Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - October 21, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:09pm From: Joe

I'm going to assume that wasn't The Bishops, the UK indie band, and was instead The Bishops, a far more obscure and awesome band that I haven't heard of.

I have a feeling there's going to be alot of that tonight. Educate me, Davies!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:13pm From: The Mansfield Mauler

Must be real vinyl-- I heard a skip! Thanks for keeping your promises EFD!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:14pm From: Joe

And he pulled off a real-live drop-in! I am not getting any work done tonight.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:15pm From: E.L.

Let's shake these post-sox blues with some EFD mayhem!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:20pm From: john

Ready for Waugh? Ohhh.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:21pm From: efd

hi everyone, I'll probably be too frantic to do a lot of commenting tonight but don't let that stop you! Thanks for tuning in!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:21pm From: listening john

can EFD talk any faster!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:24pm From: john

We'll do our best to pick up the slack. Gives me three hours where I'm not thinking about margins of error, so I owe you that much. Great set, btw. Singles are so doggone cool.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:26pm From: Joe

We could just slag the Rays for 2 1/2 hours.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:26pm From: E.L.

This has got to be like making a live mix tape, while writing out the artist, song, album, etc. Thanks EFD.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:28pm From: john

That'll just get the Rays riled. Similarities between 2008 Rays and 1969 Mets abound...whoa, the Selecter!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:29pm From: Joe

Hey, I might be showing my age... but whats the Hurrah?

Tue. 10/21/08 11:32pm From: randy in NC

Hurrah, a club that was big in the late '70's early '80's. It was uptown near Lincoln Center.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:32pm From: efd

Hurrah was the best club in NYC in 1979ish-early 80s. it was up near Lincoln Center- saw a ton of great shows there in my college days.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:33pm From: john

Irrelevantly, also the name of one of the best (and most unjustly forgotten) English jangle-pop bands of the 80s. Never played at the club of the same name, sadly, I believe.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:34pm From: Joe

OH cool so it's like The Fillmore at Irving Plaza now?

... kidding, kidding...

Tue. 10/21/08 11:35pm From: efd

watch it, Joe, you're thisclose to being banned for making that comparison!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:35pm From: randy in NC

Except Irving Plaza was Irving Plaza then...

Tue. 10/21/08 11:36pm From: Amanda

Again I will say: I missed WNYU's golden years, which have to have been 1978-81. Yay XTC! Yay war-themed 7"s (instead of actual war)!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:36pm From: Andrew in Midland Park

Generals and Majors - still so relevant - Black Sea, amazing compilation - "perfect album side"

Tue. 10/21/08 11:37pm From: Rob

Appreciate the tickets for the Urinals last week, efd. Had a blast at the knitting factory.

Also, if you want to drop that Joe kid, you have my full endorsement.
... kidding, kidding...

Tue. 10/21/08 11:40pm From: john

two pints of lager and a packet of crisps please

Tue. 10/21/08 11:46pm From: Michael on the left coast

Delta Five!!! Rockin'
Sadly it's not "You"

Tue. 10/21/08 11:48pm From: E.L.

Let's not pick on Joe. That's Age-ism. Keep rocking, Joe.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:49pm From: Michael on the left coast

TRB!!!
How about Kimberley Rew?
Or The Motors?
Or The Higsons?
Or (inside reference) The Cosmopolitans?

Tue. 10/21/08 11:49pm From: Michael on the left coast

TRB!!!
How about Kimberley Rew?
Or The Motors?
Or The Higsons?
Or (inside reference) The Cosmopolitans?

Tue. 10/21/08 11:50pm From: Joe

I'm trying, I'm trying. Apparently I was just born 15 years too late.

Stupid gentrification, ruining everything before I got to show up...

Tue. 10/21/08 11:51pm From: Joe

It's not THAT inside! It's on his wikipedia page!

Take THAT old people!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:53pm From: john

i'm surprised, but there's only overlap so far with two 45s on my shelves--looks like we were buying at the same time, too I'll put the over/under at seven. Haven't heard this in a while!

Tue. 10/21/08 11:53pm From: Meth Dealer

hey Evan my man.....how did that bag you picked up this afternoon work out? Remember only do a little at a time.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:53pm From: Michael on the left coast

Any Spizz there Evan?
Nice to see Hurrah name checked here.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:55pm From: efd

yes to Spizz and Higsons - K. Rew and Motors I only have on LP, so not here tonight.

