Not the same house that Coltrane built?

"The Wolf That House Built" is a pretty cool name for an album, actually, even if it does call to mind that stupid doctor show the wife and kid like to watch.

Good morning Doug. Fine example of a radio program if I ever heard one, as usual. I drank too much rum lastnight, but it looks like it's going to be an alright Friday after all....
|
Fri. 10/12/07 10:07am
Doug:
Wes, what is this "too much rum" you speak of exactly?
|

Haha...come to think of it....

A new Mary Gauthier, that is an event! You should get her on the show, if possible. I've seen her twice here in Bergen.

Just got in from work with pup dog Jim and was wondering if the Drummer Some proprietor had got hold of the new Jim White offering and there it was - spinning already ! I'll be at the Manchester Night & Day gig ..

Brian Sanders:
Going to see the lovely!! Mary on Sunday in London. To quote Ken Kesey's title she never gives a inch. Jim White's London gig has sold out. How come so many of your great perfomers are more popular here in Europe. Discuss!
|
Fri. 10/12/07 10:46am
Cecile:
Because we can be kinda stupid. Then again 80s British band The Outfield was more popular over there than there. What does that say?!?!?!
|
Fri. 10/12/07 10:47am
Cecile:
I meant to say here. | |

Loving the coltrane segments up here in New Hampshire. I always forget the wonderful connections of all the great jazz from that era. So much great music and you can really sit and listen to changes that each musician was going through. So thanks for taking the time and playing them. Will go back and listen to last weeks since I missed it.

Tim NH:
Weird - I'm in New Hampshire too. I can't imagine there are a ton of FMU New Hampshire listeners, but you never know. The documentary is amazing - listening to Coltrane is a constant rediscovery.
|
Fri. 10/12/07 11:36am
Doug:
Dave, I wish it were possible for you to go back and here Part 1, but this Coltrane documentary is not being archived. The producer of the program felt he did not have permission from the Coltrane estate to allow it to be made available in a form that could be easily downloadable. Trust me, we are hoping that at some point that permission will be given. If that ever happens, I will rebroadcast the whole thing in order for it to be archived.

Listener Dave from NH:
I'm (yet another) Dave from N'Hampsha and I'm also loving the documentary. I never did get too much into jazz, but I had to pick my jaw up off the floor the first time I heard Coltrane's "Stellar Regions." This is educational and reverent to the man and manages to avoid whiffs of hagiography, all the more impressive because so many of his peers put him up on such a lofty pedestal.

Yo Doug! who is this playing now? ornette and don cherry? Thanks again for the Trane doc...beautiful.
|
Fri. 10/12/07 12:09pm
raissa:
thanks doug! inspirational on many fronts. who was it that said Coltrane hardly talked in rehearsals. that he allowed the musicians to use their individual musical intelligence. and that he didn't even know what the pieces were called until the recordings came out.
|
Fri. 10/12/07 12:12pm
Doug:
Mike, this record is actually the first track of Bryce's show. The trumpet is Alan Shorter (Wayne's brother) and the tenor sax is Gato Barbieri. The album is Shorter's release "Orgasm" on Verve. A stunning record indeed. Welcome to Friday afternoons Bryce!!

hey doug sheets of sound trane getting propelled by elvin jones i waslucky to have seen him at the village vanguard in the early 70s fmu and your time slot are the best
|
Sat. 10/13/07 12:40am
Doug:
Mike, if you saw Trane and the Vanguard in the early 70's you indeed were lucky! (He died in '67.) I imagine you meant '60s and, yes I am envious. Impulse records (or whatever corporate monolith owns the Impulse catalog) released a four-CD box called the Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Sessions, which is gets any of us who weren't as lucky as you just about as close as possible to experiencing the Trane Quartet at that famed venue back then.
