Kyrgyz Musicians

Hear this show now: RealAudio

Musicians from Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia plus a cultural anthropologist

from Philly stop by for interview and a bit of demonstration / performance.

The younger of the two musicians, Akylbek Kasabolotov is a master musician

renowned for his skill with traditional wind instruments of Central Asia. He

also plays with the Kyrgyz traditional group Tengir Too, who have a cd recently

released by Smithsonian Folkways.  He demonstrates various instruments and plays

a few short solo songs.  And he talks about keeping the tradition alive for the

younger generation.

Ryspai Isakov is a brilliant epic singer who performs the Kyrgyz national epic

Manas, the longest epic in the world at over half a million lines. (He won't be

performing on this show though - only Kasabolotov performs.)

Philadelphia-based anthropologist Helen Faller brought the artists to the US.  She acts as interpreter and helps to provide background.  (Her homepage http://www.mosaiqa.com is currently under construction.)

The following web page (scroll down when you get there) has some additional artist / music info:

http://www.harrimaninstitute.org/events/lecture_series.html?id=central_asia.
The Tengir Too homepage (http://www.viakaboul.com/artist_page.php?artist_id=6) also has images and descriptions of Kyrgyz instruments.

Special thanks to WFMU alum Matthew Ostrowski.
