Every show starts with a cut from the ‘70s: Rediscovering the forgotten rockers, revisiting the once-hated disco beats, replaying the power-pop favorites. Next: copious amounts of new releases and occasional live bands. Also: I’m the biggest Nick Gilder fan on WFMU.

Listener comments! | |

Tue. 9/2/08 11:05pm
Sybil:
Good evening all! Sorry to miss last week. I'm watching a very interesting game now, mmmm-hmmmm, yes it is.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:06pm
Sybil:
Oops, forgot to say: Brownsville Station yeah!
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:08pm
efd:
hi Sybil! missed you last week. Some game tonight!
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:09pm
john:
Hi from LA again! Still don't have Dodger tix yet, though I'm going to see the Angels in a week or two. Sybil, what game is that? Got the Mets on the intertubes here. And I was going to say "yeah" too!
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:11pm
Sybil:
I have a number for you: 1700! I mean, 1701! Manny is up to 1701 RBI, (HR 30 for the year too) and, wow, Angel Berroa went to catch a ball and it ended up in his shirt. And... something else happening I can't talk about...
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:18pm
john:
my hotel's too hip to have the dodger station on the cable. These guys get on my nerves sometimes. Dodger fans big issues are still being 2 games under .500 and Jeff Kent's dissing of the blessed Vin Scully.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:19pm
efd:
Angels, Schmangels! You've gotta get on those Dodger tix! Sybil, is the "something else" baseball related??
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:20pm
teddy:
fuck yes comsats | |
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:20pm
Sybil:
OK, so why I missed last week: I simultaneously thought it was both Tuesday (because, for instance, I knew I didn't have to teach) and Monday (don't know why, but I was convinced of it when I thought about WFMU). So I heard Hillary's speech but then decided it was Monday. Holding two mutually contradictory ideas in ojne's head at the same time was, I believe, Scott Fitzgerald's definition of genius. Just call me Zelda.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:22pm
Sybil:
Yes, the something else is baseball-related.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:25pm
john:
I'm working on it---Dogs just got back in to town after 10 days on the road. I'll get there, I swear! Keeping an eye on that something else too, as soon as the Mutts give up their lead in the 10th.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:26pm
efd:
Glad you liked that, Teddy! Zelda, I know the absence of Tom Scharpling threw at least one regular off last week, so you were not the only one who was confused. For whatever that's worth.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:26pm
efd:
re "something else" - now I've got it. In the Dodgers game?
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:27pm
Sybil:
Yeppers. Ol' Vin is doing a superb job not talking about it, too.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:29pm
runtwzrd:
i found you again thank god i crashed and forgot the call leters but went to the jessy gress web page
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:31pm
runtwzrd:
some long and forgotten 60 nazz or todd rundgren please
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:31pm
Sybil:
Oh, foo. I went out to get some water and they got a hit. No, I don't really think it's my fault. I don't.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:34pm
runtwzrd:
mets 6 to 5 over twins lets go mets
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:35pm
john:
it was a trademark issue, actually. Comsat is a satellite telecom company. Preferred classic rock, apparently.

Tue. 9/2/08 11:38pm
john:
Yeah, I had it on. Lieberman's speech stank. Kept telling the crowd he's a Democrat. I'm from Connecticut. He ain't.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:39pm
Laurie:
Culture Club INCLUDING Boy George? Oh wow!
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:40pm
Sybil:
I can only take so much suckitude in a day. And there was baseball to be watched.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:40pm
Droll:
I lost track of how many Filthy 15 were that list! Near clean sweep on Paisley Park!

Tue. 9/2/08 11:46pm
Pete:
EFD: Listener Pete here. If you have The Pranks "Modern Communication" CD in the New Bin (you should as Belock played a song last week), Would appreciate if you could play the title track "Modern Communication" More Power Pop in a great year for Power Pop releases. Thanks! Pete
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:48pm
listener jeremy:
first time listener to this show. really enjoying the potpourri
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:49pm
john:
You know, they give me four freaking ESPN channels (roughly 10% of the total channels available), two big-ass HDTVs, and I can't get the damn Dogger game. Suitably jangly guitars make it all better, though.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:49pm
efd:
definitely not your fault Sybil, you followed the rules. Who was throwing it? Pete, that might have been Joe's personal copy as I don't recall seeing that CD when I went through the new bin earlier.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:51pm
Sybil:
Clayton Kershaw pitching, he's about 15 by the looks of him. Well, maybe 17. Good pitcher though.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:51pm
efd:
thanks, Jeremy! John, agreed about Lieberman. If he's a democrat I'm a goddamn Olympic gymnast.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:53pm
john:
Best factoid of the night: By MSNBC's count, Fred Thompson cleared his throat 70 times during his speech, in which he told us John McCain was a POW, in case you hadn't heard. Oh, and admitting that being a POW wasn't a qualification for being president. Oopsie.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:56pm
Sybil:
MLB blackout rules are teh sux. Apparently Donna Brazile said that Thompson gave a "great speech".