I have a Wikipedia page?

Tue. 10/21/08 11:57pm From: Joe

Tue. 10/21/08 11:58pm From: Amanda

Whoa! It's got your birth year, too, right at the top... heh

Tue. 10/21/08 11:58pm From: Joe

Oh, and now it says you're the BBC economics correspondent.

And all this time, I thought that Masshole accent.

Tue. 10/21/08 11:59pm From: Rob

"Evan is also the BBC economics correspondent"?

-well done

Tue. 10/21/08 11:59pm From: Joe

Wed. 10/22/08 12:01am From: john

Wed. 10/22/08 12:03am From: Joe

Wed. 10/22/08 12:04am From: Terre T

Wed. 10/22/08 12:05am From: efd

Wed. 10/22/08 12:07am From: Terre T

Ok, there's no way yer doin this ALL yerself... who's yr Ass Prod, Davies??!?!?

Wed. 10/22/08 12:08am From: Joe

Hey, what Evan does in his free time is nobody's business!!

Oh... you're talking about something different.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:08am From: efd

i'm here all by myself, i swear! i've got witnesses.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:09am From: Charles

Yes, who is your ass prod Evan?

Wed. 10/22/08 12:09am From: john

Saw ultravox at the Agora in West Hartford in '82 or 83. Better live than one might have feared.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:11am From: efd

saw them at the aforementioned Hurrah in 1981, i think - right after Midge Ure joined. i thought they were great!

Wed. 10/22/08 12:13am From: john

yeah, i approached it with some trepidation though i loved the records, just because some synth-heavy bands kind of sucked live. fantastic show, though! Think you saw them a tour or two before me.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:15am From: Marcelo

oh, two heavies on the WFMU, Evan and Terre T...
a South American punk special please, there are people on the villas and favelas doing music.....
thanx efd

Wed. 10/22/08 12:20am From: Joe

This is hands down the most -fucked up- Tina Turner song I have ever heard, in my life.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:21am From: john

and you said that before the "great googa mooga" bit

Wed. 10/22/08 12:26am From: Joe

Sorry Ev, Irene beat you to "Everybody's Happy" on monday. She played the Moodies too! I should start catching her show more regularly.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:28am From: E.L.

It's not a race, Joe.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:29am From: efd

i fought Irene, and Irene won

Wed. 10/22/08 12:33am From: matt

wow an evan singles show! great....meaning maybe you have actually brought in that old chestnut 'homocide' by 999?
id love to hear that.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:38am From: Michael from the left coast

And I thought it was Bruce Woolley

Wed. 10/22/08 12:38am From: efd

ooh, sorry Matt, i left that at home - i felt like i'd played some other 999 tracks fairly recently so i didn't bring anything by them tonight.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:38am From: efd

heh, good one Michael

Wed. 10/22/08 12:43am From: matt

i got it just now. the name-999.
999 as opposed to 666?
i'm on fire.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:44am From: Michael from the left coast

Did you bring the Cyclones with you by chance? Been a long long time since I heard "You're So Cool"

Wed. 10/22/08 12:44am From: efd

Matt, you give me too much credit!

Wed. 10/22/08 12:45am From: efd

no Cyclones- i played that when I had the Individuals on in August, so i left that at home too.

i overthink this stuff, don't i.

Wed. 10/22/08 12:48am From: eenie

how about "this is love" by the gist? while you're playing all my favorite songs from from 1982...

Wed. 10/22/08 12:49am From: randy in NC

I saw the Specials at Hurrah's

Wed. 10/22/08 12:55am From: efd

Wed. 10/22/08 1:00am From: efd

Wed. 10/22/08 1:02am From: MArcelo

ohhh Stephanie Nuttal (from Manicured Noise) lived here till 1982!!!!! she plays drums on Sumo -a cult band here- thanks for this song!!!!!!

Wed. 10/22/08 1:05am From: Michael from the left coast

Actually the Specials Hurrah show referenced above was broadcast on the late lamented WPIX--not WLIR.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:05am From: Joe

I much prefer to D.A.N.C.E.

