Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Hey Evan!...that Captain Sensible record is great, but the B-side is for fans! Ditto Comsat Angels and Flock of Beagles. And Larry Graham. And Girls AT Our Best And The Teardrops--maybe Passionate Friend or The Great Dominions off of that?
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:11pm
efd:
thanks john, thanks madi! John, do you mean "for fans" in a good way?

Laurie:
The Teardrop Explodes, The Plimsouls, the dB's, Girls at Our Best! I wish I had more time to spend at the Record Fair. I wanted to look for more pop stuff but could only devote a little time looking through French stuff. And buying French stuff and records with naked ladies on the cover.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:14pm
john:
Depends if you're a fan! It's a Damned version of Stars on 45, more or less. A medley anyway. I think it's fun, but I'm a fan.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:15pm
timotato:
This Wondermints song sounds so much like Jellyfish.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:15pm
Laurie:
My favorite record fair find to date: The Golden Dawn - George Hamilton's Dead 7" on Sarah Records. I played the B-Side on my listener hour.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:17pm
john:
i Heard you play that! I'm still two singles away from a complete run on Sarah. Grrr.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:24pm
efd:
John, that's pretty much what I figured it was (and why I bought it)! That will be coming up during the listening party for sure. Laurie, is there a playlist posted anywhere for your listener hr?
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:27pm
timotato:
Is the Association LP the one with "Windy"? .I haven't heard Andrea True's "What's your name..." in awhile.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:27pm
Laurie:
Yes, there is: http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/29066

