  Thu. 1/8/09 12:14pm C:

I want to put together a CD of songs in all different languages that prominently feature "la la la"-type choruses. This will definitely be included.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:16pm stingy d:

the islands... or the unicorns maybe... did a song about all the different types of ways to say "oh" in songs
Thu. 1/8/09 12:17pm doug from dc:

Thanks for spinning a track from the district of noise comp!
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:17pm C:

Thanks Stingy, but I want the la's and oh's and doh's to be sincere.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:18pm Lizardner Dave:

You know what I haven't heard in ages? "Loose".
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:19pm Bad Ronald:

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:24pm Parq:

On Bette Midler's "Songs for the New Depression" album, there is a cover of "Shiver Me Timbers" by Waits that seques into a song in French called Samedi et Vendredi, in which "la la la" is repeated. Bette also has a song called "You're Moving Out Today", a studio cut included as a bonus track on "Live At Last", which ends in an elaborate "la la la" bit.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:26pm C:

Awesome! Thanks for the tip. A great one is "Like a Knife" by Cui Jian. He repeats "dei dei dei" over 15 times each chorus.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:26pm dc pat:

Love the Dickies Bad Ron... You Drive Me Ape You Big Gorilla!!!
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:27pm stingy d:

Thu. 1/8/09 12:29pm doug from dc:

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:30pm Sean Daily:

Oh my God, dc pat, "Loose".

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:31pm stingy d:

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:36pm Carmichael:

Most men are, Cecile ....

I saw the movie on HBO, and it only made me pine away further.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:40pm Sean Daily:

I think I'm experiencing one of those temporal distortions that they're always running into on Star Trek with this Kool & the Gang track...
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:40pm Dylan:

Dylan Approves
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:41pm Betty's ghost:

I'm thinkin' my....body...of work was about as complete as it was gonna get. There were no fresh sessions penciled in my planner when I passed. I'm good.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:41pm Carmichael:

You need to jump through Mr. Atos' obelisk to a different time.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:41pm Sean Daily:

Yes, but is she fresh? It's a very subtle theme...
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:42pm Cecile:

my husband had D&D night soon after, and set up a little tableau of all his Betty figs, and superheroines wearing leopard. LOL!

Sean, I think her expiration date is quickly approaching.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:44pm Sean Daily:

I could go through the Guardian of Forever, Carmichael. But then I'd have to deal with Harlan Ellison, and I hear he's a son of a bitch. Hell of a writer, but...
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:44pm stingy d:

i've been well how have you been? i have too! quit my job. slinked out, and got fired actually. does that allow me to get unemployment? nah, right?
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:45pm Carmichael:

Could be worse, Sean. You could end up with Ambrose Bierce, who was a curmudgeon's curmudgeon.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:46pm PMD:

Hi Scott! Where's the beer? Happy New Year!
I'm a poet and I didn't even realize it...
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:47pm Cecile:

yeah, ask Harland when the third volume of Dangerous VIsions is coming out and watch the fun.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:47pm Cecile:

stingy, that sucks.
do you have something in the wings?
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:48pm dc pat:

stingy! I warned you NOT to get fired. Now you're going to be watching youtube videos all day...
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:48pm stingy d:

its actually glorious... i have a money making venture already well under way. so, yes. but it would be nice to receive unemployment, i just can't imagine i qualify.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:49pm stingy d:

all i do is watch sherman the sneezing monkey pat... all day.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:49pm dc pat:

I'm not worried about you, I'M jealous as hell!!
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:51pm stingy d:

you can do it too, just give up on caring about stuff you don't care about
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:51pm Carmichael:

You should qualify if you were fired. If you stomped out and proclaimed "I QUIT!", well, then that's another matter entirely.

But get yo ass down to to "Emplyment Development" and make them say know. That's your money they're holding.
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:52pm Carmichael:

That's "make them say no" ....
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:52pm dc pat:

I don't care about the Feelies. sorry..
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:53pm stingy d:

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:55pm dc pat:

  Thu. 1/8/09 12:57pm stingy d:

oh. well yea... environmental conversations are great
  Thu. 1/8/09 12:59pm Carmichael:

Weren't these guys from Sweden? Norway? I remember their picture back then. She looks like Annisette.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:00pm Cecile:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:00pm dc pat:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:00pm Carmichael:

Aah, the Dutch. Love their babies ...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:01pm still b/p:

