Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:08pm From: Sybil

Good evening all!

What is this song? I love it!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:12pm From: Laurie

I had a fairly gnarly cold recently and discovered there was nothing recorded on my DVR that I felt like watching. I was thisclose to watching Elvis Costello's talk show on demand, but I decided to switch over to VH11 instead and watch a rerun of the Rock of Love Bus series premiere. I think I made the right decision.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:13pm From: Joe

Hmm, looks like Evan left you hanging.

on the Telephone.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:13pm From: efd

hi Sybil! That was Telephone, described by our own Joe McGasko as "France's Rolling Stones."

Tue. 1/13/09 11:14pm From: john

Ric Menck is God. Well, God-like. Goddish?

Tue. 1/13/09 11:15pm From: Sybil

Joe gets me back for last week.

I'm trying to Google Telephone. You can imagine how that's working out.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:17pm From: john

Maybe with the appropriate accents aigus? téléphone. And type it with a slightly nasal intonation.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:18pm From: HotRod

uhuh,,,

Tue. 1/13/09 11:18pm From: E.L.

Did you try looking under "France's + Rolling + Stones + Telephone + Band + 70s, starting with?"

Tue. 1/13/09 11:18pm From: ?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C3%A9l%C3%A9phone

Yes.. it actually works. No, I don't use tinyurl.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:20pm From: efd

Laurie, I think you made the right decision as well.

I'll talk to you just after midnight.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:20pm From: Sybil

Thanks, ?.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:22pm From: E.L.

hiya evan--- happy 09,,,peace!!!=)

Tue. 1/13/09 11:24pm From: efd

E.L. doesn't use tinyurl either, apparently.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:24pm From: Parick in Oregon

Nice stache! Almost as good as your mix. Almost.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:26pm From: Joe

Spectacular!

Also,I think I like this song better with the reverb-sax.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:26pm From: efd

hi Cheri, John, Joe. E.L., that pic is hilarious

Tue. 1/13/09 11:26pm From: Laurie

I teared up after reading an X-Men story just now. Should I be ashamed of myself?

Also, for the longest time, I wanted to know what Tin Yurl was. I'm sometimes slow.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:27pm From: Sybil

My cat loves this song.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:27pm From: john

Scruffy The Cat! First heard on WNYU. By me, anyway.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:27pm From: cheri

evan please spin more 70s tunes,,,thanx

Tue. 1/13/09 11:28pm From: Amanda

Is she a Russian Blue cat? ZING CAT-FANCIER JOKE

Tue. 1/13/09 11:28pm From: Joe

Tom doesn't like these guys? This song is great!

I guess Tom just doesn't like alot of things.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:29pm From: Sybil

Laurie, anyone who doesn't tear up after reading X-Men has a heart of stone.

And Tin Yurl was a band out of Akron. I'm pretty sure about that one.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:30pm From: Sybil

Yes, she is, Amanda.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:31pm From: E.L.

Hey Amanda! If you know any more good cat jokes I might be able to offer you a staff writing position. It pays nothing but it has even fewer benefits.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:31pm From: Joe

I just read Watchmen... it made me cry. Cry tears of sheer awesome.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:32pm From: Laurie

For the record, it was the one where Nightcrawler uses the Danger Room to generate a facsimile of the now dead Shadowkitty so he can hug her and tell her he misses her. Sniff.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:34pm From: john

I thought you meant you just called an easy pop-up to second base a mammoth home run.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:35pm From: Joe

I hate John Sterling.

"It is high.. it is far.. IT IS....!!!!.... caught by the centerfielder."

Tue. 1/13/09 11:35pm From: E.L.

Concentrate EFD! Remember your training!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:36pm From: cheri

efd--did you anything terrific to ring in the new year?

Tue. 1/13/09 11:36pm From: john

Of course, with Cano at second base, there are no easy pop-ups.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:36pm From: Laurie

I must also say: I lol'd, Amanda. I thank you.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:38pm From: billy

i need baseball to start soon, man!......you should play some Grand Mal....i picked their album from 2006...its a great great album....have a great 09'

Tue. 1/13/09 11:38pm From: Sybil

I need to invent a drink called "Blue Russian". In honor of my cat.

Less Sterling and more Scully, plz.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:39pm From: Joe

But... Cano can do!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:39pm From: Amanda

Whoa, Sybil! Whoa, Laurie!

They are cute. My family has Chartreux which look similar.

E.L., SIGN ME UP! The position sounds FUR-rociously prestigious! Eh? Eh?

Tue. 1/13/09 11:40pm From: john

Yeah. He Can-not. I miss Bob Murphy.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:40pm From: Joe

Another relevant Sterlingism - "It's a bash from the 'stache"

Tue. 1/13/09 11:42pm From: efd

oh boy, what pandora's box have I opened!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:43pm From: billy

RICKEY HENDERSON!!!!!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:45pm From: Sybil

Yesterday there was an article in the Times, comparing Henderson and Manny Ramirez.

I need baseball.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:46pm From: billy

comparing their wacky personalities?

