I want to put together a CD of songs in all different languages that prominently feature "la la la"-type choruses. This will definitely be included.

On Bette Midler's "Songs for the New Depression" album, there is a cover of "Shiver Me Timbers" by Waits that seques into a song in French called Samedi et Vendredi, in which "la la la" is repeated. Bette also has a song called "You're Moving Out Today", a studio cut included as a bonus track on "Live At Last", which ends in an elaborate "la la la" bit.

Thu. 1/8/09 12:26pm From: C

Awesome! Thanks for the tip. A great one is "Like a Knife" by Cui Jian. He repeats "dei dei dei" over 15 times each chorus.

Thu. 1/8/09 12:44pm From: Sean Daily

I could go through the Guardian of Forever, Carmichael. But then I'd have to deal with Harlan Ellison, and I hear he's a son of a bitch. Hell of a writer, but...

Thu. 1/8/09 12:44pm From: stingy d

i've been well how have you been? i have too! quit my job. slinked out, and got fired actually. does that allow me to get unemployment? nah, right?

Thu. 1/8/09 12:45pm From: Carmichael

Thu. 1/8/09 12:51pm From: stingy d

you can do it too, just give up on caring about stuff you don't care about

Thu. 1/8/09 12:51pm From: Carmichael

Stingy,

You should qualify if you were fired. If you stomped out and proclaimed "I QUIT!", well, then that's another matter entirely.

But get yo ass down to to "Emplyment Development" and make them say know. That's your money they're holding.

Thu. 1/8/09 12:52pm From: Carmichael

Thu. 1/8/09 1:10pm From: cd pat

Me mum lives in Pittsburgh.
Did you have salad with fries on it?

Thu. 1/8/09 1:35pm From: fishmonkeystew

Hey, Scott, I have a friend who owns a record label in Pittsburg- Sort of Records. Ever heard of it?

Thu. 1/8/09 1:37pm From: dc pat

I use to live in PGH. Kind of a depressing place.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:38pm From: annie

funny, that. i have some attachments to pittsburg, old friends with sad stories, is it depressing overall?

Thu. 1/8/09 1:38pm From: Taylor

Unidentified Far-East cut may have been by Suntaraporn...?

Thu. 1/8/09 1:39pm From: Cecile

Beaver Falls is depressing, but it has good Italian home cooking and also the most amazing donut shop whose name escapes me.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:39pm From: dc pat

just depressing to live there. When I visit, I have a blast.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:40pm From: Carmichael

My old roommate was from Pottsville. His stories scared me.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:41pm From: Cecile

that's what I gather, dcp

Thu. 1/8/09 1:43pm From: dc pat

It's a nice place and they really want to be a real city but when you sit down to look in the paper to see what to do on Saturday night , and there's....NOTHING TO DO, it's pretty sad...so you go to Chief's cafe and get dollar shots...

Thu. 1/8/09 1:47pm From: Carmichael

I was going to ask about restaurants, but Scott said NO FOOD TALK.

So I won't.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:47pm From: annie

my friend from there were in the biker crowd, so they just stayed home and did drugs.. both are now dead... RIP, leaving 2 kids behind. i see that both have left that city too..

Thu. 1/8/09 1:50pm From: dc pat

I'm not a huge fan of DC either but at least there's always something going on...

I can't remember eating any food in PGH

Thu. 1/8/09 1:53pm From: dc pat

However, the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern has great beer and I saw the Cynics with the New Bomb Turks there and it was heaven.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:55pm From: annie

i was talking w/a young quaker friend on xmas break and she told me that the obamas changed their minds, the girls are going to sidwell.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:55pm From: Scott

I love Pittsburgh. I hated it before I ever went there, but that's because I saw that Tom Cruise movie about football and just figured... but yeah, that's there too. Lotta depressing, but i had the best fucking waffle ever; and beer and record shopping can keep you busy for a long time. Don't ever go there on Steelers game day though.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:57pm From: annie

see, i would spend all my time in cafes, book stores and record shops...

Thu. 1/8/09 1:58pm From: dc pat

That's what I'm saying: visit, don't live.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:59pm From: annie

dcp, there was a great used book store in kensington back behind conn ave; i lived there, practically, and my son was dragged there...good thing he liked to read.

