January 5, 2009: Cowboys of the Hardwood
Extend the holidays. Some of this musict I found when Abbie (my home-from-college son) & I rebuilt our sound system and we sorted piles of CDs. Some I heard on XM Radio, flying back from Florida last week. A few were holiday gift CDs or flea market buys or hot tips from friends.
I'm particularly excited about my new four-CD box —“Progressions: 100 Years of Jazz Guitar” on Sony-Legacy—which begins with Vess Ossman doing “St. Louis Tickle” in 1906 and includes recent work from Bill Frissell and others, with much in between. The newest CD from Austin radio station KGSR includes live tunes from Carolyn Wonderland and others. I also got a neato BBKing box and lots more. And don’t forget our roundball set, with Garry Krinsky’s tribute to the Boston Celtics, Cheech & Chong’s “Basketball Jones” plus Brother Bones doing “Sweet Georgia Brown”
I’m on next week and I saved stuff from a nice Studio One reggae collection, my tribute to recently dead faves (Davy Graham, Nick Reynolds of Kingston Trio, Odetta), and esp. John Boutte’s “Good Neighbor” CD, hot new stuff from New Orleans. Get in touch with comments, suggestions, jokes at stevek@wfmu.org.

| Big Guitars from Texas | Bulldoggin' Boogie | |
| Eddie Bush | Clowin' the Frets | Listed as Eddie Bush & The Los Angeles Biltmore Trio, names unknown. Recorded 1928 for Okeh, now on the 100 Years of Jazz Guitar box. |
| Gabor Szabo | Gypsy Queen | This 1966 number was recorded in Englewood Cliffs, NJ, and produced by Bob Thiele. Musical help from Ron Carter, Chico Hamilton, Willie Bobo, etc. |
| Toumani Diabate | Jarabi | |
| Lito Barrientos y Su Orquesta | Cumbia en Do Menor | from "Arriba la Cumbia" (Crammed Disc, 2008) |
| El Combo Los Galleros | Tabaco Mascao | another hot number from "Arriba La Cumbia!" |
| Made in Mexico | Mundo 2 | The album in "Guerillaton" on Skin Graft (2008) and it's interesting and odd |
| Made in Mexico | Yes We Can | "You Are A Donkey" |
| Manteca | Afro Funky | The CD is "Ritmo & Sabor" from mid-70s, not sure what else other than it swings |
| Omara Portuondo w/ Chico Buarques | O Que Sera | A little Spanish, a little Portuguese-- and a Brazilian flavor from this Cuban singer, one of the Buena Vista Social Clubbers; new CD is "Gracias" (WorldVillage, 2008) |
| Buena Vista Social Club | El Cuarto de Tula | Live at Carnegie Hall |
| Dave Soldier | Casamineto de los Apaches | from "Yol K'u: Mayan Mountain Music (MUlatta, 2008) |
| BB King | Gambler's Blues | Live recorded in Chicago, from 1967 album, "Blues is King"-- now on CD on MCA. |

| Fabulous Thunderbirds | Extra Jimmies | Jimmie Vaughn plays mean guitar |

| The Skeletons | It's The Little Things | I just love this band; are they still around? I know they were from Missouri but I saw them at Maxwells years ago. Wow. This Sonny Bono cover is just great |
| Harvey | Anyway You Wanta | One of Mad Mike's Monsters |
| Saxons | Camel Walk | I've played this many times before but isn't it irresistible? Yoytrepek. |
| Neil Young | Intro to Sugar Mountain | Live at Canterbury House 1968, now on CD on Reprise |
| Neil Young | Sugar Mountain | There's an ad in the CD cover for the show, offering "free eats". |
| Garry Krinsky | Cowboys of the Hardwood | A tribute to the Boston Celtics from my brother; check out his website-- garrykrinsky.com-- for more from this fine upstanding talented fellow. |
| Cheech & Chong | Basketball Jones | Great lines: "That basketball was like a basketball to me" & "I've got more moves than x-lax". Thanks listeners. |
| Brother Bones & His Shadows | Sweet Georgia Brown | Theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters |
| Robbie Fulks | I Told Her Lies | Robbie Fulks is one of the best around these days. Members of the Skeletons (did I mention that I love this band) help him out on “South Mouth”—his 1997 album for Bloodshot |
| Gary Stewart | Whiskey Trip | Always sad to hear this guy, one of the best. I listened to him on an airplane coming back from Florida last week and he sounded so good at 30,000 feet! |
| Junior Brown | Coconut Island | Your leaving work and I'm in a honky tonk mood. |
| Charlie Louvin | Wreck of the Old 97 | My live story: "Hey Steve, you're way behind time" |
| World Famous Blue Jays | Cookin' with Jay | |
| Reno & Adcock | Earl's Breakdown | |
| Merle Haggard | I Think I'll Just Stay Here & Drink | Last one, I promise. (But listen to these guys play) |
| Louis Moholo-Moholo with Marilyn Crispell | Moment of Truth | Louis Moholo was a member of the Blue Notes, the superb South African combo who moved to Europe in the 60s. He has been making great music since then and this new CD is no exception. |
| Sidney Pinchback | Soul Strokes | I ran across this tune on a Mojo collection called Soul Riot" (August, 2001). The magazine had a long article on Sly Stone plus a 21-song CD, including this instrumental version of Syl Johnson's "Different Strokes" |
| Millie Jackson | It Hurts So Good | A tough song, also from the Mojo Mag CD |
| Delbert McClinton | Hold On to Your Hiney | There was a time, back in the 80s, when I thought this guy put on the best live shows ever. I hope he's till hangin' in there. Check out a couple of great interviews he did at fmu with Glenn Jones. |
| Sue Foley | Howlin' for My Darlin' | |
| Tim Hardin | Don't Make Promises | I heard Tim Hardin at the Club 47 in Cambridge in the 60s, back when I was a kid. His first album is now out on CD on Water Records |

| Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou | Mi Ni Non Kpo | |
