  Wed. 1/21/09 9:06am Ghengis Jung:

Does Larry follow politics?
  Wed. 1/21/09 9:06am Cecile:

  Wed. 1/21/09 9:12am Vicki:

Do you have any photos Ken? Of the inauguration, not the FCC HQ

love that tale -Ken taking the FCC application to Washington on
Inauguration day. That is one for the history book of WFMU, when it is finally written. When is that book going to be written, anyway? That would be a good premium during the fund raising

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:02am Otis:

I stopped work just to pop on to say gawd bless you for the Elakelaiset. Finnish humppa increases my productivity tri-fold. Elakeliaset could very well be our new savior reborn.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:03am Ken:

Yes folks, listen to Otis! The REAL news today is that there's a NEW Elakelaiset record! Thank you, John from Oslo!!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:05am Nestorg:

It's so hilarious to hear Finnish humppa from a NY radio station!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:07am Otis:

John from Oslo is to blame for turning me on to the power that is Elakelaiset years ago. I think John has a Finnish Hummpa stand when you get off of the PATH on route to the station. Just listen for the humppa and let it do it's work.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:09am Cecile:

Now i want some hummpa metal.
Like KORPIKLAANI.

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:10am annie:

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:10am Nestorg:

Once Eläkeläiset played a gig in Germany. They were asked not to mention Nazis, Gays and Hitler. They started their gig by shouting: "How are all you fucking gay nazi Hitlers!" And the crowd was in extasy.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:11am Otis:

Nestorg - ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Cecile - Yes, I second your emotion! Mo Humppa Ken See Voo Plate?
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:11am paulthepostman:

Hi Ken and cityslickers. Sorry, but I never had a problem with Bush, apart from the seeds poppin' now and again.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:12am Cecile:

That's awesome, Nestorg. I love that!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:15am Ken:

Oh man, we've got to bring Elakelaiset to NYC!
Wed. 1/21/09 10:17am Wendy del Formaggio:

Ken, I agree. Can't we convince them to do some sort of FMU thing? I bet they'd love them in Damrosch Park!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:19am Lizardner Dave:

Bring Hummppaa to the USA! Bring Hummppaa to the USA!
Wed. 1/21/09 10:20am John from Oslo:

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:43am jan:

oh this "Most Unwanted Song" is great to hear on your show. I actually
bought this CD years ago, and maybe listened once. Turns out it's not the greatest thing to sit down and listen to on the HiFi. But on the radio-
great. Thanks for reminding us.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:43am Vicki:

you know this song was introduced to me by Mike Howes at KZSU about 8 years ago, and he said "this is called The Most Unwanted Song and er... it... sounds like YOU"
Wed. 1/21/09 10:44am Tristram in Brooklyn:

I liked it when Ken was singing better..

AC/DC - it's a long way to the top.
Great bagpipe song
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:47am Vicki:

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:48am GP:

Thx Vicki
Wed. 1/21/09 10:48am Listener James from Westwood:

Whoa, massive FMU flashbacks. I first heard this cut on FMU on the drive to the East Orange station location on one of my first volunteer runs, can't remember which. I know the 1st time I came down, Andy Waltzer was hosting Kristen Hirsch, but I distinctly remember hearing this while on the Parkway looking for the right exit . . .
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:48am Carmichael:

Good day, everyone. Wonderful tune-age thus far, Ken.

Favorite Bagpipe song: "Snow On the Hills". Good luck finding it. Tannahill Weaver's "The Log Splitter Set" is much more, uh, *accessible* ....
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:48am detroitdave:

  Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am Carmichael:

GP, try the kung pao haggis.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am Will:

Ken,

Favourite bagpipe song? That would have to be the concerto for bagpipe and gamelan by I.M. Harjito.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am fatty jubbo:

I like screechy irritating sounds, but I have never been able to find a love for bagpipes...except on St. Patriick's day when an unexpected bagpipe parade comes stumbling down the street.
Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am Wendy del Formaggio:

UbuWeb's entry for this song says, "Fewer than 200 individuals of the world's total population will enjoy this." Are all 199 of us commenting on Ken's playlist at this very moment? haha.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am Cecile:

and the bangers and moo goo gai pan
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am Dickdong:

And where's the Jew's Harp on this unwanted song?
Wed. 1/21/09 10:52am John from Oslo:

In my book, the most unwanted song is "Hello" by Lionel Richie, and possible also "Dancing on the Ceiling" no bagpipe alas...
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:53am Ken Marks:

Needs sitar!
Wed. 1/21/09 10:53am Tristram in Brooklyn:

Unlike incandescent light bulbs, which illuminate regardless of the electrical polarity, LEDs will only light with correct electrical polarity. When the voltage across the p-n junction is in the correct direction, a significant current flows and the device is said to be forward-biased. If the voltage is of the wrong polarity, the device is said to be reverse biased, very little current flows, and no light is emitted. LEDs can be operated on an alternating current voltage, but they will only light with positive voltage, causing the LED to turn on and off at the frequency of the AC supply.
Wed. 1/21/09 10:53am Listener Dave from NH:

This is pretty bananas and possibly even further out there than his stuffs with the Thai elephant orchestra.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:54am fishmonkeystew:

Actually, for me the most unwanted song is "Paradise by the Dashboard Light" by Meatloaf. Evil, pure and simple.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:55am Lizardner Dave:

The only thing that could make this better is a little David Lee Roth and some train whistle....
Wed. 1/21/09 10:55am John from Oslo:

You said it Dave!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:56am Cecile:

fishmonkey, that and "sometimes when we touch" Dan Hill. Or any Dr. Hook ballad...
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:56am Ken:

How about bagpipe tunes I can find? There are NO songs tagged with "bagpipe" in out entire MP3 library. Actually, there is one, but it doesn't have ANY BAGPIPES!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:56am annie:

FMS- yeah, this is absolutely tolerable compared to meatloaf
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:56am owen:

surely the worlds most unwanted song should contained a nu-metal dj.
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:56am Stuart:

Oh, Pak Harjito's famous bagpipe piece. I play in a gamelan he directs, have played that piece. It's not soothing. Am taking the liberty of reposting will's comment to the gamelan's internal mailing list, though (which Pak Harjito reads).
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:57am detroitdave:

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO KEN?? I think the station has been taken over by some mutant bagpipe carrying phenomena. We gotta call somebody!
  Wed. 1/21/09 10:57am Otis:

There is no excuse for Meatloaf. Unless of course, if Dave Soldier covered Meatloaf.