Thu. 1/8/09 1:59pm From: Cecile

i have yet to go record shopping in PGH, but that's not for lack of trying. I gotta do that next time.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:03pm From: Parq

Never been to PBG, always been curious about it. T'aint nothing like NYC, see, but there a lot of cities with stuff to recommend them. I never thought I'd dig Seattle, e.g., but I had a blast.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:03pm From: Scott

But it's cheap and there's some amazing and crazy houses. What's with all those houses built on top of retail outlets in Squirrel Hill??

Thu. 1/8/09 2:04pm From: Cecile

remember the version of temptation on the muppet show done by the chickens?

Oh, push came to shove, I could make a go of it there, but the transit would have to get a lot better.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:06pm From: Parq

Actually, 'Cile, your own twin cities are on my short-list of American cities I really want to check out.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:06pm From: Scott

Who could forget it Cecile?!! And didn't that feature the -other- Miss Piggy? ie, not Frank Oz? Who was that other Miss Piggy?

Thu. 1/8/09 2:08pm From: dc pat

To sum up: PGH = great waffles, beer, records, used books, Squirrel Hill, the Cynics, Andy Warhol Museum, cheap. PGH not= good transit, good career, avoid professional sports, happily ever-after...

Thu. 1/8/09 2:10pm From: Cecile

dc pat, also Italain wedding soup and salads with fries on them.

Parq, it is a good place to live. It has its charms and disappointments like anywhere.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm From: Cecile

and the National Aviary if you like birds.
I like birds.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm From: Carmichael

Scott, that would be Richard Hunt.

I don't know why I know this.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm From: Jonathan Steinke

Oh my God, where can I get that Jimmy Masaluke? DAMN.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:12pm From: Jonathan Steinke

Masuluke, sorry...

Thu. 1/8/09 2:12pm From: annie

scott; don't read this....

i will always love that little hungarian restaurant in shaker heights..

Thu. 1/8/09 2:13pm From: Carmichael

Damn, this sounds like The Meters.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:14pm From: Scott

Also on the Pbgh Pro tip: not far from the aviary is the Mattress Factory, with some fab permanent light installations. Also the view from atop (and within) the Cathedral of Learning. And weren't the Tammys from there??
Carmichael, thanks!! I guess I should have asked also: why?
Jonathan Steinke, you oughtta drop Joe McGasko a line - you can do so via his playlists. Indeed, an amazing comp he put together.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:15pm From: dc pat

it's funny Cecile, when I lived there, NO body talked about anything with fries on it--salad, hoagies, what ever. Now that I've left, that's all I hear...

there are some fine Mid Eastern and Indian restaurants there. JEEZUS, I'm done talkin' about PGH!!!

Thu. 1/8/09 2:16pm From: Jonathan Steinke

Thank u, Scott!!

this isn't going to end well...

Thu. 1/8/09 2:18pm From: Jonathan

No more last names. I do that purely instinctually.

Thu. 1/8/09 2:18pm From: Carmichael

Thu. 1/8/09 2:27pm From: Lizardner Dave

Only been to the Church Brewworks - great saison the night I was there! I bought a glass, a growler, and a tripel. The glass was smithereens in a matter of days.

Hey, if you're ever in Harrisburg, PA, go to ABC brewery. The beer is fan-freakin-tastic.

Sigh. Pat, I spent a few years in H'burg in the summer of '81. If only they'd had something like ABC in those days. Is it in town, or out at one of the malls?

Been to the Church Brew Works twice, thought the beer was pretty standard brew pub fare (that's not a bad thing..) but thought the food was far above average compared to lots of other brewpubs I've been to.

Jeeze I grew up in Mechanicsburg across the river. I was in high school in 81. It's on Cameron street right in Harrisburg. Appalachian Brewing Company.

HI Lizardner Dave - i'd actually say the opposite, thought the grub was pretty standard, as far as brewpubs go. Good, but not great. That saison was fabulous, and also made for a great mussels recipe a few days later.

that's what was cool about Penn, both beer and food were nummy. I wished I could have stayed two days longer for their "hunter's dinner"
