Emma Reid and Alicia Bjornsdotter Abrams both studied Swedish traditional
fiddling at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. They also share an
interest in the UK's Shetland Isles fiddle tradition. On this show - and a
new cd, Rough and Shiny - they perform in the unusual and compelling fiddle
duo format. As Emma writes on her website:
"The Swedish term for two fiddles played an octave apart is 'rough and
shiny'. The high, shiny melody gets depth and colour from the low, rough
octave. For at least 100 years Swedish fiddlers have used this arrangement
technique to effectively combine the forces of two fiddles."
Among their many other musical undertakings, Emma and Alicia also play
together in a band called Ditt Ditt Darium.
