Playlist for Irene Trudel - September 18, 2006

Mondays 3pm - 5pm on WFMU 91.1 fm 90.1 fm wfmu.org

Music floating on calmer seas is "netted" by my ears and released to the hungry listeners. It's a stringy catch, but frequently live and always delectable.

Live performance by Jacob Olaussen w/ Suzanne Skov Gronlund

Jakob Olausson is a craftsman of beautiful tunes that touch on lazy cosmic excursions. He's been described this way, "If Skip Spence were somehow, instead of finding his white-frocked self stuck in the rat-infested hole that was Bellvue, transplanted to the pine forests north of Malmo, Sweden, in a sonic nest of gimbri, bells, shakers and clothed in Tibetan silk, one would come slightly closer to the reality of Jakob Olausson's migratory musical whims. To be sure, that foggy and only slightly inland empire of synapse-twisters like Ben Chasny offers a step on the trodden trail, but this isn't the same road we've traveled before. Olausson's huge ears protect him from the cold and keep the sun from turning his face to a series of desert crags, as his compositions slowly fade down the walls of four-track bedroom artistry into atemporal suites that shrink huge expanses and are a bellows to the microcosmic." Jakob visited from Sweden to play live on WFMU.

Live performance by My Brightest Diamond

My Brightest Diamond is Shara Worden, granddaughter of an Epiphone-playing traveling evangelist, fathered by a National Accordion Champion, and mothered by a church organist. Spanish tangos, Sunday morning gospel, classical and jazz were the accompaniment to her home life. The music of My Brightest Diamond has an air of theatricality about it but is deeply personal and pretty, with a hint of the spirit of Jeff Buckley behind it. Also in the ensemble are guitarist Sebastian Kreuger, violist Marla Hansen, violin player Rob Moose and bassist Nathan Lithgow.