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:58pm
roger:
KEITH OBBERMAN IS THE BEST BRAIN ON TV
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:58pm
john:
Great Grandpa Fred, who stayed up through naptime, gave a very good speech, but it was all about McCain's bio. There was nothing in it we couldn't have already known, except the facts he got wrongish. The base would have loved it, but it's been established that the delegates to the RNC are considerably to the right of the party as a whole, if possible.
|
Tue. 9/2/08 11:59pm
Sybil:
Mmmm... brains... | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:02am
john:
i dont' get the game because my hotel doesn't feel like paying for the channel, apparently, and I'm blocked on the video by mlb.com because I'm logging in from LA. Three more weeks, too.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:04am
john:
Plug: Bing and Ruth....absolutely stunning stuff. Live set on Bethany Ryker's show a month or so ago, packed to the brim with multi instrumenntal quasi ambienty wonderfulness.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:14am
efd:
Thanks for the BIng & Ruth plug, John. Sucks that you're in LA and can't even watch the Dodgers games!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:15am
roger:
now would be good time for a "roxy music" song--somebody nudge the dj
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:21am
efd:
appreciate the suggestion, Roger... not sure if I'm feeling the Roxy vibe just now, though; plus I played Bryan Ferry solo a couple of weeks ago.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:23am
roger:
ok--havin fun here!!!!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:27am
Sybil:
Joe Torre taking young Kershaw out now (top of 8th) after 99 pitches, 3 hits, 1 BB (I think). He gets an ovation.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:28am
roger:
does anyone here remember a band from the 70's called "jo jo gunn"
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:31am
roger:
i love ladytron!!!!! | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:35am
efd:
sure, Jo Jo Gunne featured a post-Spirit, pre-"Thunder Island" Jay Ferguson! Sybil, Kershaw just got called back up from the minors, right? I'm pretty sure I saw him in early August but then heard he'd been sent down.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:38am
C:
If Keith makes a request, I'm going to be suspicious.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:40am
Sybil:
Kershaw went down to AAA on the 29th of August apparently. Not for long.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:41am
john:
Kershaw's only 20 and uber-talented. If he can get the walks down, he might become a dominant pitcher. I'm not Sybil, of course, nor would likely ever pretend to be.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:41am
Sybil:
my cat Keith? | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:41am
roger:
i keep getting tagged as someone else on here --please stop--roger is my real name--i am getting mad
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:48am
roger:
oh c ---referred to keith kershaw--whoever that is--sorry i hate baseball
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:49am
Sybil:
OK, I have an important question. Black or Aubergine?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:50am
roger:
why do people like baseball it is meant for rich replublicans--you know the war mongers!!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:51am
Clayton Kershaw:
Oh, I don't have any requests. Whatever efd wants to play is fine with me!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:51am
TERRY:
Is the bed music Cypress hill???
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:53am
roger:
to sybil --iam white--german irish descent
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:55am
roger:
i am leavin here and takin al gore with me--got to protect the al gore
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:56am
Sybil:
Hmm. My question was about shoes. I was, apparently unsuccessfully, trying to ignore roger.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:58am
roger:
sorry-----sybil | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 12:59am
Sybil:
Hogies! | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:00am
Laurie:
TURKEY SO FINE. HOAGIEFEST 4-EVA.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:00am
roger:
shoes my ass--i just re-read transcript!!!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:00am
john:
What's the occasion? Post-Labor Day, after 2am any colors but pastels are OK in the northeast.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:02am
roger:
avoid white | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:03am
roger:
i mentioned white earlier--but i think i got away with it
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:03am
Sybil:
Or hoagies! And roger - I was trying to CHANGE THE SUBJECT. So anyway... black? or aubergine? Violet is also possible, but, I mean, violet...
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:03am
efd:
Sybil, I don't think we have enough info to answer the question!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:05am
C:
After spending some time in Mass. for Labor Day, I have to say that they have the best "hoagies" in the country. (Unfortunately not for $2.99 though)
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:05am
john:
Evan's right, as he so often is. Details, darn it!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:06am
john:
Shouldn't it be a grinder in Mass? New England represent!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:07am
Sybil:
I know you don't have enough information. That's what makes it fun. I'm looking at a pair of shoes. They're really cute. But in my size, black costs $13 more than aubergine. Whatever color that is. And about 90% of my wardrobe is black. (I do live in NYC.) So I'm debating.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:07am
efd:
C, I believe you are referring to GRINDERS!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:07am
roger:
i have a hole in my sock--everybody kept drivin through it
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:08am
dc:
Grinder?!? I hardly even know 'er!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:08am
C:
Grinder?? I've always just called them subs.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:08am
Sybil:
See, if I get them in aubergine, I'll have $13 to spend on grinders. It's just that I love the challenge of repeatedly typing "aubergine".
