Sweet, swirly, sullen, and swoony. Silky, sorrowful, sad, and sugary. Some sensational songs. Spoken, sung, sincere. Sleep, sigh, and spin. Sssss.

June 30, 2008: Fill-in for Irene

Listen to this show: RealAudio

Artist Track Album Label Format Comments Year

Jo Truman  Sdreamings   Sdreamings  Staalplaat  CD    1991
Michael Bentley  Piano Ship (alternate mix)   Wire Tapper 12  the wire (magazine)  CD  This actually was playing in and out and on top and beneath of the Jo Truman piece.  2004
Tara Strawberry  We Silent Machines   cdr made by Tara  Self Released  CD-R    2008
David Byrne  Song For The Trees or I Know Sometimes The World Is Wrong   Like a Girl, I want you to Keep Coming  Giorno Poetry Systems  LP    1996
The Insect  Tropical Insect House   Zoo  Twisted Nerve  CD  Collection of animal themed music on the Twisted Nerve label. "Tropical Insect House" may also be a new dance music craze sweeping Ibiza this summer.
The Poppy Family feat. Susan Jacks  Beyond The Clouds   A Good Thing Lost  What are Records  CD  Just a side note- if you search on this song and artist on youtube, there are amazing videos to see. Those boots!  1996

thorazine shuffle
Souled American  Sonny   Sonny  Rough Trade  CD  Droopy music. Alt cough syrup country. Lil Wayne Newton?  1992
Tarnation  Christine   Mirador  4ad  CD  In honor of the new American Girls doll shop that opened near me in Minneapolis. Hopefully, the dolls of today will haunt in the future as the dolls of the past haunt today.  1997
Peter Blegvad & John Greaves  The Only Song   Unearthed  Sub Rosa  CD  There's something prettily sinister about this song...it's like sugar water torture.  1995
The Special Pillow  Blue Always   Sleeping Beauty  Self Released  CD  In my opinion, a perfect song. Sung by FMU family tree branch Katie Gentile, from the band starring Dan Cuddy, ex of earlier FMU faves Hypno Love Wheel.  2007

Sea sick and swaying.
Bill Wells  Wiltz   you don't need darkness to do what you think is right v/a  Geographic  CD  A little tip- this amazing collection on Stephen Pastel's Geographic label keeps showing up online for around a few dollars or less. I highly suggest picking one up!  2002
Carl Orff  Gassenhauer   the trip v/a  Universal UK  CD  Eclectic and excellent double disc mix curated by Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey of Pulp.  2006
Ann Magnuson  Is This Heaven?   Pretty Songs & Ugly Stories  Self Released  CD  Recent release from former Bongwater starlet (& memorable CBGB FMU benefit performer) Ann Magnuson. She sells these herself- you could pick one up from her and make life better.  2006
Mick Turner / Tren Brothers  Carny   Blue Trees  Drag City  CD  This album from Mick Turner and Jim White (of The Dirty Three) might be my favorite release from these folks. Varied, surreal, dizzying, and melodic.  2007
Helen & Anita Carter  Today   More Michigas From The Airwaves  self made mix  CD-R  From Laura Cantrell's marathon premium compilation...of course you would trust Laura with this kind of music as readily as you would trust The Mayo Clinic for a check up.  2008

Maher Shalal Hash Baz  Sunrise   Blues Du Jour  Geographic  CD
Nara Leao  Marcha de Quarta-Feira de Cinzas   s/t        1971
Dorothy Ashby  Drink   The Rubaiyat Of Dorothy Ashby  Cadette  CD  "Afro-harp" soul sweetness.  1970
High Llamas  Dorothy Ashby   Can Cladders  Drag City  CD  Now we can all imagine what a song by Dorothy Ashby titled "The High Llamas" would sound like.
Aidan Smith  Chapters One to 4   At Home With  Twisted Nerve  CD    2003
Sly & the Family Stone  Somebody's Watching You   Essential      I actually wanted to play the Little Sister (Sly produced, his sister's singing) version but couldn't find it fast enough. Hours after this show I was in Brooklyn dancing to Sly with friends- honestly, if I share one thing with you it's that you should give that a go.

