Listener comments!

  3:04pm
Foreign Listener K:

Verily, we are naught but pitchers with ears waiting to be filled, as our vessel sails in.
  3:05pm
sugarwolf:

yay Monica!
  3:07pm
Chunky A:

Yo bro
  3:11pm
north guinea hills:

damn monica, awesome set. did i ever tell you that you were the first wfmu dj i listened to when i was in g-ville fl back when wfmu had a tinny stream?.... god, it was literally a decade ago.....

two years later i moved here... thanks!!!!
  3:25pm
Foreign_listener_K:

Not to be pushy about devotion, but Monica was the first WFMU DJ I ever heard - on a 33.6 modem. Playing whale music.

I've been hooked since.
  3:27pm
Sean Daily:

Liking this Noise Ramones, Monica.
  3:30pm
jeanli:

yes to the noise ramones
yes to monica
yes
  3:31pm
monica:

hi there folks! thanks so much for checking in. foreigner listener k and north guinea hills, you're killin' me with fond memories. hope everyone's have a swell week..
  3:34pm
HotRod:

Lovely sounds!
  3:36pm
north guinea hills:

hmmmm..., maybe it was '99, that would have been about the time the lonesome organst came out... i still remembering listening to you at my office at my first job out of college at 9pm by myself...... and remembering, "damn, i clear crowds when i play this shit!"
  4:06pm
Foreign Listener K:

Who doesn't want to listen to hippie whale music? My kids loved it, just like they did the Muslim Gauze which was also a part of the set.

We are talking the freeform Godhead here. But then, I'm spoiled - I found Monica after Janet, the last vestige of freeform at a WHFS successor, disappeared from the ether.

Freeform and a DJ with fantastic taste? - paradise on earth.

And for those who think freeform is freeloading - you do contribute to WFMU, right? Right?

Amen.
  4:09pm
Scott Blake:

MORE! Marching Band. I turned my little computer speakers up as loud as possible for Marching Band "Drill". Please play more of that CD.
  4:10pm
north guinea hills:

i contribute more then i can afford. still nothing but ramen and coor's lite...(and no substances) until at least august. my student loan creditors wish i would sacrifice as much....
  4:12pm
sugarwolf:

I liked the Becoming Roxy Music book. And I found For Your Pleausre on used vinyl last month, yay yay yay.

I wish I had Bryan Ferry dreams!
  4:14pm
north guinea hills:

but i got 2 awesome wfmu cd comps that my friends aleady copied for me....

sucker.... that's me!!! jejejeje
  4:15pm
Foreign Listener K:

No, not coor's lite - really. Either buy some real beer, or spend the money on something worthwhile - bud comes to mind, and not the kind proudly brewed with rice.

I mean, the Belgians brew beer with cherries, but really, do they know what they are trying to acquire?
  4:19pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

everyone wants a good buzz
  4:19pm
monica:

so y'all at the snack machine right about now or what? thanks for the freeform ups Listener K, more marching band to came Blake, Hey Hot Rod, whattup? thanks lovely jeanli, sean d, sugarwolf, chunky A

  4:26pm
Swami:

This song has made me weep copiously since I was a lad.
  4:28pm
Parq:

What a nifty version of P(TMD)! Sort of makes me picture little 6-year-old surfer dudes. Beatniks, maybe.
  4:30pm
north guinea hills:

holy shit, i used side B from tusk to help me get over a breakup 7 years ago... i sense have used the "humming part" of this track for a sample of a minimal techno track, a l a herbert style. tusk, i cry every time.
  4:31pm
north guinea hills:

THANK YOU FOR THE MAC!!!!!!
  4:33pm
HotRod:

YOU'RE WHAT'S UP, MONICA!
  4:35pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

oh my god, is this Scarlett Johanssen?
  4:35pm
phat:

good show today.

Hits the spot.
  4:36pm
Parq:

Oh dang, you beat me to it. One of my all-time tearjerkers is Waits's "Kentucky Avenue", but here you've already played a Waits song. I also get sentimental about any version (including the original) of "Time After Time".
  4:36pm
Negator:

Three sad cry songs:
I thought-Brian Ferry
Strange Fruit-Billie Holiday
Summer Lies-Magnetic Fields
I just wasn't made for these times-Beach Boys
Crown of Love-Arcade Fire
Ok so I thought of more..... Great show Monica!
  4:37pm
Don Pubah:

Two tear-jerkers for me....Wilco's "We're Just Friends" and Sinatra singing "September Song."