Tue. 1/13/09 11:46pm From: john

Comparing them how? They're both unsigned for next year, of course.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:47pm From: Sal

Funk I'm in NY. Listening live for a change

Tue. 1/13/09 11:47pm From: Sybil

You got it, Billy. And that they are shoo-ins for the HOF.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:47pm From: billy

Rickey will sign first

Tue. 1/13/09 11:47pm From: Laurie

That little Bush-ism reminds me. Should I be honest with my boss and tell her I need to take Jan. 20th off because I want to go to an Inauguration Party? Or should I make something up? Or should I wait 'til Tuesday and call in sick or something? I called in gay last month. I'm pretty sure she's still pissed at me over that one, even if I did explain to her a month in advance that I would not be coming into work that day so I could be part of a civil rights movement or some such.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:48pm From: efd

hey Sal! great to hear from you... how long are you here for? drop me an email.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:48pm From: Sybil

Here ya go. I know about tinyurl, but I'm too lazy...

http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/11/the-similarities-between-rickey-and-manny/

Tue. 1/13/09 11:49pm From: efd

clearly there is a demand within the efd community for a hot stove show. I'll start working on that right after next week's Inauguration special.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:49pm From: Sal

Here until Friday and then I'm done. I'll update you in an email.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:50pm From: john

I think that two year deal from the Doggers is the only hard offer Manny's had so far. At least as of a couple days ago. 32 days til pitchers and catchers.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:51pm From: cheri

evan--if i'm one of your fave comenters please play more tunes from the 70s,,thanx=)

Tue. 1/13/09 11:51pm From: billy

efd....i gotta say...baseball goes really well with rock and roll....i often mute the tv and listen to tunes during the game.....totally vibe out

Tue. 1/13/09 11:52pm From: Joe

I would've called in gay, but nobody would've believed me...

If I were you, I'd call in sick, but use slydial.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:52pm From: Sybil

Supposedly the Giants are seriously interested. Which, if it happened, would give me an excuse to visit my brother a lot.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:53pm From: john

Scott Ostler in the SF Chronicle yesterday, pushing the case for signing him: "Ramirez is expensive, but so is sucking."

Tue. 1/13/09 11:55pm From: E.L.

Maybe I'm the last person to find this site or maybe someone is inventing things as fast I can imagine them: www.gianturl.com.
Am I in Bed Time Stories or Inkheart?

Tue. 1/13/09 11:56pm From: Joe

That is the funniest thing I've ever seen.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:56pm From: efd

Cheri, even favorite commenters have limited influence.

Tue. 1/13/09 11:57pm From: Sybil

E. L., that is too funny!

Tue. 1/13/09 11:58pm From: Sybil

Especially the copyright notice.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:00am From: E.L.

Zing!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:00am From: Laurie

I had a feeling you were going to do that!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:01am From: efd

you know we love you, Laurie!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:01am From: Laurie

I've been zung.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:02am From: Spoony

Oh Laurie. You're a good sport.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:03am From: cheri

g'nite all!!!!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:04am From: E.L.

'Tis true, Laurie is a very good sport and well liked by all.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:04am From: Sybil

bye, cheri!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:08am From: Laurie

I saw Pink Reason recently!! The long-haired fella from the Electric Bunnies and some other local band comprised of 2/3 of Electric Bunnies called something like "You Melted My Sunglasses" or maybe "We Melted Your Sunglasses," but melting sunglasses is definitely part of it. Anyhoodle, I don't know if he's part of the band, but he played with them, and the lights were turned off, and people shined little flashlights toward the stage, and it was really good and spacey. I liked it! One of the Jacuzzi Boys handed me the flashlight he was using, but I had to return the flashlight afterward. If I remember, they played a bill with Times New Viking as part of this Art Basel thing sponsored by Converse.

It was a weird week.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:12am From: Laurie

I'm going to guess that inauguration concert featuring H.R. isn't an official thing.

Also, whenever I think of H.R., I fondly recall the rumor that he's secretly some rich man's boyfriend or something. I don't know if it's true, or if it's just one of those rumors we like to make up about homophobic people. You know, because all homophobes are closet cases or something.

Oh my god, I think there's speed in this cold medicine. I had to show the pharmacist my ID and sign my name before I could buy it.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:13am From: Joe

Doesn't mean there's speed -in- it, it means you can make speed -from- it

For directions how, just shoot me an email!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:13am From: Sybil

Pseudephedrine, probs. You could make meth from it.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:14am From: Joe

If it took four seconds to type three paragraphs, it's got speed in it.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:14am From: Sybil

Oh, Joe outtypes me again.

So, should we pool our resources and make some money?

Wed. 1/14/09 12:16am From: Amanda

I know I signed a Facebook petition to get Bad Brains to play the inauguration itself, and I am unhappy it did not pass.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:23am From: cheri

g'nite efd,,,have a happy week,,

Wed. 1/14/09 12:24am From: efd

goodnight Cheri!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:26am From: Laurie

Evan, you have some funny commenteers, if I may say so myself.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:30am From: Sybil

Storied, but unsung, hmm....

