic instead of melisma-y apparently. Go fig.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:37am From: efd

here's another hit, Laurie.

Wed. 1/28/09 12:37am From: Laurie

YESSSSSSSSS. I love the Pains. I call them the Pains. Because, you know, their band name is kind of a mouthful.

I'm commenting too much, as usual! My apologies, I'll shut up now and lay off the Diet Coke w/ lime (no vodka!)!!

Wed. 1/28/09 12:43am From: Joe

You gonna send this one out to yourself, Mr. Davies?

Wed. 1/28/09 12:44am From: profstevesteve

Hey it keeps the rest of us going, Laurie! BTW during B. Jam's show a couple back it really was a bright purple sky over Syracuse. The beauties of the wonderfully tainted Onondaga Lake we call our shores..!

Wed. 1/28/09 12:44am From: The Log Lady

Wow, I didn't know the Popguns covered 10,000 Maniacs--interesting!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:06am From: efd

ZOMG itz SNOWING!!!!1!! everybody run for your lives!!!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:09am From: john

Wolfgang Press, Thomas Function, El Goodo...it's a night for bands that sound like relatively improbable names of people. No snow yet in the Nutmeg State (TM).

Wed. 1/28/09 1:09am From: poof

gone.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:11am From: Joe

keeping my fingers crossed for an 8:30 class cancellation...

I might have to nickname someone "El Goodo" in the coming week... its too good not to use.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:12am From: efd

"mr. groovy" wouldn't be bad either.
I'll be rooting for that cancellation for you!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:13am From: Laurie

I'm assuming El Goodo got their name from "The Ballad of El Goodo," no?

Wed. 1/28/09 1:13am From: efd

poof: Goodnight, Mr. Chjips.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:19am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Laurie--is there any other El Goodo?

Wed. 1/28/09 1:20am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Sutherland Bros and Quiver are British I believe
I believe Pete Thomas of the Attractions was their drummer

Wed. 1/28/09 1:22am From: john

El Goodo are/is Welsh. Agreed on the name; original ideas a little thin on the ground there. Sutherland Bros etc were Brits but had at least one Canadian in the band.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:23am From: Joe

This is great because
A; It's really fun and
B. It probably pisses Mike Patton the hell off.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:24am From: efd

thanks Michael and John for the info. Mike Baird is the drummer credited on the LP I have, but I believe they had a couple of others at least.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:27am From: john

98% of what I know about them comes from, of all reasons, the fact that Tim Renwick played guitar on a bunch of Al Stewart records in the 70s.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:29am From: efd

this "Ganesh is Fresh" might be the best song ever (right at this moment, at least).

Wed. 1/28/09 1:29am From: Joe

Wow.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:29am From: Joe

Of the decade, maybe. It's 2009, after all.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:29am From: Laurie

Okay, I'm off to bed before I send any more tweets pouting about how two fellows I liked stopped following me. It's like I feel compelled to confirm their reasons for dropping me from their twitter feed!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:35am From: efd

aww.. goodnight, Laurie! you'll never be dropped from the playlist comments.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:36am From: john

Wow, i'd forgotten how unutterably brilliant this Jah Wobble record was, despite the whole Sinead O'Connor thing.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:40am From: efd

honestly I don't recall the rest of the CD at this point, but I had to bust it out when I heard the similar bassline in "Ganesh is Fresh" (!)

Wed. 1/28/09 1:40am From: Michael from the Left Coast

EFD--Mike Baird was the last drummer in Journey (when it was still Steve Perry fronting the band) when Randy Jackson was the bass player. Baird is/was a big session guy

Wed. 1/28/09 1:44am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Good Yogi reference there!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:45am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Ba da Cymbal crash!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:46am From: efd

two for the price of one!

Wed. 1/28/09 1:46am From: john

MC Yogi would like to thank you for making this day necessary. Hard to believe it's nearly two, it gets late early here.

Wed. 1/28/09 1:48am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Do you know where the FMU show will be at SXSW (do you have the venue name?)?
Will you be there?

Wed. 1/28/09 1:48am From: Joe

I just hope he's rocks with Dj BooBoo

Wed. 1/28/09 1:52am From: efd

nicely played, John and Joe.

Michael, the name's not handy - there was a note on that Obits single, but didn't mention the venue. I will not be in attendance, unfortunately.

Wed. 1/28/09 2:00am From: john

Thanks, couldn't let the week pass without a single baseball reference, so when I came to a fork in the road, I took it.

Wed. 1/28/09 2:12am From: Joe

Hilltop Nissan! FUCK! Too late...

Oh well, only the Jersey folks would've gotten it anyway...

Mon. 2/9/09 12:21pm From: greg

hey man, thanks for playing our single!
