Playlist for This Is The Modern World with Trouble - June 12, 2008

Tuesdays 9am - Noon on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Loretta Lynn carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

mornin my dears

Thu. 6/12/08 9:03am Bad Ronald:

Good Morning Trouble. Glad to see you've got the comments back.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:10am Dickdong:

"up the rabbit hole"? Surely it's 'down the rabbit hole' - unless you're in the rabbit hole and up on your way out.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:18am dale:

Selda: gorgeous!

Thu. 6/12/08 9:22am m:

glad to see you aren't going anywhere this summer trouble!

Thu. 6/12/08 9:23am Ted from Baltimore:

Trouble, you've got our household totally hooked on Flight of the Conchords! Everytime I hear a sweet soulful intro now I expect to hear Jermaine's sexy Kiwi crooning.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:30am sugarwolf:

I think you mean "sixy" crooning, Ted.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:34am jonathan:

i've heard the 2nd brazilian girls cd. no good. my pardner anna feels as you do about them.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:40am trouble:

i had heard that too, but i still should have sought it out to give a listen...

Thu. 6/12/08 9:43am Ian:

Which Gavin Bryars track was that?

Thu. 6/12/08 9:43am Dale:

I have the Best of the Shangrilas and when this came on i was blown away....as gothic as you can get, especially for the period.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:49am trouble:

sorry ian, apparently one week away and i forget it all. i edited in the gavin bryars cut into the playlist now..

Thu. 6/12/08 9:50am Tempy:

i'll never learn... so beautiful. awesome playlist in general.

Thu. 6/12/08 9:53am Bad Ronald:

Diggin Desmond Dekker

Thu. 6/12/08 9:59am m:

20 albums in and i'm still not sure how i feel about sparks...but always waiting for the one to push me over the edge

Thu. 6/12/08 10:00am Hugo Winterhalter:

I remember Julie London's seductive pose; her sultriness matching the amber in her eyes reflected from the tall bottle of bourbon which no one could refuse.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:00am dale:

Is this the Canadian band Selector with the song "celebrate the Bullet?"

Thu. 6/12/08 10:00am Agostinho:

2 tones bands are great.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:01am Ian:

Thanks Trouble!

Thu. 6/12/08 10:09am Agostinho:

Like Leonard Cohen+Can+world music

Thu. 6/12/08 10:10am Webhamster Henry:

Thu. 6/12/08 10:16am Cecile:

Trouble - if you could find it in your heart to play Raasaan Roland Kirk's version of "What's Going On" I would be very greateful!

Thu. 6/12/08 10:16am north guinea hills:

i dig-dug the radio i-ching, i feel roland kirk's soul in that firey back porch miasma... yummy stuff!

Thu. 6/12/08 10:18am Dale:

Also a big event at Rhinebeck fairgrounds this weekend .. antique farm equipment and antique motorcylce show/flea market. Go to woodstock then shoot across 209 to Rhinebeck to do both.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:19am jonathan:

still wondering about sparks. i'm old, but there's something there.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:21am Bad Ronald:

It's their sense of humor that I like.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:23am Jeffersonic:

Santogold reminds me of Siouxsie in that last song, especially in the chorus.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:25am Cecile:

does Sparks have a huge following on the East Coast, because it seems like only me, Mick from the Dirtbombs, and 4 other people out here in the Midwest like them.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:25am Bad Ronald:

For some reason the west coast is a breeding ground for bands that have a killer sense of humor: Surf Punks, The Tubes, The Dickies and Sparks.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:32am Cecile:

I thought Wisconsin's own Killdozer, Frogs and Couch Flambeau were pretty hilarious, but then again, I'm from the snowy North originally.

No, but really, where is the Sparks love in Minneapolis?

Thu. 6/12/08 10:32am Ted from Baltimore:

I had not heard of Sparks until Rollercoaster was on TV a few months ago, but my wife remembers a lot of her friends being into them way back in the day in Akron, OH

Thu. 6/12/08 10:33am jonathan:

bad ronald.
hello. i agree. sparks and the tubes. perfect comparison.
have you ever heard outside looking inside? fee waybill is fucking insane.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:35am Cecile:

Oh, I stand corrected. Ohio loves stuff like that.

I loved that Jello Biafra called odd Australian group Skyhooks, "the Australian Sparks"

Thu. 6/12/08 10:36am Laurie:

I always assumed ironic facial hair on young men was a tribute to Sparks.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:36am Bad Ronald:

Thu. 6/12/08 10:38am Harvey:

I'm always looking for Trouble

Thu. 6/12/08 10:38am jonathan:

Thu. 6/12/08 10:39am Bad Ronald:

OOPs now I got it, I don't have all their stuff...

Thu. 6/12/08 10:41am jonathan:

it's not good. but it is. just like sparks.

Thu. 6/12/08 10:43am Bad Ronald:

OK cool thanks again!

Thu. 6/12/08 10:44am G.:

Thu. 6/12/08 10:46am Bad Ronald:

Thu. 6/12/08 11:26am Listener Dave from NH:

I want to go to the show, but I'm kind of out of luck because I can't really pop into midtown to pick up the tickets beforehand.
I been zapped!

Thu. 6/12/08 11:27am max:

Does the "log on" require a password, or does one just try to hit the rivertoriver webpage?

Can you please post the url to the French pop blog? thanks!

Thu. 6/12/08 11:39am Listener Dave from NH:

Squarepusher's mix on the East Flatbush Project remix CD is worth the price of admission.
Not that it's even remotely radio-friendly.

Thu. 6/12/08 11:40am trouble:

http://fillessourires.blogspot.com/ is the blog by the filles fragiles guy.

Thu. 6/12/08 12:00pm j from bklyn:

river to river already crashed

Mon. 6/16/08 12:02pm Barry:

Trouble,
Share your sentiments about Bo Diddley. Believe it or don't, I saw him at a Ramada Inn, Travel Lodge whatever, at some obscure truck stop exit on I-5. One of the all time weirdest gigs I've ever been to. Bo Diddley and a billion truckers and traveling salesmen. Not only was the woman I was with the prettiest girl in the place, she was one of 7 total present (4 were waitresses). They were totally unprepared for the crowd - had no idea who he was. It took a half-hour to get a drink. Two drink minimum no one ever came back to take the second order. He must have run out of money - needed that extra gig to make it to Portland, I guess.