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:10am
john:
Dark purple, like its namesake vegetable? Or you could adjust your shoe size to one where the black is cheaper. Hours of fun with the regional variations of sandwich dialect.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:10am
dc:
What else in your wardrobe goes with aubergine? What else goes with black? Need I say more?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:10am
C:
I do say wicked awesome sometime though. Sybil--it sounds like you've made up your mind. I have no idea what aubergine looks like, but think you should go for it.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:11am
roger:
chat is going over my head---but keep it up--i may learn something
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:13am
roger:
i am being manipulated it seems
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:13am
Sybil:
Aubergine = eggplant, in French.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:14am
efd:
Terry, you're close - the bed music is The Lordz Of Brooklyn.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:14am
C:
So isn't that basically just black?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:15am
john:
this would be where a psych revival oriented show would play Nick Nicely's masterful 1981 track 6B Obergine to help Sybil decide. Fortunately for freedom of conscience, this isn't that show, though I think I need to get out more.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:16am
roger:
no deep purple | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:16am
Sybil:
You would think so, C, but apparently eggplants are a kind of purplish burgundy color where these folks come from. Nothing in my wardrobe matches, but I think I have a bruise that color.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:18am
efd:
there was an art teacher in my high school whose last name was Albergo. Some of the kids used to call him Mr. Eggplant.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:18am
dc:
Mine'r all greeny/yellow. I think women refer to that specific color as "yewww!"
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:19am
john:
The bruise will change color and you'll need to dye the shoes.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:20am
Sybil:
Yes, John, there is that. Or I could keep getting more bruises, a thought which doesn't appeal.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:20am
dc:
...or just bring another purse! duh!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:21am
roger lee nester:
pple are comeing out of the woodwork
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:21am
john:
I think my idea would prove somewhat less traumatic in the long run. Only trying to help.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:26am
Sybil:
OK, if I'm to judge by their myspace page, The Wicked Awesomes are from Edmonton, CA. Or they live there now, or something. I just don't understand the world. What can you count on anymore?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:27am
john:
I'm totally hearing Flamin' Groovies in that high decibels guitar line. Rawk!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:28am
efd:
[makes note for potential segue next week]
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:30am
roger:
thanks efd--GREAT SHOW!!!!!!----love you guys on listener comments
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:33am
roger:
wfmu is the fox news of radio --but that's ok--i drink beer--brought to me by cindy mccain
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:36am
Sybil:
This is wreckless Eric? Interesting.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:37am
roger:
excuse me if she gets poor---someday--i will cry in my beer if i had one
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:38am
efd:
It is! There are some other songs that are more Wreckless Eric-ish than this one...
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:40am
roger:
sybil is overacting --scaring me
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:42am
Sybil:
Well then, my job here is done. ;->
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:42am
roger:
is there a name for what's a wrong with her
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:44am
roger:
love ya sybil---great time here
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:49am
john:
Wouldn't the whole Donuts/Bearclaw thing be funnier if, instead of New Jersey, they claimed to be Danish?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:49am
efd:
Roger, I think you're the only one who is having that reaction.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:52am
Babs:
someone just told me about the astrovan song...how can i hear it?
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:53am
efd:
ha! excellent point, John!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:53am
Sybil:
Speaking of baseball-related songs, which we weren't, Liz Berg played a song called "Sweet Caroline" on her show this week. Except it was in French. And it wasn't the Neil Diamond tune. I kept looking at the playlist in confusion.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:54am
john:
I like this, but it's sort of like a French John Foxx-era Ultravox tribute band. As if the fact that Wreckless Eric and Amy Rigby are now married weren't cognitive dissonance enough.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:55am
john:
Or maybe early Gary Numan. I stand corrected.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:56am
Babs:
guess i need to email | |
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:57am
Sybil:
Babs, you can wait until after the show is over and the archive goes up, and listen to it then.
|
Wed. 9/3/08 1:58am
Babs:
oh thats great! thanks sybil!
|
Wed. 9/3/08 2:05am
efd:
thanks for fielding that question, Sybil - I ran out of time during my show to comment. Babs, if you're still reading - the archive will be posted in the morning, usually by 9am, and then you can click on the link that will appear to the right of the song. (I think that French song should have been called "Caroline Douce," no?)
