RON PAUL 2008.
Fri. 1/4/08 9:35am
Chance From That Third World Country, Maine:
Paul has to move up to at least third in NH to stay in contention, IMO. Sadly, I don't think he will.
Fri. 1/4/08 9:37am
Garret:

Doug:
Out of left field question, is Gumnaam the film shown in the opening scene of Ghost World?
Fri. 1/4/08 10:13am
Franz Mesmer:
Loved the Fats Waller and Edna Hicks earlier today. Death to Ron Paul!
Fri. 1/4/08 10:14am
Listener Dave from NH:
Poor Ron Paul. He just wants to get rid of the UN and bring back the gold standard. Is that so crazy?
(yes)
Fri. 1/4/08 10:16am
seanh:
Imagine Ron Paulers, with the help of that Florida blimp, your candidate might reach 11%!
Obama is going to sweep NH/SC, and eventually super tuesday. Clinton's entitlement was just deflated. Things are good.
Fri. 1/4/08 10:17am
Doug:
Vivian, yes yes yes! The Bollywood film clip shown at the beginning of Ghost World is the tune Jan Pehechan Ho from Gumnaam.
Fri. 1/4/08 10:18am
Chance From That Third World Country, Maine:
After last night, I will give Obama consideration again, but I still am leaning towards Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Everybody mambo!
Fri. 1/4/08 10:18am

also, awesome show this morning :). The snake charmers tracks was absolutely stunning. Can't say the latin-lounge is my thing, but I'll stand by for something more my style.

Obama's polished one-liners make me sick. Come to think of it, everyone makes me sick. The presidency should go to the person who wants it least.

Paul Sherratt:
We're not exactly up-to-speed over here in the UK ... so Kinky Friedman isn't a candidate ?
Fri. 1/4/08 10:24am
Cecile:
That would be me. But I decline. ;)

RON PAUL IS THE BEST CHOICE...unless you would like to
continue moving closer and closer towards communism.
PEACE
Fri. 1/4/08 10:27am
Matt:
I'd like to see El Cantante, but the idea of Mark Anthony as Hector Lavoe is kind of scary.....like the idea of Ron Paul as president.....
Fri. 1/4/08 10:28am
Cecile:
I didn't spend $10 on El Cantante knowing I could Netflix it for "free." But, but all means run don't walk out and scoop up some Hector Lavoe records. Brilliant, swinging and, of course, heartbreaking.
Fri. 1/4/08 10:30am
Matt:
Yes, I love Hector Lavoe- yet another musical treasure that Doug turned me on to.
Fri. 1/4/08 10:30am
Cecile:
Could you play some today, Doug?

GO RON PAUL

Cecile, I didn't bring any Hector with me today (and my set's about to end). Use the WFMU website to search one of my shows with Hector's "Periodico de Ayer" then listen to the archive. Stunning tune.

As Ron Paul supporter, there are two things that concern me about Ron Paul.
1) His stance on abortion. I agree with him that it's not a federal issue, but I disagree with his pro-life stance. Abortion is not a huge issue to me, but then I'm a guy.
http://www.issues2000.org/TX/Ron_Paul.htm
2) His skepticism on evolution. I agree with him that it's a theory, but its a theory that has more evidence than creationism (intelligent design, etc.).

Thanks for the Shibusashirazu. Of course, the records do not capture the visual excitement of seeing them live. Very spectacular. Saw them here back in 2K.

Doug, who knew your listeners got so fired up by electoral polictics? Sorry, but I have no plans to put away my lapel button that says "Vote for the millionaire liar of your choice."

Bad Ronald:
Thanks Parq.
You're too kind.
Fri. 1/4/08 11:33am
Paul Sherratt:
Parq,
I've always wondered about Kinky, but am I'm right in thinking that he's no millionaire ?
Fri. 1/4/08 11:43am
Wes:
Parq, I had that button last election, it said "bones versus bones - take your pick" Kinky Friedman for Prez!! I doubt he's a millionare but he might be "in assets" kinda like Willie. His parents were rather wealthy but spent a good portion on charity.
Fri. 1/4/08 11:44am
Parq:
Paul, my point exactly. It would be like if Wreckless Eric stood for PM. (Actually, I met W.E. while volunteering in the phone room a couple of years back, and there's plently he'll stand for.)
Fri. 1/4/08 11:44am
Hugo from Bergen:
Ron Paul? A Texas Republican who supposedly wants to abolish the IRS and the Federal Reserve? So why is he running for the top job in the federation, I wonder?
Fri. 1/4/08 11:47am
Trish:
whistley-flute-tastic!
Fri. 1/4/08 11:49am
Cecile:
? and the Mysterians are teh awesome
Fri. 1/4/08 11:50am
Bad Ronald:
I'd vote for Wreckless Eric!
Fri. 1/4/08 11:51am
Doug:
Actually, that was the group Question Mark from Kenya!
Fri. 1/4/08 11:52am
pat:
Ron Paul picked his planks out of a hat--one of his top issues "Home Schooling". What the f--? The guys a typical libertarian no-nothing. Hmm, Doug's been mysteriously quiet on the issue of electoral politics...
Fri. 1/4/08 11:54am
Little Lumper:
Give the Drummer Some is the best radio music show in the known universe!
Fri. 1/4/08 11:54am
Cecile:
Oh, geez...
they sounded pretty mysterian...
Fri. 1/4/08 11:58am
Paul Sherratt:
Parq,
Wreckless would make a fine UK ambassador, say to France ... we could save on costs too as I think he already lives there.
Now Kinky Friedman & Willie Nelson, that's the ticket !
Fri. 1/4/08 12:01pm
Dj LUKE:
horray for one world government
horray for our collapsing currency
horray for welfare
horray for war
horray for the patriot act
horray for total government control
please
Fri. 1/4/08 12:04pm
Hugo from Bergen:
Kinky appears to be endorsing Ron Paul (been peeking at the official RP site).
And NOW: Frank Wright on the Bryce show!
Fri. 1/4/08 4:18pm
mike njtp:
doug great flowing show. loved the big sur vacation tale. ihavent been in that neck of the woods since 1971. lots of faded memories. sounds like heaven and your maine vacation spot sounds cool too. 2008 here we are! enjoy.

2007 was a helluva year for my communing with frigid oceans: the Atlantic off Northern Maine in July and the Pacific at Big Sur in December. Bracing!

Doug, does Charlie Palmieri play on "Que no Muera"? On my copy of the Montuno Sessions the song is listed as by Angelo Vaillant.
Sat. 1/5/08 8:19pm
Doug:
M,
You ask a good question. I downloaded the music from a site that had scant info. Pamieri is the most prominent name on the booklet cover and piano is prominent on the tune, so I surmised that Palmieri was present. I just found a page online (http://www.stereophile.com/records2die4/754/index1.html) that breaks down the track listings and personnel a bit more (confirming that Angela Vaillant is the vocalist on "Que no Muera"), but his vocal is the only credit given for that track. Whoops: Now I've found another page online (http://www.ericb.nl/salsa_descargas.htm) that claims the track is by Vaillant with vocals by Mongo Santamaria! Anyone else with additional info, please set me straight.
