Mehmet Dede of Drom: Music from Turkey and beyond

Hear this show now: Pop-up listen Pop-up player! | Add or read comments

Guest DJ (hours 1 & 2): Mehmet Dede, who books music for the ascendant world-musicky nightspot Drom (85 Ave A in the East Village), new entrants into the cut-throat commercial fracas on the mean streets of Alphabet City. Mehmet spins roots and pop music from his native Turkey and the Mediterranean.

The scene at Drom.

While Drom is especially notable as a downtown a gateway for new European roots-oriented bands as well as a new downtown hub for the local Balkan roots scene, its booking is extremely eclectic, encompassing Brazilian, African, Asian music, jazz, etc.

Mehmet gives us the lowdown on Drom’s musical agenda and some alluring upcoming shows, including an annual Gypsy / Romany music festival in late September and Early October. A number of excellent European bands will make their NYC / US debuts at the festival (including Mahala Rai Banda, Baba Zula and Watcha Clan) sharing bills with leading lights of the local Balkan / E. European scene.
