Playlist for The Evan "Funk" Davies Show - May 26, 2008

Tuesdays 11pm - 2am on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Starting with the 70s -- it could be a classic (or obscure) punk rocker, a forgotten disco diva, a long-unheard hit record, or none of these. What happens next depends on what's in the WFMU new bin and whether I remember my records from home. Tune in and find out! You'll even hear a live band once in a while.

Listener comments!

Mon. 5/26/08 11:09pm From: Laurie

I've been mispronouncing "badminton" my entire life. Oh dear, I thought the sport was called badmitten! How embarrassing.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:11pm From: Sybil

Spooky tooth, wow.

Oh, the Red Sox are ahead 1-0 after 5 innings. (Papi HR)

Mon. 5/26/08 11:12pm From: Wendy du Fromage

It is pronounced "badmitten" if, like me, you are from NJ.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:14pm From: Sybil

We always said "badmitten" too. NOT from NJ. I think that's pretty common. (Note play on words. ;-))

Mon. 5/26/08 11:17pm From: efd

i bet there are ppl from NJ who pronounce it "badmi-- en."
thanks for the Sox update, Sybil!

Mon. 5/26/08 11:23pm From: Wendy du Fromage

efd, you are absolutely right about the pronunciation. I was in VT too long and almost lost my NJ accent. For shame!

Mon. 5/26/08 11:25pm From: bfc

Its also known as Shuttles and Cocks.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:25pm From: Laurie

I'm from Miami, and we totes pronounce it "badmitten."

Mon. 5/26/08 11:29pm From: Sybil

Oh, no. Now 1-1.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:29pm From: bfc

Isn't G-Wright from Cresskill, NJ?

Mon. 5/26/08 11:30pm From: john

the badmi---en pronunciation is also what you'd hear just north of here in Central Conne--icu--. Yeesh.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:34pm From: efd

bfc, is he? I hadn't heard that before.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:34pm From: bfc

I'm pretty sure he is.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:36pm From: Amanda

Heh! If I remember correctly, I entered my pledge when you were giving away a Long Blondes CD. Didn't win the drawing, but I'm glad I get "Badminton" anyway. (To continue the thread that will have us discussing the same song for this entire show.)

The title of that Upper Crust album makes me laugh.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:37pm From: bfc

Well, at least he was born there, according to Rolling Stn R&R Encyclopedia.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:38pm From: efd

that's good enough for me!
Jersey Pride!

Mon. 5/26/08 11:41pm From: cissy davis/toni d.

hiya efd---how was your weekend??? i wanna hear more LONG BLONDES i think they're a groooovy group!!!!!!!! LUV YA EVAN!!!!!!!=)=)=)

Mon. 5/26/08 11:45pm From: efd

cissy davis? that's a new one.

Mon. 5/26/08 11:59pm From: Sybil

2-1 Sox, Lugo scores on a double by Pedroia.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:01am From: Sybil

Intentional walk to Papi [!] then Manny drives in another run. 3-1.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:01am From: Pete

EFJ

Thanks for playing a song from the Dimona comp. Glad you like it. Right now, for me, its a tie between the Ardent Records comp and this one for 2008

Now you have to play the Ting Tings next!

Pete

Tue. 5/27/08 12:01am From: efd

nice!
who's pitching for the Sox, Daisuke? I lost track of the rotation over the weekend

Tue. 5/27/08 12:03am From: Sybil

Colon is pitching, or was anyway. Doing a pretty good job.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:04am From: Sybil

Lowell drives in another run.

This is fun.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:06am From: efd

Pete, if the TIng Tings CD were in the new bin I'd play it!

hmm, maybe that's why it's not in the new bin.

Sybil, the one good thing about not doing my show last week was that I got to see the last few innings of Lester's no-hitter!

Tue. 5/27/08 12:09am From: Sybil

Tek just drew a walk with the bases loaded, so there goes another run. Now 5-1, and all this scoring has happened with 2 outs (and Lugo started it!!!)

I'm glad you got to see some of that no-hitter, efd. It was awesome.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:30am From: E.L.

What's this xyx? I feel like somebody got on Bonde Do Role's bad side. I like it.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:34am From: E.L.

Thanks, big guy.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:40am From: E.L.