I've got to get the guys at Language Log on this one.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:31am From: Michael from the Left Coast

So does the John Carter anthology have "Brown and Porter's Meat Exporter's Lorry" by Herman's Hermits?
You know of course the Ivy League sing on Can't Explain by the Who.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:34am From: Sybil

Thanks, MftLC!!!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:35am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Carter is a major hero--he sang Winchester Cathedral and wrote "My World Fell Down" by Sagittarius among many.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:37am From: john

Carter also wrote "My World Fell Down," covered by Sagittarius on the stunningly gorgeous Present Tense album. That and Beach Baby is pretty much everything I know about John Carter.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:37am From: john

Beat me to it, Michael!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:39am From: Sybil

Evan, you have some knowledgeable commenteers, if I may say so myself. :-P

Wed. 1/14/09 12:39am From: efd

yeah, i think i had a passing awareness of the Sagittarius connection, but it was really "Beach Baby" and "Sound Of Summer" that sucked me in. Thanks for the additional info Michael and John!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:40am From: efd

Sybil, you're telling me! I love it.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:40am From: john

Loving this Popguns track...sort of like the Shop Assistants if they didn't record underwater.

Pleasure's all mine. Any time I can work Curt Boettcher into a conversation, I'm there.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:41am From: Joe

This popguns is -so- gooooood

Wed. 1/14/09 12:43am From: Sybil

underwater... so that's how they do it!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:44am From: john

Well, I'm not entirely sure what the Shop Assistants recorded under. Could have been Jello.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:46am From: Sybil

More proof that 1977 wasn't altogether the awesome year I thought it was at the time.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:47am From: Amanda

Oh Shaun Cassidy, born so late.

Hey all, it is my birthday this week. Hope it's not gauche to mention that.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:49am From: Sybil

Happy advance birthday, Amanda!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:49am From: Joe

Yes, gauche. Gauche and unbecoming of a lady such as yourself.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:51am From: Sybil

You got something against lefthanders?

Wed. 1/14/09 12:53am From: Michael from the Left Coast

Yeah--Thomas Function!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:54am From: Joe

Wow... I got etymology pwnd.

Happy birthday, 'manda

Wed. 1/14/09 12:55am From: Amanda

OH YOU GUYS. Thanks. :)

No, Sybil, I am half left-handed myself!

Thomas Function YAAAAY.

Wed. 1/14/09 12:56am From: john

And quite dextrously too, Joe!

Wed. 1/14/09 12:59am From: Sybil

I myself am ambigaucherous.

Yes, I know that's an unhappy melding of Latin and Greek. But no one but this audience would ever notice!

Wed. 1/14/09 1:00am From: Sybil

It's the Stainless Steel Rat!

Or not.

Wed. 1/14/09 1:01am From: john

Actually I'm not sure there's any Greek in it, Sybil. What am I missing?

Wed. 1/14/09 1:04am From: Joe

JAKE ONE what the deal what the deal

Wed. 1/14/09 1:05am From: Sybil

Oh, man, John, you're right. No Greek. Whatever puzzle here, is not that one.

I've got to go review my (linguistic) roots. Just, not tonight.

Wed. 1/14/09 1:07am From: Joe

Actually, wikipedia says "ambi-" is "proto-celtic"... not to... you know... be a jerk or anything.

Also, I absolutely cannot wait to drink beer all day on saturday then go see this band. Can-not-wait.

Wed. 1/14/09 1:08am From: Joe

I mean WOOOOO!, you guys. Seriously.

Wed. 1/14/09 1:10am From: john

Ambo is Latin for "both."

Wed. 1/14/09 1:12am From: efd

and Street for "ambulance"

Wed. 1/14/09 1:13am From: Laurie

Okay, I'm actually proud of this funny I just wrote. It was in response to a whiny film student complaining about how a piece of crap movie got greenlit. He does this all the time. I'm sorry your shitty film school movie isn't getting bought, jerkface, we're tired of hearing it. "I hope there's a sequel, and I hope it's called My Bloody Valentine II: Loveless."

On second thought, maybe Loveless should be the final part of a My Bloody Valentine triology. The sequel, then, should be My Bloody Valentine II: Isn't Anything, and the tagline will be "but filled with RAGE." Or something like that.

I'm going to go edit my post on that messageboard.

Wed. 1/14/09 1:13am From: efd

Joe, I hope you're taking public transit or have a designated driver!

Sorry to get all grownuppy on you...

Wed. 1/14/09 1:18am From: john

ταχος is Ancient Greek for "speed."

Wed. 1/14/09 1:24am From: Joe

WFMU: DJ's that care.

No worries, we'll be at Down the Hatch until at least 7, looks like an awkward train-ride but a nice walk over to alphabet city. Unless you can bum 5 dudes a ride?

Wed. 1/14/09 1:31am From: efd

I care, but not enough to try to cram five of you in my car. If the weather predictions hold true a walk of any distance on Saturday night should sober you right up, in any case.
