A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Listener comments!

  9:04am
dc pat:

I had a dream this morning about Paul Simonon talking about the neighborhood where he grew up and in the background Bernie Rhodes said "Punk rock is just a world class bath room." What do you suppose he meant?
  9:05am
scott:

good morning trouble!
  9:08am
GP:

Morning everyone.
DC, uh, let me think on that one a bit.
  9:08am
annie:

  9:10am

  9:11am
JJZ:

Good ol' Nola.

  9:16am
trouble:

good morning!
  9:19am
dc pat:

god I love this song...
  9:19am
JJZ:

At first, I thought this "Tammen Varjossa" song was going to be a synthy version of "Midnight Cowboy."
  9:20am
listener mark:

Good Morning Trouble
Hello everyone
Cool Beans,
Bond,
James Bond
  9:20am
dc pat:

only thing I can think: since any big corporation is dipping into punk to sell their product on tv, punk rock just ends up being a place where rich car execs come to take a dump? I dunno, I'll email Bernie.
  9:21am
JJZ:

Oh, maybe it was "You only live twice."
  9:25am
dc pat:

Midnight Cowboy = You Only Live Twice, same composer
  9:26am
JJZ:

Yeah, and that's why it makes more sense.
  9:28am
GP:

This Scott Walker song sounds like something from a David Lynch soundtrack.
  9:30am
dc pat:

I just hope they put the seat back down in punk rock
  9:35am
dale:

'toilet paper' and 'uncanny' is funny.
  9:35am
GP:

Trouble..that is so punk rock.
c.f.: dc pat's post earlier.
  9:37am
Karnak:

Uncanny

Uncanny, the lack of public toilets in Manhattan.
  9:38am
dale:

look on youtube for mark almond and gene pitney doing "something's got a hold of my heart". so bad it's good.
  9:39am
listener mark:

Nothing says Thursday morning like swedish cowhorns
  9:40am
annie:

  9:41am
dc pat:

  9:44am
lilsis:

  9:51am
lilsis:

HA HA---Only on the important days--
  9:52am
fishmonkeystew:

Goooooood morning Trouble and all!

Havin' a helluva week here in CT. Saw David Byrne play on Tuesday night (phenomenal!) and found out that my yellow Lab, Monk, needs ACL surgery yesterday. Oh the ups and downs.....
  9:54am
C:

Gotta second the Byrne show. I saw him down in Baltimore and it was awesome.
  9:58am
bzul:

Did anyone here go to Battery Terminal bldg. in NY to "play" the building with Byrne's custom riggin'? I wanted to during a double-quick city tag over the summer, but didn't make that stop.
  9:59am
sugarwolf:

when I saw Serge Gainsbourg's grave, it wasn't until a month or so later I realised why there were all those Metro tickets on it.

I did understand the head of cabbage, though.
  10:01am
Bad Ronald:

I did Bzul. It was fun!
  10:03am
fishmonkeystew:

Yeah, I couldn't believe the Byrne show. I saw him at the Calvin Theater in Northampton, MA. Got loads of pics, and got to hear a load of Talking Heads songs live. I never expected that. Take Me to The River, Once In a Lifetime, Heaven, Burning Down the House, amongst others. Waaaaaaay cool. And the theater only held about 900-1000 people. Nice small venue.
  10:04am
trouble:

i did see the byrne show at the terminal building, twice. it was gorgeous and i wrote about it for the WFMU beware of the blog...
  10:05am
bzul:

Many others or a line there, BR? Or did you just walk in, step up/sit down and Create? And it sounded like....?
  10:09am
Bad Ronald:

There was a bit of a line on a Friday. Waited for about 5 - 10 mins. to sit down for 2 to play. It sounded nice. Kinda like a haunted factory. Lots of banging clicking and droning.
  10:11am
Bad Ronald:

Here's a short documentary about it on Boing Boing:

http://preview.tinyurl.com/boingbyrne
  10:13am
johN:

Like sliding down a giant shoe horn into a vat or work in slow motion. I like this song
  10:16am
stingy d:

breeeaaakffaaaaaasssssssst!!!
  10:18am
stingy d:

seriosuly the vermont country store is ruining my life
  10:20am
IntangibleArts:

whoa! This Riles/Cherry bit sounds hauntingly similar to some of Don Cherry's bits in the soundtrack to HOLY MOUNTAIN.... Nice one....
  10:27am
PKNY:

Nice version of "Changes"...happy belated 60th, Ozzy!
  10:27am
GP:

Stingy..I noticed their usual volume of catalogs has slacked off a bit. i think I only received three so far this season.