EFD, please open your next show with: "And a happy how d'you do to you." —if I'm quoting that correctly.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:40am From: Sybil

Papelbon's struggling. Now 5-2.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:41am From: Sybil

Make that 5-3.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:43am From: Amanda

I am with E.L. on the opening. But I also advocate for plenty of pro-army propaganda.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:43am From: Sybil

That's it. Red Sox win, 5-3.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:45am From: efd

phew!

Amanda/E.L., I'll try to remember that!

Tue. 5/27/08 12:45am From: Sybil

The "in" sound, hmmmmm?

I third the suggestion for opening!

Tue. 5/27/08 12:45am From: Droll

Holy crap! Now *THAT* is a DJ! Get right up on the mic, cup your ear, read a PSA with an uplift, play a hit, don't talk over the song, back announce, play a cart interviewing the artist, reiterate the sponsor quote with gusto... That guy's pro.
Not that you're a slouch, EFD -- fine show.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:46am From: Laurie

Ha! I love this song title.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:46am From: efd

i bet Harry Harrison wouldn't have forgotten his April Wine CD like i did...

Tue. 5/27/08 12:49am From: efd

who here saw "Mr Lonely?"

Tue. 5/27/08 12:52am From: Droll

I don't think Harry has the "skillz" to play the Beatles/Stones/Wine mashup which is that song.
Incidentally, I always thought mechanical reverb on the DJ's voice made him sound lonely and isolated. That always creeped me out when DJ's did that back in the day.

Tue. 5/27/08 12:52am From: Sybil

Honestly, every time you say you're going to play Harry Harrison I think of the Stainless Steel Rat.

Didn't see "Mr. Lonely," in fact. But it looks interesting.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:00am From: Amanda

They were missing the Lords of Brooklyn bed music, I guess, those lonely old-days DJs.

My Steve Perry fan fiction ALWAYS gets approved. I don't know 'bout you guys.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:01am From: efd

Sybil, I guess "Harry Harrison fan fiction" would have you even more confused...

Tue. 5/27/08 1:06am From: skunkhammer

Isn't Steve Perry the lead singer for Rush, or was that ozzy ozborn?

Tue. 5/27/08 1:15am From: matt

my favorite abba song is 'rock n roll band' which was the b side to 'ring ring'. it predates the 'abba' name.
great show. listening from japan.
matt

Tue. 5/27/08 1:17am From: efd

thanks Matt! I'll have to look for that Abba song, I don't know it.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:17am From: otto

no, I think Steve Perry was the lead for motorhead

Tue. 5/27/08 1:28am From: Droll

"Steve Perry" is anagram for "Pervert? Yes!". I think that explains who was in which band.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:35am From: otto

It's all clear to me now

Tue. 5/27/08 1:36am From: Randy in NC

joining late, my daughter went to "I dunno, some website" that downloaded a trojan horse onto my computer. It took me 4 hours to figure out how to get it off... Looks like it's been a good show here as usual

Tue. 5/27/08 1:38am From: efd

yikes, glad you could make it Randy!

Tue. 5/27/08 1:40am From: Randy in NC

I saw Mrs Mitch Easter's band last weekend and didn't realize who it was, Mitch Easter on gtr and Don Dixon on bass. They sounded great of course.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:41am From: skunkhammer

The anti Beasty boys God has spoken

Tue. 5/27/08 1:46am From: Randy in NC

Was it the Beastie Boys who did "Cookie Puss", a heavy rotation hit on FMU many years ago?

Tue. 5/27/08 1:52am From: efd

yep, that was them.

cool story about seeing Shalini!

Tue. 5/27/08 1:53am From: Randy in NC

They were playing for free in a park in Raleigh

Tue. 5/27/08 1:57am From: Amanda

"Cookie O'Puss, then... or Cookie Chick... anybody, I wanna speak to them!"

I had shelved that CD, "Some Old Bullshit," for years after listening to it way too much, but I actually just began listening to it again last week. Funny you should mention, Randy.

Tue. 5/27/08 1:59am From: Randy in NC

It's so goofy... Perfect FMU material...

Tue. 5/27/08 2:00am From: Randy in NC

efd, don't forget to turn the reverb off

Tue. 5/27/08 2:02am From: Sybil

See you in 2 weeks minus 3 hours!

Tue. 5/27/08 2:02am From: Amanda

It's going to stay on aaaaaall night...

Tue. 5/27/08 2:07am From: efd