Good to have you back, Monica!
  4:37pm
Listener David:

Bruddah Iz's version of Somewhere over the Rainbow
  4:38pm
phat:

Parg, ditto on the "Time After Time"
  4:40pm
Droll:

One of the sweetest songs/performances I've heard is Sarah, by Ween (on Pure Guava). It's 2:11 of impossibly beautiful music for them.
Maybe I'm Amazed (McCartney) also Beatle-Cheese that works on me every time.
  4:41pm
swami:

Waaaaaah! Why?! Waaaaaahhhhh!
  4:42pm
Parq:

DCE, if that was Scarlett Jo singing, I'd hate to think what we'd get if a picture of her got posted.
  4:43pm
frenchee:

"Mad World" by Gary Jules. Sob, slobber, rinse, repeat.
Though that Dusty song nearly broke me!
  4:43pm
phat:

Wow, I wasn't a Percy Sledge fan until now.
  4:44pm
Sean Daily:

Monica, do you have a song from "The Idiot Formerly Known as FOOM" called "Godzilla"? That song always gets the waterworks going on me, for some reason.
  4:45pm
Dominick:

One of my favorite songs. Never heard Percy do his magic to it - nice!
  4:46pm
Negator:

tHE GIRL FROm Ipaneama. is sad too.
  4:46pm
alex d:

Leonard cohen - One of Us cannot be wrong
Leonard Cohen - Stories of the Street (mainly the last line)
Modest Mouse - 3rd Planet

when i was around 8yrs old Sloop John B always made cry.
  4:48pm
frenchee:

"Calling You" by Jevetta Steele--even when it was a telephone commercial I wept like a baby.
  4:50pm
Negator:

Wichita Lineman-sad
  4:50pm
GUMBY:

Funny song, If anyone was a legend in their time beyond The King and The Godfather of Soul it was probably The Man in Black
  4:50pm
Negator:

Midnight Cowboy Theme-sad
  4:50pm
north guinea hills:

zarusthathra damn it! now johnny, are you trying to make me cry today!!! f you monica! (*sniff) f' you (*sob)
  4:51pm
Foreign Listener K:

From a Douglas Wolk show, Frankie Armstrong singing Tam Lin using nothing but her voice, and ending -

...Crying, "Me love I've won, I've won"
Oh crying, "Me love I've won."

And outten spoke the Queen of Elfenland
From the bush wherein she stood
"I should have tore out your eyes Tam Lin
And put in two eyes of wood, of wood
Put in two eyes of wood."

Amazing - certainly gets me.

On the other hand, my son always cried to a German lullabye, called 'La Le Lu' -
La-le-lu
nur der Mann im Mond schaut zu
wenn die kleinen Babies schlafen
drum schlaf' auch du

La-le-lu
vor dem Bettchen steh'n zwei Schuh'
die sind genauso muede
geh'n jetzt zur Ruh'...

He grew out of it, but I doubt that will ever happen to me with that version of Tam Lin.
  4:51pm
Negator:

Dark Globe-Syd Barrett-sad
  4:51pm
Slink:

Hallejuah devastates me (just saw L Cohen in montreal. oh my...humble majesty) also, Slip Slidin' Away (P Simon); Crying (R. Orbison); Condemnation (Dep Mode)

thanks, Monica -- this is...well fun is the not the word. how about good?
  4:52pm

north guinea hills:

  4:55pm
GUMBY:

Ben by Michael Jackson is so sad. Rats really do have nowhere to go, no friends, just other rats. sniff, sniff. Lots and lots of other rats.
  4:56pm
alex d:

yeah hallejuah too, but mostly jeff buckley's cover...a lot of leonard cohen and tom waits do it to me
  4:58pm
Dead Corporate Eyes:

punch-out time, bye bye, have a nice day!
  4:59pm
Don Pubah:

nostalgic tears somehow from Spirit in the Night by the Boss.
  5:00pm
Parq:

"Ben" is about rats?? And all this time, I thought it was about lawyers . . .
  5:03pm
slink:

true, alex. that buckley cover is crushing. but LC takes the crown overall in these matters of melancholy.

: that B Raitt song "can't make you love me" always makes me stop what i'm doing(in the place that's playing lite fm)...to feel sad and wistful. love it.

and speaking of lite FM "everbody's gotta learn sometime" by the korgis. so resigned and sad (and wafting)....
  5:04pm
GUMBY:

rats/lawyers same difference
I love hallejuah for its art & delivery, but I don't find it sad at all. Take your breath away yes, cry no.
  5:05pm
slink:

"send in the clowns," sinatra; "love hurts" nazareth. ok, i'll chill out and just listen now.
  5:07pm
dale:

Yea Jamestown! I'm from WNY....pretty area, financially depressed unfortunately.
  5:07pm
north guinea hills:

(shhh... , former marching band geek....)
  5:07pm
GUMBY:

I heard The Ledge by the Replecements the other day on my headphones and there is one sad song. Even with that pop-pop-pop drum and everything the melencholy seeps through.
  5:08pm
north guinea hills:
