Guests: Merita Halili & Raif Hyseni + spotlight on NYC’s wonderful community arts outreach and presenting organization the Center for Traditional Music and Dance (CTMD).
CTMD celebrates its fortieth anniversary with a benefit dance party at the high-styling Hiro Ballroom, 371 W. 16th St. in Manhattan on Thursday, June 5th. Featured artists for that event are David Oquendo and Havana 3 + Merita Halili and the Raif Hyseni Orchestra + DJ Rekha. For our WFMU / TSP preview, we’ll be joined Merita Halili and Raif Hyseni who will perform four songs as a duo, plus CTMD directors Ethel Raim and Pete Rushefsky.
Merita Halili, from Tirana by way of New Jersey, is a very popular singer among her fellow Albanians at home and abroad. Merita performs with the Raif Hyseni Orchestra, led by her talented accordion-playing husband who is originally from Kosovo (they met in the US after both won a visa lottery).
The Center for Traditional Music and Dance is a non-profit organization dedicated to building cross-cultural awareness by nurturing and preserving the performing arts traditions of New York City’s immigrant and ethnic communities.
