Playlist for John Allen - June 11, 2008

Wednesdays 6am - 9am (Web-only) on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

"I listened yesterday. It's no reflection on you but I could'nt see where you were going or what you were going for. This early seventies thing did'nt get noticed the first time and you talk about friends of like Dealney and Bonnie who had records out like we're supposed to remember who they are. Then you play this long winded free jazz stuff that really grates on my nerves. And that noise without a beat and sounds like someones being pinched. Then you play a reggae song, I think you called it Dub, to what, be cool? You seem to really fetishize the whole folk thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played that punk song though. I like Joe Belock a lot."

Doesn't that dude whose email you quote get freeform? Obviously not.

Mr Emailer, you are not supposed to hear only what you are totally comfortable with here. If you need that sometimes, or all the time, try WCBS FM, or whatever other genre station can swaddle you.

You are supposed to hear some new things here, and some of them you say fantastic right off. Other specific acts or genres played here you may not get immediately, but let that go for now and see what happens if you hear them a few more times.

Some of the music I get and like the very most I was disappointed by or didn't "get" the first time -- maybe the first however many times -- I heard it, till at some point something clicked and I had access to it forever after.

Try being openminded (but not mushyheaded), dude -- you might gain something. Just a thought. :-)

Been great hearing your show Wednesday nights; thanks for all the cool stuff. Oh, and a friend of mine who owns a record/rock art store has a huge Delaney and Bonnie and Friends poster in his window now. Who is that Clapton dude anyway?

Wed. 6/11/08 9:05pm C:

Just out of curiosity, what show was that emailer referring to?

Wed. 6/11/08 9:07pm Mark:

Wed. 6/11/08 10:55pm Formerly Disgruntled:

hey John Allen - I have been feeling bad ever since you posted my age-old cisgruntled Email I sent you. You have it permanently at the top of your playlist. Anyway when I wrote that I was having a bad week - my girflfriend left to go back to Chicago, my dog had to be put down the same week, and I was in severe pain after major dental surgery. So then I heard your show and it made me feel more pain. Long story short _ am sorry for complaining. But based on toniight's show (first time I have tuned in since) it seems you did heed my words. You are playing music we can all relate to - none of the intellectual stuff - RIght on!

Fri. 6/13/08 8:23pm Ike:

I don't buy the above comment. Also, you were playing smooth jazz at around 9:22. Or it sounded like smooth jazz to me. Hmm. You seem to really fetishize the whole smooth jazz thing too which is obnoxious to us who don't even care. I liked it when you played Cheap Trick though. I like Joe Belock a lot.

No, wait. I'm getting Joe Belock confused with Bryce. I like Bryce a lot.