Trouble, I really like this Susanna song.thanks for that.
  10:30am
IntangibleArts:

...yeh...i meant Riley as well...
  10:31am
jamesie:

youe are on good form today! Loving the Riley, Odetta...
  10:31am
jon:

Thanks for the good sounds this morning, Trouble. Just what I needed!
  10:32am
scott:

Odetta is da bomb!!
  10:33am
Cecile:

Daaaaang, I missed eveyrthing.
  10:34am
jennie:

Rune is lovely...leave it trouble to find these under the radar gems...
reminds me of Mary Lorson's new band with Piano Creeps...
and Sail Alway is the first song I learned...(Matchmaker doesn't count)
geez..I love these distractions...
trouble...hope the toilet seats are down this week and the paper is in it's proper place!
  10:35am
jennie:

susanna Is great...whoa...not rune...oops.
  10:38am
sugarwolf:

Handmade gifts:

UGH I am having ONLY THREE WEEKS to finish my gifts panic.
  10:40am
trouble:

thanks for all the good vibes peeps. HI james!
  10:40am
Cecile:

What are ya making?
I'm a bit in the same boat.
Found some little Xmas stockings that take 45 min to crochet, start to finish. They are saving my carcass.
  10:46am
sugarwolf:

Cecile, I have to make two pairs of socks, but with heavy worsted weight, so they only take a day or two. I have a vest I started for my grandma, but I hate the yarn so much...

I am also making the cat a new fun fur cat bed, and I really don't need to finish on xmas, it's not like he knows.

And I want to finish my Manos: Yarn of Fate sweater for New Years
  10:46am
trouble:

dj icepack is making drawings for everyone on his holiday list. we will zip them into brightly colored frames and away we go. How about spiced pecans, or matching cloth napkins that are super easy to whip up if you have a sewing machine? Books from a used bookstore is also a good "no time" solution
  10:48am
Li'l bobby:

Mornin Truble,
Great show. i, too, have nothing against the chinese, but i try not to by stuff from that country, though that's pretty close being impossible. I'm carving heads for the select few this year.I love spiced pecans.
  10:48am
annie:

and you can always get a bunch of mason jars and fill them with grains and beans for soups and stews.
  10:48am
Your cat:

Oh...cats know..let me tell you...cats know.
  10:49am
Cecile:

I love that, trouble!

Manos, Yarn of Fate sweater? Tell me more.
Agh, sugarwolf, I love making things for others, but it does get a lot harder when the materials are just not to your taste.
  10:49am
sugarwolf:

last year, I kept putting off kntting my grandpa a new pair of bed socks all of November because he was ill, and he died in December.

Used books: I have totally gotten my family books from the free table at the friends of library bookshop.
  10:49am
Jonathan Marx:

Kitty Wells! Singing Dylan! Hell, yes!
Her childhood home stood just a mile from where I'm sitting in my office right now.
  10:53am
scott:

hand made, home made, best made!!!free books are good ,too
  10:53am
Cecile:

LOL! I have regifted both CD reissues pre-"expanded edition" days, and also books.

They are in good condition, so why not?
  10:57am
Cecile:

wow, parchman farm has the rockin' band.
Yeah, they really wanna go back home....
  11:03am
Parq:

This will be my third year of not buying any gifts at all in a big-box or other chain store. Local retailers only. Even after years of mall-ization, NY residents still have that option, thank providence.
  11:03am
sugarwolf:

part of xmas tradition is saying how little we spent on gifts

knitting + subtitles = uh oh
  11:04am
trish:

Some kids I know took some plain plastic lightswitch covers from the hardware store and painted them up for xmas gifts.