  Wed. 1/21/09 11:01am Otis:

I'd love to hear Kenny G play the most unwanted song at 1/16 the speed of the normal version to fill his 3 hour show.

  Wed. 1/21/09 11:03am Otis:

Yea! Rufus Harley's Bagpipe Blues!
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:03am Vicki:

I bought some kids bagpipes on ebay and nearly died trying to play them. so I gave them to Ergo Phizmiz and he nearly died and then we saw the little blowy reed thing was on the floor. after 10 more minutes of blowing into the little tartan bag Ergo made a goose noise.

KEN...KEN... look at me.. how many fingers am I holding up? ..........You OK?? Call the music police quick........no pulse!!

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams) by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (Love Their Country), starts off with a bagpipe!

Vicki,
That is a hilarious image you have created there with that anecdote.
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:06am fatty jubbo:

I would rather listen to a gaggle of geese all day than goddamn bagpipes.

Yes, but unlike an incandescent bulb, which has minimal resistance when the filament is cold that increases as it heats, in a forward biased LED, once you exceed a certain threshold voltage the internal resistance becomes such that if not limited by an external resistor the diode will consume enough current to destroy itself, so you have to be careful. Knowing the applied voltage and the LED's voltage drop, it's an easy calculation using Ohm's law to find a resistance value to keep the current at a safe level, typically 20-50 mA.

What's all this lightbulb business? Did I miss something?

  Wed. 1/21/09 11:09am Sean Daily:

Not even close to first comment! Woo hoo!
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:09am Vicki:

you know The Most Unwanted Song also exists as a LIVE show. Imagine that.

By the way, Pipes of Peace by Paul McCartney has no bagpipes and it is also shite.
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:10am Mark:

I believe I'm ready to rock and ready to roll
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:10am GP:

AAP..so your saying that the LED, whilst connected to AC current will exhibit a 60 cycle strobe effect thus increasing the potential for seizure activity?

Ken, the answer is YES.

Speaking of oscillator music, Isao Tomita's "The Planets" is fairly annoying.

There's a song on the Mark Knopfler solo album "Golden Heart" that has Northumbrian pipes, which are a remote genetic mutant inbred cousin of the bagpipes.
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:12am Cecile:

that Wizzard song was supposed to a parody of the really coldblooded versions of rock and roll lounge bands used to trot out.

  Wed. 1/21/09 11:14am Vicki:

Ths is why I bought the bagpipes, Ken! To PLAY Mull of Kintyre! Is true
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:14am AAP:

Yep, the LED will be unlit for 50% of the AC cycle. Also if you are powering them from AC, you have to be careful that the negative swing of the AC won't exceed the diaode reverse breakdown voltage, which would destroy it.
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:14am still b/p:

The AC/DC song featuring bagpipes is "It's a Long Way to the Top." Check out the video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxP9fOMLE_8. It is unquestionably one of the greatest rock videos of all time. I think you'll find the young AC/DC-featuring Bon Scott-both powerful and gorgeous.

Vicki, I got a chanter for my husband when he was making noise about learning them.
You usually start with the chanter, and then move up to a pipe with bags. A chanter is like a recorder.

He never used it, but i Think I'm going to trot it out so I can play "It's a Long Way to the Top" at karaoke night...

exaudio, I must one million percent agree with you.
And I love the pipers starting to crack up at the end

I agree it's a long way to the top if you want to rock n roll, because there are so many other people trying to get to the top rock n rolling too. I personally recommend specialising in something obscure and dislikeable

  Wed. 1/21/09 11:26am Ike:

GP, you won't have more than 12k of extra bandwidth flowing in vs. the crappy Windows stream if you're using the 32k AAC+ stream. It sounds amazingly good given that it's only 32kbps. Not as good as 128k MP3, of course, but close.
  Wed. 1/21/09 11:27am Vicki:

me and ergo did Mull of Kintyre too - I chose it because it's the Wings song I like the least and it's a waltz

I don't think it's so much the *sound* of bagpipes that annoys me but the stock reference/association it always brings with it. it always seems so precious and has a false sense of nostalgia to it.

Re: Bagpipes/Ron Asheton:

One of the best moments of the memorial tribute for famed Stooges' guitarist Ron Asheton at the Music Hall Saturday night came after several punkish bands had taken the stage and kicked out raw, driving numbers, including some Stooges' tunes.

Out on the stage marched Terry Bradley with a set of bagpipes. He wore a plaid kilt and official bagpiper's uniform, and he stood ramrod straight as he piped "MacCrimmon's Lament," a mournful tune whose droning notes filled the auditorium and silenced the partying crowd.

As Bradley piped, video clips projected on the stage's rear wall showed Asheton playing in such local bands as Destroy All Monsters and Dark Carnival. The videos also featured the artist Niagara performing in an outfit that included an undergarment with tassels. One clip showed a man wagging his tongue.

"One of Ron's last wishes was to be piped to the afterlife," Bradley said.