Would an environmental conversation be a gaialogue?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:02pm dc pat:

nice still. I REALLY care about Made in Mexico. This RULES
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:03pm stingy d:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:05pm stingy d:

well folks... unfortuously i gotta go make bread. tell gp dat i set hi
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:06pm annie:

pat, re: unemployed... the freedom is way cool , but the lack of dough hits hard and living off the kindness of others can only go so far. i wish it were not a money-based economy...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:06pm too much stingy d:

and i say hi to everybody else dat i would say hi to, bad ronola and like whoeva kid, for real. scott you the maintainer of all this, you and trouble be the bets. and jason sigal be the bets too.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:07pm Cecile:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:09pm dc pat:

I'll be working till I'm graved--kids to feed. and noise ballets don't provide enough dough to live on.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:10pm Carmichael:

Cecile, somehow I knew you click on my obscure reference ...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:10pm cd pat:

crap, you turn off the stream for ONE second to check out Made in Mexico (new favorite band) and you miss Ty Segall (old favorite band).
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:13pm Bad Ronald:

Hey Stingy, welcome back! I was asking about you the other day...
I see you quit, I hope all's well w/you!
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:14pm Cecile:

carm, my brain was a little slow in remembering, but my stomach helped it along.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:17pm Cecile:

I have music minus one for the doors...

Is that Lila's xylophone?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:18pm GP:

Hey Stingy, Bad Ronald, Annie, Ceceile, DC,...hey everyone, hey world...happy new year...at work right now so kind of passively checking comments.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:19pm annie:

hi GP. happy new year...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:20pm Cecile:

annie, if it were a LP-based economy, we'd both be rich women.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:21pm annie:

watching you-tube all day is bad enough, what gets me is spider solitaire!!!! i easily kill two hours at that!
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:21pm annie:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:22pm dc pat:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:23pm Carmichael:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:27pm Bad Ronald:

Carm - I recommend this if you haven't already...

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:28pm Carmichael:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:30pm dale:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:31pm Bad Ronald:

  Thu. 1/8/09 1:34pm Cecile:

Me mum lives in Pittsburgh.
Did you have salad with fries on it?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:35pm fishmonkeystew:

Hey, Scott, I have a friend who owns a record label in Pittsburg- Sort of Records. Ever heard of it?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:37pm dc pat:

I use to live in PGH. Kind of a depressing place.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:38pm annie:

funny, that. i have some attachments to pittsburg, old friends with sad stories, is it depressing overall?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:38pm Taylor:

Unidentified Far-East cut may have been by Suntaraporn...?
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:39pm Cecile:

Beaver Falls is depressing, but it has good Italian home cooking and also the most amazing donut shop whose name escapes me.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:39pm dc pat:

just depressing to live there. When I visit, I have a blast.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:40pm Carmichael:

My old roommate was from Pottsville. His stories scared me.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:41pm Cecile:

that's what I gather, dcp
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:43pm dc pat:

It's a nice place and they really want to be a real city but when you sit down to look in the paper to see what to do on Saturday night , and there's....NOTHING TO DO, it's pretty sad...so you go to Chief's cafe and get dollar shots...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:47pm Carmichael:

I was going to ask about restaurants, but Scott said NO FOOD TALK.

So I won't.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:47pm annie:

my friend from there were in the biker crowd, so they just stayed home and did drugs.. both are now dead... RIP, leaving 2 kids behind. i see that both have left that city too..
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:50pm dc pat:

I'm not a huge fan of DC either but at least there's always something going on...

I can't remember eating any food in PGH
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:53pm dc pat:

However, the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern has great beer and I saw the Cynics with the New Bomb Turks there and it was heaven.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:55pm annie:

i was talking w/a young quaker friend on xmas break and she told me that the obamas changed their minds, the girls are going to sidwell.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:55pm Scott:

I love Pittsburgh. I hated it before I ever went there, but that's because I saw that Tom Cruise movie about football and just figured... but yeah, that's there too. Lotta depressing, but i had the best fucking waffle ever; and beer and record shopping can keep you busy for a long time. Don't ever go there on Steelers game day though.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:57pm annie:

see, i would spend all my time in cafes, book stores and record shops...
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:58pm dc pat:

That's what I'm saying: visit, don't live.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:59pm annie:

dcp, there was a great used book store in kensington back behind conn ave; i lived there, practically, and my son was dragged there...good thing he liked to read.
  Thu. 1/8/09 1:59pm Cecile:

i have yet to go record shopping in PGH, but that's not for lack of trying. I gotta do that next time.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:03pm Parq:

Never been to PBG, always been curious about it. T'aint nothing like NYC, see, but there a lot of cities with stuff to recommend them. I never thought I'd dig Seattle, e.g., but I had a blast.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:03pm Scott:

But it's cheap and there's some amazing and crazy houses. What's with all those houses built on top of retail outlets in Squirrel Hill??
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:04pm Cecile:

remember the version of temptation on the muppet show done by the chickens?

