Playlist for Anti Static with Mike Lupica - October 31, 2007

WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

This program features three tracks each week, culled from the endless barrage of independent 45s that were released throughout the 1990s. A shameless re-visitation of those halcyon days when mailorder and photocopied fanzines ruled the school.

Funny story, I bought my first Volcano Suns album in 1994 at a record store on Newberry Street in Boston. When I went up to pay the guy at the register started laughing. I figured he was ripping on my musical taste and was about to start getting belligerent. Then he called to another guy shelving records and said "Hey, look what this guys buying!" The guy came over and looked, grunted and went back to shelving. I looked confused. The guy at the register nodded back at his coworker and said to me "He's the bass player for the Suns". I wanted to shoot the shit with him, about MOB and some friends we probably had in common, but he didn't have a word to say to me. The other guy kept laughing and he kept getting moodier and moodier, so I left. Hey a week later though, I found a copy of "This is Boston not LA" in the same store! So I got that going for me...

The first Volcano Suns record I bought was "Bumper Crop", and it was purchased entirely on the strength of the review it received in the Trenton-based publication known as "This Zine Sucks".