That girl grew up to be hottttt, though.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:05am From: randy in NC

efd, I don't recall

That would be cool to hear though.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:06am From: efd

Marcelo, very cool about Stephanie from Manicured Noise - I had no idea! Michael, thanks for the radio station correction.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:07am From: Michael from the left coast

Wed. 10/22/08 1:08am From: dave

Wed. 10/22/08 1:12am From: Joe

you know what, Dave, you got me.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:12am From: john

always a guilty pleasure of mine back in the proverbial day, altered images

Wed. 10/22/08 1:13am From: efd

tt, guilty as charged - although i stepped on the vocal, in classic efd fashion

Wed. 10/22/08 1:17am From: efd

Wed. 10/22/08 1:18am From: efd

Wed. 10/22/08 1:23am From: efd

i'm bored.

;)

Wed. 10/22/08 1:24am From: Joe

Thats not helping your "I'm not on speed" argument, Davies.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:26am From: Michael from the left coast

Indeed a Motor and the best song released by any of them.
I saw Bram perform this at a taping of the Robert Klein Radio show in RCA studios in Times Square in 1981. Klein still talks about this show because the other guest was Rush who were playing Madison Square Garden and who answered all of Klein's questions in the interview segments with one word answers. They were the worst. Made me hate them even more.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:30am From: joey

wow, all 7'' 's!! im a bit jealous! i used to have a huge record collection..but in me mid twenties (now in me late 30's) i went thru a mid life crises and sold everything..all my records, books..etc..now that im re-demosticated..i hope to collect all the albums i had and then some (impossible in some cases) oh btw..if any 'noise' enthusiasts out there have records from the band A Band..give me a call...sorry if i was off topic.. =)

Wed. 10/22/08 1:33am From: Marcelo

yes, its an incredible 7 inch collection evan!!!! incredible show!

Wed. 10/22/08 1:39am From: joey

I wish you would let us download this..this would be the best "mixtape" to give a friend or lover!!...maybe i should learn how to hack?? LOL ..thats it..bye! P.S. i wasnt able to send me last post due to the extremely difficult math question...=(

Wed. 10/22/08 1:42am From: Joe

If I ever met a girl I thought I could give a mixtape like this to, I'd marry her.

My girlfriend only listens to musicians she wants to have sex with.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:43am From: efd

and those musicians include...?

Wed. 10/22/08 1:47am From: Joe

Right now its alot Jack Johnson, and the Kooks. Fiona Apple. She was into Refused and some cool punk in high school, or so she claims.

Though I did get her to start listening to the Muslims, but then again, their lead singer is kind of a cutie pie.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:50am From: Joe

Of course, if she runs off with him, I'm going to blame you for turning me on to that Extinction single.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:51am From: john

about time someone played the a-side!

Wed. 10/22/08 1:52am From: John

You guys know where I can buy these off the interwebs? I don't live in the US

Wed. 10/22/08 1:54am From: Joe

Mail me a check and I'll go to the record fair for you. Euros, please.

Wed. 10/22/08 1:58am From: John

Very funny Joe! I live in Puerto Rico=American Dollar=as broke as anyone else..

Wed. 10/22/08 1:58am From: efd

thanks for staying up late and listening/commenting, everyone! see you at the fair (on Sunday, at least)

Wed. 10/22/08 1:58am From: john

"smooth talkin, brainwashin never gonna give me what i need"

Evan, you've outdone yourself, srsly. Great show!

Wed. 10/22/08 1:59am From: john

You'd be more broke in Euros or Sterling than the U.S. Peso...

Wed. 10/22/08 2:00am From: Joe

Give the man a hand! *applause*

I'm gonna picture you collapsing and someone throwing a cloak over you, Elvis style.

Go ice your fingers down or something. Great show!

Wed. 10/22/08 2:17pm From: laura

Hey, if comments are welcome even after the show, I would just like to say I can't stay up late enough to listen live but DAMMIT I USED TO BE ABLE TO and this particular show takes me right back. In fact efd's is my favorite oldies program.

Ouch.

And had I actually been awake last night I would have requested A Blind Dog Stares, which I distinctly remember the youthful efd playing on WNYU in the 17th or 18th century, if memory serves.

Mon. 11/10/08 1:59pm From: lou demonte

wow!!! Bill Nelson, I thought I'd never hear him on the radio. Now how about a little Red Noise please...
thanx