Antony  Afraid / I Fell In Love With A Dead Boy   Black Sessions  No Label  CD-R  From a cdr of Antony of Antony & The Johnsons performing live on the French radio program The Black Sessions. A Nico cover, followed by one of his gems.
Picastro  Tow Truck   Whore Luck  Polyvinyl  CD    2007
June Tabor & Maddy Prior  The Grey Funnel Line   The Silly Sisters  Shanachie Records    Two English folk greats take hold of one of the prettiest traditional folk songs. For a great alternate version, try Denise Roughan (of The 3D's and Look Blue Go Purple)'s feedback laden version.  1976
Band Of Holy Joy  snippet from   Punk Lore  Self Released    Lord knows this band deserves more than a snippet, but for now this is a tiny sample of a voice that precedes a song on their new ep.
Ruth  87 Sundays   Dream Babes Volume Five: Folk Rock And Faithful  RPM  CD  Amazing bit of psyche folk from the 60's...sounds sweet and casual, but listen to the detailed and at times intense lyrics within.  2004

John Zorn  untitled   caged/uncaged (various artists)  Cramps      1993
Christina Kubisch & Fabrizio Plessi  Earth (excerpt)   Two and Two
Carla Bozulich's Evangelista  Hello Voyager   Blue Room  Constellation  CD  I'm not even sure what it means, but "willing but not able to go out and play" sounds like the saddest tragic lyric ever.  2008
July Skies  Southern Orchards   Where The Days Go  Make Mine Music      2003

The Idle Race  Hurry Up John   Back To The Story  Caroline  CD  Brilliant double disc of psyche pop from Jeff Lynne (pre ELO).  1996
The Tall Dwarfs  If I Were You   Under The Influence  Flying Nun  CD  From a double disc set commemorating the 21st anniversary of legendary NZ label Flying Nun, where artists cover other label artists. This is a Straitjacket Fits song covered by The Tall Dwarfs.
Hermine  Torture   The World On My Plates  LTM  CD  From a brilliant retrospective of Hermine (the voice from Flying Lizards, among other things)- covering the Everly Brothers classic Torture (with Lizards members backing her up).
Les Baxtor  Lust   The Passions  Revola  CD  Bas Sheva doesn't exactly go for subtle on the vocals.
Festival  Valentine   Come Arrow Come  Language Of Stone
Christmas  True Soldier Of Love   In Excelsior Dayglo  Big Time  CD  It's a good time to rediscover how great Christmas were.

Essie Jain  Glory   We Made This Ourselves  Ba Da Bing  Vinyl
Kath Bloom/Loren MazzaCane Conners  Thank You   1981-84  Mega    Some of the most beautiful and sad music I have ever heard- everything sounds so pure and true it's almost difficult to listen to unless you meet it emotionally.  1998
Famous Jug Band  A Leaf Must Fall   Wyrd Folk Mix      Such a perfect slice of ethereal mid 60's melancholy...
Erik Pearson & Sonya Hunter  High   self released cdr    CD-R  There is something so crystalline and peaceful about these two harmonizing together. You can tell they are sweethearts!

Waking up on a water slide's tip
Ana D  recordando   Satellite 99 double disc version  Elefant
Laura Barrett  Robot Ponies   Earth Sciences  Phantom  CD    2008
His Name Is Alive  Come To Me   Xmmer    CD  Thanks to His Name Is Alive for handing me a tambourine to play during their gig in Minneapolis!  2007
Thanks for listening, and many cheers to all my friends at the station (Scott, Ken, Brian, Liz, Gaylord, Trouble, etc) for helping set things or just for being who they are. Extra special thanks to the wondrous Irene, purveyor of the finest programming, for allowing me to fill in. Please send any notes via this page and I will be happy to respond. I will most likely fill in again next September. If you would like a reminder when it happens, drop an email and I will do my best to send a note when it's scheduled. Have an amazing summer, everyone!!!!
