Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - January 20, 2009

Wednesdays 9pm - Midnight on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Listener comments!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:06pm efd:

i know it's corny, but I can't help it.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:08pm Laurie:

Evan, are you also wearing an Obama tee shirt?

Tue. 1/20/09 11:08pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Yep

Tue. 1/20/09 11:15pm cheri:

hiya evan--i'm really not into politics,,,i just go with the flow,,anyway hows the new year treating you efd??

Tue. 1/20/09 11:16pm efd:

Laurie, I am not.

Cheri, so far the new year is treating me very well.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:19pm Joe:

I think I'm actually going to miss him. He was a Nixon to my Hunter S. Thompson. Except, you know, more evil and less smart.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:19pm cheri:

evan, ty for playin that janie jones tune,,it was catchy!!!!=)

Tue. 1/20/09 11:22pm Amanda:

Hooray for this triffic farewell-Bush set, EFD! Joe, you're a Gonzo journalist?

Tue. 1/20/09 11:25pm boil:

love the loop!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:27pm Joe:

In a way. I certainly don't take guff from swine, if that's what you're asking.

EFD, great story. And it meshes with this song in ways I can't even understand.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:27pm calzone!:

Exit this Roman Shell, W and Dick!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:29pm efd:

thanks Amanda, thanks Joe! And hello, Cal!

Boil, glad you liked that loop! I worked hard on that yesterday!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:29pm Amanda:

glad to see you go go go go goodbye

etc ...but now on to the future!

This was my class's "senior song" - we all had to stand in front of everyone and sing it. It would have been much less humiliating en espanol

Tue. 1/20/09 11:30pm Wilson:

If I can't see him in an orange jump suit, seeing him in that wheelchair was a close second!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:31pm Jessica:

Ooooh, no: it was not conceivable that one might love the EFD even more, but that story made me effing weepy all over again.

I fainted during the taking of the oath.
That was probably due more to not-eating than that je ne sais global beatific moment.
I [heart] Little Evan.
Kinda loathe this song, tho. It's a grew-up-in-SF thing: that song never ever ever stopped playing, between 1980 and, er, now. Gracias for the mitigating en espanol.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:32pm Joe:

Everyone said "Dr. Strangelove", but I think he was more "Wretchedly Evil FDR"

Tue. 1/20/09 11:33pm cheri:

i said earlier i'm not into politics,,,BUT the question is will obama lower taxes & prices??? just a thought.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:33pm efd:

I thought John Hodgman's Blofeld reference on Twitter ("where's the fluffy white cat?") was pretty dead on.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:34pm john:

Not to turn the board all linguistic again or bring the tone of discourse down a notch, but someone help me out with what they were singing in the chorus after celebramos or I'll be smirking like a sixth grader all night because of what it sounded like.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:38pm Joe:

I think it was something about being Latino... what did it sound like?

Tue. 1/20/09 11:40pm john:

Something efd really shouldn't translate on the radio.

I suppose it wasn't, but oh my did it sound like it. Repeatedly.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:43pm efd:

well, if they were talking dirty in Spanish that's allowed. Although it seems unlikely,

Hi Jessica, thanks for your comments on my story. I think it's safe to say I'd never actually play the regular version of "Celebrate."

Tue. 1/20/09 11:45pm john:

Oh, I'm sure they weren't. Just a lot funnier to mishear while I was trying to read something that took 97% of my attention to plow through.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:48pm cheri:

well i'm outa here efd,,have a happy week..this is too much for me=( peace

Tue. 1/20/09 11:48pm efd:

goodnight, Cheri!

Tue. 1/20/09 11:49pm ~~~``***mustlovedogs<3***' ' ~~:

you're set SCREAMS triumph

Tue. 1/20/09 11:50pm Joe:

ELP is not something I would expect to hear in this particular timeslot. Though I see you have played them at least once before. Fripp next?

Tue. 1/20/09 11:51pm Wilson:

It sounded like, "¡chinga tu madre, chupa bolas! ¡hijo de puta, el chico remero, pinche gorda celulítica¡" but I may have mis-heard

Tue. 1/20/09 11:52pm john:

Ah, OK. I had a comma in the wrong place.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:54pm Joe:

El burro sabes mas que tu. In sixth grade, I thought that was the height of wit. I'm sure it's all types of grammatically incorrect.

Tue. 1/20/09 11:57pm Wilson:

Yeah, that was sad, Gary Kurfirst. Talking Heads manager, too

Wed. 1/21/09 12:01am cheri:

i know we did'nt talk much evan but thnx for everything!!=)=)

Wed. 1/21/09 12:05am Deaconlight:

Evan's show rocks! Wow!!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:06am Michael from the left coast:

What year on this Graham Day track?

Wed. 1/21/09 12:07am efd:

Michael, that's from 2008

Wed. 1/21/09 12:09am efd:

hi DD, thanks for making the trip from Facebook! :)

Wed. 1/21/09 12:10am cheri:

everybody loves evan!!!!!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:18am Michael from the Left Coast:

Ellen Foley was before Karla Devito--Ellen was on the albums, Karla only sang on the road.
Ellen's Nightout album is very very good

Wed. 1/21/09 12:20am john:

Ellen Foley also sang with Ian Hunter on a great single from 1980, We Gotta Get Out Of Here. Which leads into the Mott The Hoople reunion shows in London this fall. I'm so going.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:22am Deaconlight:

I believe Ellen used to be Mick Jones' (The Clash) girlfriend. Doesn't she sing backups on Hitsville UK on Snadinista!?