Oh, push came to shove, I could make a go of it there, but the transit would have to get a lot better.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:06pm Parq:

Actually, 'Cile, your own twin cities are on my short-list of American cities I really want to check out.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:06pm Scott:

Who could forget it Cecile?!! And didn't that feature the -other- Miss Piggy? ie, not Frank Oz? Who was that other Miss Piggy?
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:08pm dc pat:

To sum up: PGH = great waffles, beer, records, used books, Squirrel Hill, the Cynics, Andy Warhol Museum, cheap. PGH not= good transit, good career, avoid professional sports, happily ever-after...
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:10pm Cecile:

dc pat, also Italain wedding soup and salads with fries on them.

Parq, it is a good place to live. It has its charms and disappointments like anywhere.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm Cecile:

and the National Aviary if you like birds.
I like birds.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm Carmichael:

Scott, that would be Richard Hunt.

I don't know why I know this.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:11pm Jonathan Steinke:

Oh my God, where can I get that Jimmy Masaluke? DAMN.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:12pm Jonathan Steinke:

Masuluke, sorry...
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:12pm annie:

scott; don't read this....

i will always love that little hungarian restaurant in shaker heights..
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:13pm Carmichael:

Damn, this sounds like The Meters.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:14pm Scott:

Also on the Pbgh Pro tip: not far from the aviary is the Mattress Factory, with some fab permanent light installations. Also the view from atop (and within) the Cathedral of Learning. And weren't the Tammys from there??
Carmichael, thanks!! I guess I should have asked also: why?
Jonathan Steinke, you oughtta drop Joe McGasko a line - you can do so via his playlists. Indeed, an amazing comp he put together.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:15pm dc pat:

it's funny Cecile, when I lived there, NO body talked about anything with fries on it--salad, hoagies, what ever. Now that I've left, that's all I hear...

there are some fine Mid Eastern and Indian restaurants there. JEEZUS, I'm done talkin' about PGH!!!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:16pm Jonathan Steinke:

Thank u, Scott!!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:17pm xangoir:

Happy Town Happy Town
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:17pm Cecile:

oh, the shangri-las.
this isn't going to end well...
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:18pm Jonathan:

No more last names. I do that purely instinctually.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:18pm Carmichael:

Right Cecile ... Johnny's gonna die in a wreck, or they're all gonna get stranded at the altar.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:19pm GP:

60's flash back..wait..I wasn't even born yet...weird.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:20pm MikeG:

Oh the humanity!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:24pm Lizardner Dave:

Hey, what's the bed music playing right now?
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:26pm SCott:

Lizardner Dave, that was Kebekelektrik's version of Ravel's Bolero
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:27pm Lizardner Dave:

Exxxcelent. Thanks!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:28pm raga:

scott, you shoulda seen the cathedral a few weeks ago when it was painted with light. kinda psychedelic colors too. sharp edge is another pittsburgh noteworthy. OH! and the penn brewery is going away. like, soon.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:30pm dc pat:

oh feck, forgot about the Sharp Edge. Great beer + pizza.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:32pm Cecile:

no, raga! I went to Penn Brewery about 4 years ago and loved it.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:34pm raga:

i know. it sucks. their maibock was TO DIE FOR
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:35pm Cecile:

I even brought glasses home from them in my luggage! Their cold plate was da best!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:37pm Sean Daily:

Speaking of bock... It's 2:40! Time for a beer!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:38pm Patrick:

creepy mix!
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:39pm Scott:

Only been to the Church Brewworks - great saison the night I was there! I bought a glass, a growler, and a tripel. The glass was smithereens in a matter of days.
  Thu. 1/8/09 2:40pm dc pat:

Hey, if you're ever in Harrisburg, PA, go to ABC brewery. The beer is fan-freakin-tastic.

Sigh. Pat, I spent a few years in H'burg in the summer of '81. If only they'd had something like ABC in those days. Is it in town, or out at one of the malls?

Been to the Church Brew Works twice, thought the beer was pretty standard brew pub fare (that's not a bad thing..) but thought the food was far above average compared to lots of other brewpubs I've been to.

Jeeze I grew up in Mechanicsburg across the river. I was in high school in 81. It's on Cameron street right in Harrisburg. Appalachian Brewing Company.

HI Lizardner Dave - i'd actually say the opposite, thought the grub was pretty standard, as far as brewpubs go. Good, but not great. That saison was fabulous, and also made for a great mussels recipe a few days later.