Good colours, good abstract- I still have them. I prefer the neutral grey/silver one w/ accent colours over the primary coloured one, but hey that's me.
  11:04am
Cecile:

that's why I watch crime shows or animal planet if there are no dogs on the TV. I can "watch TV through my head" better.

Same here - sugarwolf!
  11:06am
Cecile:

that Vivian Girls song is growing on me. A cross betweern Look Blue Go Purple and the early B-52s. Haunting and rocking.
  11:07am
sugarwolf:

crime shows: ha, all I watch are CSI and Law and Order reruns on TV
  11:10am
Cecile:

I like the true ones, they are weirder.
Although, I now know way too much about PIT manuevers and what color crack makes when you drop it in the testing kit.
  11:15am
Santa Maccabee:

Cecile:

Great seg, Trouble!

Oh, thanks Santa!

Also, this weekend, No Coast Craft-o-rama in Minneapolis - Global Midtown Market from 3-6 Friday, 9-6, Saturday.
  11:16am
jennie:

home made vouchers are awesome too i.e., a picnic in the park, a home made song,( they choose the theme), a movie theme night @ your home with all the trimmings, walk the dogs, a few hours of house cleaning, Ice skating, canoe and cocktails...Integrity is the key word...xj
  11:17am
GP:

LL...cool
  11:18am
Doug:

Sugarwolf - I saw Gainsbourg's grave a couple years ago, as well, and saw the tickets, and cabbage. It was bizarre, and someone was there protecting/tending to it. In Savannah, GA, saw lyricist/singer Johnny Mercer's grave, and his neice was there watering it - she was very nice and full of trivia and info !
His songwriting catalog is staggering.
  11:18am
scott:

I once made xmas cards using cut-outs from retailers ads...some were quite funny!!!!
  11:19am
Jenniqua:

"Goin' back to Cally
Stylin
Profilin'"

I use stylin and profilin all the time. Forgot where I got it from. Thanks for reminding me!
  11:24am
annie:

and we used to create gift tags by cutting up old greeting cards and backing them with white card paper. punch a couple holes in and tie it with ribon or string..
  11:29am
Cecile:

my husband is still using his Edward Gorey page a day calendar for gift tags.
  11:30am
Parq:

Annie, that's a cool idea. I like to use gift bags instead of paper - reusable (and easier - I am kind of a klutzy wrapper). I got a lot of old cards, and I can make gift bags with them. Thanks!
  11:37am
annie:

and i love to wrap gifts with comics!!
  11:38am
trish:

Chocolate truffles are easy to make : http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF8&q=chocolate+truffles+recipe

and/or chocolate rum balls..
  11:41am
Ike:

Someone earlier said "i try not to by stuff from that country [China], though that's pretty close being impossible."

It's very possible. I haven't bought anything made in China since late January, except for some food items, like ginger. Plus, I no longer buy Chinese garlic. Local farmer's market garlic is ten times stronger and tastier, making up for the much higher price.
  11:42am
Cecile:

Me, too, Annie!
  11:43am
annie:

it's great, my kid used to hate it, now he loves it.. he does the same thing now.. and you get to catch up on long ago literature, get a chuckle and can recycle it.. woohoo!
  11:44am
GP:

For all of you non vegans out there, I made a bunch of beef jerky and passed it out at Thanksgiving...It turned out to be awesome Everyone seemed to want more of it. I got the recipe here http://tiny.cc/JerkyRecipe
  11:48am

  11:54am
Cecile:

that's what I used to do when people left the transit agency I used to work for - wrap up their gifts in old route maps!
  11:56am
dale:

initials bb?
  11:56am
Annie:

Hey BR, the 78s have made it to hillsdale, waiting to hear from joe.
  11:56am
GP:

Bad Ronald and anyone else...If you make that recipe..watch it carefully during about the last hour of cooking so it does not get too dried out. I took mine out of the oven just as the last bits of moisture disappeared. I also turned it more frequently...maybe about 5 or 6 times.
  11:57am
Cecile:

good to know GP. I am so tempted to make some!
  11:59am
Bad Ronald:

tx agin GP. I noticed that she mentioned that her first batch turned out to be beef crackers.