Wed. 1/21/09 12:33am Michael from the Left Coast:

Correct Deaconlight
She was also an actress in Married to the Mob and she was on Night Court for a season or two

Wed. 1/21/09 12:33am cheri:

this is my last post evan but next week please play some zappa just for me??? thnx verry much=)

Wed. 1/21/09 12:38am Deaconlight:

I LOVE THIS NEW DAMNED RECORD

Wed. 1/21/09 12:39am efd:

Cheri, isn't that something like your third Last Post of the night? And nothing personal, but no Zappa shall be played next week.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:39am efd:

Alright! There's a vote of approval!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:39am Deaconlight:

This record shows how consistently awesome The Damned are. How can you be lukewarm on this record??!?!??!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:41am john:

I've really liked what you've played off this elpee too, actually. May just fall into the "if you like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like" category.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:42am Deaconlight:

Without being retro, the sound does harken back to Machine Gun Etiquette, Strawberries, et al. Then again, I confess 2001's Grave Disorder is one of my favorite Damned albums. And I have been a hard-core Damned fan since the 1970s.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:42am Wilson from the Delta:

I would never in a million years have guessed that was by the Damned

Wed. 1/21/09 12:43am Deaconlight:

The Damned definitely belong in the US R&R Hall of Fame. They have been a consistently awesome punk band since the 70s who have continued to grow their sound.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:45am Deaconlight:

Evan, didn't I ask that you please play some crap so I can go to bed? I'm so tired. Please don't play any more good songs.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:45am efd:

I know it's kind of apples and oranges, but personally this Love Is All song excites me a lot more than that Damned track. This album reminds me of that mid-80s 'goth' period, which I wasn't that crazy about either.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:46am Wilson:

Sadly, my knowledge of the damned starts and ends with "damned damned damned" and "Smash It Up"

Wed. 1/21/09 12:46am Joe B:

Deacon, prepare for insomnia!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:46am Wilson:

All right!!!!!!!!!!!!! Washington Social Club. You've made my week.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:47am john:

That'd do it. I was thinking "Phantastmagoria" too. But I loved that record, though I knew a lot of people who couldn't stand it.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:49am Deaconlight:

Yeah, Phatasmagoria is one of my favorite records. And I promise I do like lots of other bands besides The Damned.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:49am Joe:

Pip sounds just like Towlie.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:52am Deaconlight:

Well I was gonna hang around to the end of the show but now I dunno know...

Wed. 1/21/09 12:53am Deaconlight:

Then again I did ask Evan to play something that sucks so I can go to bed.

Wed. 1/21/09 12:53am john:

Tony Burrows, Joey Levine...Bubblegum Gods set...

Wed. 1/21/09 12:54am Deaconlight:

Isn't "Best of Ohio Express" an oxymoron?

Wed. 1/21/09 12:58am Deaconlight:

2am? OK. I can't make it. I gotta get up at 7 to take the kiddies to school. Great show, Evan!

Wed. 1/21/09 12:59am Ricky Klondike:

Evan, this is Ricky Klondike from Cyclone 60. I wanted to thank you for coming to our show at Club Midway this past Saturday. Much appreciated!

Wed. 1/21/09 1:01am efd:

goodnight DD, thanks for stopping by! we'll have to discuss Ohio Express another time. :)

Wed. 1/21/09 1:01am Joe B (scatterbrain):

Got anything by the band Fantasy Island? I guess some Jin O'Rorke would suffice.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:03am Joe B:

er should read: JiM

Wed. 1/21/09 1:04am efd:

haha! sorry Joe, I couldn't resist bringing that up again.

Hey RIcky, it was my pleasure! That was a great show.... I've got your Smash Hits CD with me tonight, will be spinning it in a bit.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:07am Joe:

Cyclone 60 + Spaceman Bassman + 2 dollar Colt .45 = excellent show. A+ will do again.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:07am Ricky Klondike:

Whoa! Haven't heard that record in a while... looking forward to it! Thanks again, man. All three of us dig your show hard.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:09am Michael from the Left coast:

This is the exact same song as Son of the Father by Chicory Tip (one of those Chinn and Chapman Brit pop hits of the seventies).

Wed. 1/21/09 1:09am Ricky Klondike:

Thanks, Joe. Glad you enjoyed it. Cezar Fiberglass (Spaceman Bassman) is a joy to watch, isn't he?

Wed. 1/21/09 1:12am efd:

MIchael - correct, although I know it by Giorgio as opposed to Chicory Tip.
Ricky - I didn't even know there *was* an earlier CD until Bob gave it to me at the show. The admiration is mutual! :)

Wed. 1/21/09 1:13am Joe:

Absolutely spectacular. When the smoke machine went on and the visor went down, I knew you guys were gonna be legit. We're all also very much enjoying the album copies - Psychoaster is definitely a favorite. You'll definitely see us at Delancey!

Wed. 1/21/09 1:15am Joe:

Aw man now I gotta get a copy of -this- somehow.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:16am efd:

I need to upload my photos from that show... I think a lot of them are "arty," by which I mean "blurry," but I think that might work.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:17am Joe:

The nice girl sitting at the table next to me got some really great pics and possibly video... also at least one classic photo of myself being a total deviant.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:18am Ricky Klondike:

Joe- you'll get a copy at The Delancey.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:21am Ricky Klondike:

Evan- blurry works with us. our website has nothing but blurry photos of us, if I'm not mistaken.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:21am Jessica:

"Make/Give me your kisses"

Wed. 1/21/09 1:24am mikey c:

i recomend flannel lined jeans from haband

Wed. 1/21/09 1:27am efd:

thanks Mikey, duly noted.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:51am Nick the Bard:

FYI was the show that Murphy Brown was an anchor/reporter for on the show.

Wed. 1/21/09 1:53am efd:

aha! thanks, Nick... who knows why that was even in my brain, I never watched either of those shows.