Tue. 10/28/08 11:31pm

Shriekback lined up | |

Tue. 10/28/08 11:34pm
Laurie:
Who else is singing along to this one?
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:35pm
Joe:
Whoaaa what is this here. Hmm... My pick is gonna be that NME 7". Whichever side has the Stenski on it.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:36pm
efd:
timotato, no on "Windy" - it's their first LP, before any of their hits I'm pretty sure. Sports, Andrea True, Shriekback, Steinski - check
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:38pm
~L:
Hi EFD, I'm requesting the DB's off your impressive list. Does the station have any record cleaner handy?
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:40pm
efd:
yes, we are equipped with the latest in 1980s Discwasher record cleaners. Without the liquid solution, however.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:43pm
Joe:
Speaking of cleaning records: http://www.comics.com/comics/pearls/archive/pearls-20081026.html I read it on the last day of the record fair and thought it was extremely appropriate.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:44pm
kramer:
I believe the empty discwasher bottle I have only ever contained distilled water, which is easily replacable.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:46pm
Thunderclap Jimmy:
I vote for the Q-Tips. I also know where I can get some home brewed record cleaning solution if you need any. Getting it across state lines could be a problem though with that pesky sheriff always breathing down my neck.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:47pm
efd:
so you would not recommend using the windex that's in here, then.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:48pm
Kramer:
A good alternative to discwasher is 1200 grit sand paper. It's especially effective on michael bolton and celine dion disks (vinyl or CD).
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:51pm
0rich:
The Vapors !! | |
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:52pm
Joe:
Oh, yeah second on that. Missed that one.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:53pm
Blues fan:
is it possible to get obama on your show to spin some records
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:56pm
Joe:
Also, Poopshovel. Just because the only bit of information on them is that they at one point worked with a producer named "Biff Blumfumgagnge." Cannot make that shit up. And don't try to tell me you picked that record up for any other reason besides the title.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:56pm
efd:
Blues fan: no, definitely not possible. Hi 0Rich! Still waiting for that east coast tour! Vapors will be coming up. QTips also, tclap jimmy
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:58pm
derg:
do any of these 7" covers look like crusty, badly recorded punk? if so, I'd like to hear those album covers sing.
|
Tue. 10/28/08 11:59pm
Kramer:
poopshovel if that disk contains 'Dragon attack' Also, apparently discwasher isn't distilled water, or dirty water nor dish water. It's de-ionized water. So just put a little Jersey City tap into you Ronco home de-ionizer, then start washing those disks.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:01am
derg:
this will work. | |
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:01am
efd:
that poopshovel record makes me nervous, language-wise.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:01am
Marcelo:
Glad It's All Over by Capt. Sensible!!!! a Classiccccc nice collection Evan,
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:03am
efd:
uh-oh, dueling Captain Sensible/Damned requests!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:03am
Joe:
pfft, its after midnight. You'll be cool.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:04am
Lupica:
Oh jeebus, you bought the Poopshovel LP? Play "Ouija Board" or "Young People in Love are Hardly Ever Hungry" -- both solid tunes, though the latter is an instrumental.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:09am
0rich:
efd, planning a trip in that direction next year, but to make it that far we'll have to get creative(r)
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:11am
0rich:
dymaxion! | |
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:14am
zephir:
My spine is the bass line by shriekback plz
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:14am
efd:
Mike, "bought" is probably too strong a word. It was practically forced on me by, coincidentally, our logo contest winner. It was all I could do to get him to accept even a dollar for it.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:16am
efd:
(but thanks for the pointer to radio-friendly tunes!)
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:19am
efd:
Joe, we do not speak of such things in public!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:20am
Sybil:
Good evening, all! (Can I still say that after midnight?) Great show to come back to. I'm loving these new finds. And Mike, if you're still around - two shows in three days, wow! Be still my heart!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:21am
Joe:
You know, I realized it was probably a bad idea as soon as I said it. All apologies. Thanks for the edit.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:21am
efd:
hi Sybil! long time no... uh... read!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:36am
john:
Well, it definitely has a BTO feel to it, unless it's Grand Funk; have to see if i can work it in to tomorrow's note somehow! Looking forward to closing out the longest campaign since the Peloponnesian War with the show next week.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:39am
timotato:
Yeah, the singer has a BTO sound alright. The guitarist, though, has southern rock riffs ... maybe The Outlaws... mixed with the Chicago rock groove... REO Speedwagon possibly.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:40am
efd:
yeah, i'm pretty happy with that Raw Deal purchase! Dante's Inferno, on the other hand...
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:43am
john:
Never heard this before but this one's all about the lyric...kind of a more explicit YMCA
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:43am
Joe:
Hey don't be too hard on it. It's pretty... funky. I guess. What made you pick up that Raw Deal 7"?
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:45am
efd:
the thing is, this is far and away the best song on the album. Other songs on the album: a 7:30 cover of "Could This Be Magic" and a poorly discofied version of "Brand New Key."
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:46am
efd:
Raw Deal was purchased solely because of the BTO comparison. The dealer said if I didn't like it I could bring it back next year for a full refund, but it's a keeper!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:48am
Joe:
And its apparently the only thing they ever released. I gotta start buying 7".
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:51am
Kramer:
The Cap'n is scaring me with this smash it up mash up.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:52am
efd:
just got around to checking out that Pearls Before Swine link, Joe - awesome.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:53am
john:
Evan, I bought a few singles from Chuck too, but no unknown quantities, a couple old Monochrome Set 45s and a Magazine. Oh, and this is what I meant when I said this B-side was for fans only...
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:54am
efd:
well if we weren't all fans before, we certainly are now after hearing that!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 12:56am
Paul Elliott:
Enjoying the show here in sunny Melbourne Australia. Wondered if you had the new Grace Jones album to play a track off?
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:01am
HR:
a POX on you for playing the disco version of The Damned.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:04am
john:
Dont' quote me on it, but I think that Sports single was quite good, though I can't imagine I've heard it in 25 years.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:05am
zephir:
thanks! Ugh! I walked away for a few minutes and missed the song I requested! D'oh. I'll have to hit up that archive.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:06am
efd:
just finished cuing up the Sports! HR, maybe that'll help offset the disco Damned.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:09am
Joe:
This is _great_. I suggest opening next week's show with it. Maybe every week's show.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:09am
Joe:
Fuck, they should put it on the next FMU bumpersticker.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:10am
efd:
hi Paul, didn't see the Grace Jones in the new bin tonight but thanks for checking in from Australia!
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:11am
john:
I think the Sports were Australian, and always got a raw deal for sounding like Joe Jackson, only better. That's everything I ever remember about them.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:13am
Joe:
I was just thinking the guy sounded like Joe Jackson! Man, that sucks for them.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:15am
efd:
funny you mention Joe Jackson, that reminded me there was another record I picked up from Chuck Warner that he described as "Joe Jackson pub-pob" ... ah, here it is, stand by
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:17am
Sybil:
Remarkably Joe Jacksonish.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:18am
efd:
Joe, I'm afraid I'm going to deny your Steinski request... the song on that EP is "The Motorcade Sped On" and I think that would just give me the creeps right now.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:19am
Kramer:
Not an uncommon song construction and singing style for that era.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:19am
Paul Elliott:
Sports were a pretty big band here many years ago, saw the old lead singer Steve Cummings do an acustic set at the back of a record store a few weeks back
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:20am
Joe:
Its cool, I got that on MP3. And yeaaaaaah that is creepy.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:23am
Kramer:
NuMusik straight lines and On Islands in glorious 10" vinyl. Why am I still holding onto this disk.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:31am
Joe:
Hey good pick on the Shakey Hands! I'm seeing them in like 2 weeks at Mercury.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:34am
Sybil:
Well, this is certainly... different.
|
Wed. 10/29/08 1:35am
Joe:
